Air Serbia to post 2016 profit

Air Serbia will post a profit for a third consecutive year, the Chairman of the company's Supervisory Board, Siniša Mali, has said, despite increased pressure on costs caused by the launch of transatlantic flights. Speaking in an interview broadcast on national television, Mr Mali said, "It is still unofficial since the financial results have not been released yet but we turned a profit last year in spite of flights to New York, which was the crowning moment of three years of hard work". Mr Mali did not specify the amount of profit the airline recorded in 2016. Air Serbia’s annual financial statements for the previous year, which are independently audited by KPMG in accordance with International Auditing Standards, are usually published between March and May.

Air Serbia posted a 3.9 million euro net profit in 2015. During 2016 the airline launched long haul flights to New York, which undoubtedly had an impact on its business. While the carrier has been encouraged by better than expected passenger demand and revenue from cargo on the route, it has been indicated that the service would likely generate losses during the first two years of operations. Last week, the carrier conceded that yields on the route have not performed as hoped for, due to less Americans travelling to Europe for fear of terror attacks. During 2016, the airline began paying for a number of services at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, which it had previously been exempt from under a takeover agreement between Etihad Airways and the Serbian government.

Mr Mali said that with the airline continuing to turn a profit, it is also establishing Belgrade Airport as a regional hub. "Air Serbia is the only national airline out of eleven countries in the region to operate nonstop flights to North America. As a result, Air Serbia, Belgrade Airport and the city of Belgrade benefit from this service. If we are able to finalise talks with China, we will have nonstop flights to one or two Chinese cities. Belgrade is becoming a hub in the aviation sector in this part of Europe", Mr Mali noted. During 2016, Air Serbia's passenger numbers rose to some 2.7 million. In a recent statement, the airline's part-owner, Etihad Airways, said, "Etihad is and remains fully committed to Air Serbia and to the strategic partnership with Air Serbia’s majority owner, the Government of Serbia. Since its relaunch, just over three years ago, Serbia’s national airline has been transformed into a profitable, sustainable, and best-in-class, airline”.

I think Air Serbia and Croatia Airlines should jointly hold courses to other companies on creative accounting.

Of course it's creative accounting when they are receiving subsidies from the government which they are not paying back but the government is.

Just like when a company receives a loan it shows as income while when it pays it back it's considered as an expensve.
JU gets the money but it is not paying it back.

True. LF was 65.5% which is up 5%. Passenger numbers were up almost 14%.

now it would be good to see bottom line results with all subsidies included and see how real is the profit.

There are no conspiracy theories here. There is a fact that JU is in deep crisis and in the red. It's employees are leaving the company on a daily basis. There is widespread depression among workers as a result of excessive mobing.

Just look how many high ranking employees quit in recent times.

It's all because of one man. Everyone knows that. Just like everyone knows that this profit is creative accounting.

JU is not in the red. They are in the black. Employees are freely associated with JU. No ne forces them into the company and they are free to leave when they want. Mobing is an offence dealt with under the law, so no one is immune from that.

Now, if you believe in the conspiracy theory that KPMG is some sort of an extension of GoS and does its bidding, then you need to catch a wake up, as it's pretty comical.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous10:05

Yeah because KPMG and others have not played with numbers in the past. You are kidding yourself. Just Google it and you will find more than enough examples of creative accounting.

As for mobing, you mean that the employees are supposed to have faith in the same courts that are refusing to make a ruling on the Chamber of Commerce tax case because they are afraid of the ruling party? Sure.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous10:08

it is not a conspiracy theory. it is just the matter of how good can you read the financial results. i know how to read them and i know what is the subsidy line and what would the result be without airport writeoffs (tens of mil€ loss).

second of all, KPMG was the auditor of the failed agrobank, and it didn't lose it's license then on account of its ties with GoS. also, the consulting market is ridiculous in serbia thanks to KPMG. on account of their connections they are getting every possible deal there is on the market, with PM even giving them a free advertisements, like in the case of failed smederevo steel mill tender.

      Delete
    9. Anonymous10:10

What about the millions the GoS is going to give to JU in 2017? Could it be that they are using this to cover their loses?

      Delete
    10. Anonymous10:14

nope, it is not possible under accounting standards. there were subsidies in 2016, but we have to see in which amount.

2017 budget subsidies will be used to cover the JU losses in 2017.

      Delete
    11. Anonymous10:20

You have already discredited yourself and your "knowledge to read the figures" by your first comment. It is not a subsidy. Subsidy is a direct payment from the budget to keep the price of a service low. BEG is offering discount, as per its publically available price list, for certain carriers that manage to handle a certain percentage of passengers per annum. JU falls in this category, and is eligible for such a discount, as would be any other carrier that meets the criteria.

