British Airways to downgrade Dubrovnik service

Wednesday, April 6, 2016

Local authorities in Dubrovnik have said that British Airways will no longer offer year-round flights to the city due to high costs. Mayor Andro Vlahušić thanked British Airways on its cooperation but said the carrier was asking for too much in order for it to maintain its flights from London Gatwick throughout the year. Mr Vlahušić noted that local authorities would seek an alternative in order for Dubrovnik to stay linked to the British capital throughout the year. Recently, Turkish Airlines confirmed it would run its new service from Istanbul to Dubrovnik on a year-round basis, while Croatia Airlines plans to operate flights to Frankfurt during the winter months as well. Dubrovnik Airport is on a mission to ease its dependence on peak summer traffic and stimulate travel during the winter months as well.

Problem with Dubrovnik is, that it is just too small, with a population of only 50 000 they can't expect major air traffic happening year round, Dubrovnik is dead in winters, there's little activity during Xmas period however between October 31st and March 1st there's no traffic or visitors to Dubrovnik, a ghost town. Even October and March are semi dull, with barely few visitors, mostly day trippers (large boats and cruise ships).

Dubrovnik will grow in summers might do well even in October and March in few years time, however as is things won't improve much, there's little interest for the city. pulling out is just tip of the iceberg,
Turkish will also find this, however they're state airline and don't work on a commercial basis.

I think DBV should at least have BA flights from 01MAR to 31OCT and maybe the 10 days around Xmas

BA is operating to LGW with almost none intercontinental transfer pax. BA is not willing to give a slot for DBV ex LHR, so I understand that DBV is not willing to pay more

Plus I do not get why BA is not using Embraers in Winter which would make it more viable then.
