Air Serbia - Air China begin codesahare flights

Air Serbia has announced the implementation of a codeshare agreement with Air China. The terms of the codeshare were set forth during the recent visit of Air Serbia's top management team to Beijing, where they held meetings with senior officials at key companies and institutions in China's travel industry, including Air China, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) and China International Travel Service. The implementation of the agreement comes after the approval of Air Serbia's safety audit, as required by the CAAC. Under the agreement, effective today, a codeshare will be established between the Serbian and Chinese capitals, whereby Air Serbia will place its "JU" designator code and flight number on the Beijing - Vienna route operated by Air China, while Air China will place its marketing code on Air Serbia’s service between Belgrade and Vienna. Dane Kondić, Air Serbia’s CEO, said, "Codeshares are a fundamental pillar of our strategy to offer our guests greater flexibility and choice to key distant destinations, while our comprehensive commercial partnership with Air China is a crucial step in enhancing our presence in China and the Far East. We are now able to enhance our business and leisure travel offering between Serbia and China, and onwards to strategically important destinations throughout Asia and Europe”. He adds, "We are equally confident that the cooperation between our two airlines will not only further contribute to the traditionally friendly relations and the exciting momentum of growth in economic ties between Serbia and China, but also has a significant role to play in facilitating the attraction of Chinese investment to countries within our network, a strategic priority for our wider region”.

    Via Vienna, why not Budapest? Vienna has better connectivity but Air Serbia really needs a boost on Budapest route. This may mean BEG-BUD will be shut down after this summer.

    Shanghai also deserves a codeshare...

      having flown to budapest with 8 other passengers i cannot see this line surviving for long, so probably why via vienna, they will close budapest probably

      I wanted to buy beg-bud return ticket this May and it was 190 EUR! Belavia is cheaper. No wonder they are doing badly.

      BUD is for sure getting shut after hearing this news! That is the only route that wont be missed since the route is really not necessary plus the loads were really bad.

    Does China-Serbia bilateral allow for potential Air Serbia flights to China in the future? If this codeshare is successful, direct flights could be logical next step.

    One major downside to this agreement is that you cannot earn Etihad Guest miles for the VIE-PEK segment. That makes the already existent BEG-AUH-PEK route much more attractive, despite the desert stop. Consequently, I don't know if Air Serbia will be able to properly assess the value of the codeshare and the potential for direct flights.

      Demand exists, with or without FF info. I think that JU does not have a codeshare with EY on AUH-PEK, and it's a long route, much longer than via SVO for example. AUH is not the right way, and it's not how China wants Europe passengers to travel to China. It's possible that China was offered to start flights to Belgrade and they refused (for now?), therefore they agreed to this risk-free codeshare via Star Alliance hub. But the long term solution is nonstop. If China does not soon allocate one airline (they prefer one airline per city pair) for Belgrade, Air Serbia could start thinking about PVG, PEK (that China prefers), or both.

      Negotiations have two sides, don't they? For me as a complete outsider it's hard to imagine all Serbia wanted is codeshare through Vienna, they most likely had a lot more on the table, possibly even direct, but obviously China (who else?) turned it down. They are very peculiar in airline matters and protective of their interests (and good for them), so it takes patience and time to build relationships and trust. Please note that last year's agreement includes codeshare to both PEK and PVG, so there is room for the next step if PEK codeshare works out.

    Negotiations have two ways but here it looks as if they only had one way. Air Serbia is pretty much feeding Air China's flights, with a flight certinaly not capable to showcase the best of Air Serbia's product. Feeding to Budapest would be even more humiliating but it ain't happening since the frequencies are weak and the route is going to be cut anyway which is another failure for Air Serbia. I hardly see someone booking TGD-BEG-VIE-PEK either with all the other options available. Direct flights are the only way to go and i'm not sure this route will even be able to demonstrate their full potential. As for Budapest, the route is failing only due to poor planning and pricing, what nobody seems interested to look deeper into, they may also cancel a few more routes down that path.

      My guess is that China had an upper hand in negotiations because Air Serbia doesn't have long haul aircraft. When ASL A330 arrives China will still have an upper hand in determining destination, and my guess is they will force ASL to go to PEK first even though PVG has more O&D from BEG.

      I guess your guess is right ;) It is enough to present yourself at any SU or TK check-in in Belgrade to realize that half of the passengers are sometimes headed to China.

    I fail to see why anyone would choose to fly with JU/CA from BEG to PEK? I just looked at the price and the schedule, and it makes absolutely no sense. Long layovers, and a very expensive ticket (EUR 1043). I guess they are relying on Government/state owned companies to use the route, as JU has preferred status. Talking about protectionism.

    I did a random booking with OS for same dates, and got a price of EUR 815. The major difference? On the way to PEK, the layover with JU is 7 (?!) hours, with OS 1 hour. On the way back, layover with JU is 4 hours, with OS 2 hours.