As for KPMG, once I again I beg you to stop dabbling in conspiracy theories. This is not the forum for sensationalist agendas.

The budget for 2017 has special subsidies to companies which are considered of vital importance, JU being one of them.

So yes, JU does receive direct subsidies from the national budget.

If you don't believe me go and see it yourself. You can find the budget online

      Delete
    20. Anonymous12:06

Not quite anon 11:32. These budget items are not 'special subsidies' but the amounts of the government guarantees for loans these companies have taken.

Yes it is state aid (which no one denies) but no it is not a cash subsidy. And there is nothing 'creative' in the accounting and auditing of the financial statements of a state-owned entity that uses the state aid.

      Quoted for truth.

      Delete
    24. Anonymous13:54

Of course it is truth - and there is nothing bad or immoral in it. An airline business needs a lot of support to survive these days. That support by logic comes primarily from the owner - which in case of JU is Republic of Serbia. The state helps the business it owns, hoping it would eventually turn profitable and sustainable. It is a long-term effort as it's impossible to send a coma patient (Jat) to compete in the Olympics final within a 2-3 year time frame. Year after year, JU will need less and less of state aid and will eventually become self-sustainable. And the state investment will prove itself worthy. That is called positive thinking, as opposed to your (and not just your) hope that everything will fall apart, die, disappear, burn in fire.

Feel free to quote this too.

      Delete
    25. Anonymous13:54

Of course, because the government is the majority shareholder.
Like majority shareholders in Wizz support that company.
We saw with Turkish that a state-owned company can perform far better than private own European legacies. I know it breaks old conventional truths from the 1980s and the 1990s that the private ownership is always superior, but the conventions are there to be broken.
Serbia always lags behind the developed world about 20-30 years.

      Delete
    26. Anonymous14:26

Anon 1:54 Please note that Turkish plays the game under different rules. Turkey is not part of single aviation market, therefore no foreign carriers are allowed to enter Turkish domestic market. Plus, EU is not recognized as a single body, which means that European carriers can operate to Turkey based on bilateral agreements between Turkey and the AOC granted country. And bilateral agreements usually designate one carrier and allow one or two destinations to be operated. That leaves Turkish Airlines a huge playground without competition (not to mention that all governmental bodies discriminate TK positively).

Good news from ASL. This should not be surprising.
    1. They cut costs at the beginning of 2016 significantly and improved loads.
    2. They trimmed promotional prices substantially and increased prices, particularly on the routes where they have virtual monopoly and great loads, such as LHR, CDG, ZHR or AMS.
    3. They had an extra airplane from JP for three high-season summer months for which they paid nothing (old JP debt to JU).
    4. Thanks to JFK flights, they improved the loads on regional lines.
    5. Oil continued to be low.
    6. They avoided being too adventurous, by taking the second a330.

On the minus side, they started to pay airport costs, although at discounted rate, and had to invest a lot in JFK flights, but with better loads than expected during summer and only for little more than six months.

So I would say that the announcement of another profitable year makes sense.
It is hard to see it if you are blinded by prejudices that everything in Serbia is bad, bad, bad and that the low point of the 1990s is a default situation. It is also difficult to see it if you are blinded by party politics. JU is owned by the Republic of Serbia, not by politicians or by parties. It is stupid to destroy JU to prove a partisan point.

So are they going to become a hybrid low cost airline because of the great results under the current boutique model?

Anyone to give an estimate on 2016 savings JU made being abolished of paying any taxes on fuel?

Of course they paid the duties and taxes on fuel. No need to take every political activism on this blog seriously.

JU is exempt of paying excise tax on fuel.

But GSP Beograd is paying them, that is a shame.

    7. Anonymous23:11

JU is not exempt of fuel taxes. According to the agreement with Etihad, JU receives a 50% discount to the into-plane differential - something much different from excise taxes. But that is just another difference the hater brigade is not aware of, does not care about, and is simply too arrogant to learn.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous06:29

That's nine cents per liter, i.e. roughly over 10 million euro per year. Nice contribution of the Serbian taxpayers to JU.

    9. Anonymous08:53

Another one in the line of hidden discounts for Air Serbia not available to anyone else. Fantastic.

      Delete
    10. Anonymous09:02

The discount is not hidden, it is clearly stated in the agreement.

And it comes from Gazprom NIS which happens to be privately owned.

So you can both spare us your bitter conspiracy theories and fake concern over Serbian taxpayers.

      Delete
    11. Anonymous09:50

yupp and this privately owned company would forfeit profit just like that. nice deal JU. wondering if this also goes into oxford economics impact report?

btw, that private company is 56% russian government, 29% serbian government, with the rest of the shares in free float.

      Delete
    12. Anonymous10:59

GoS signed the agreement with Etihad. How is that related to Gazprom NIS? Is GoS able to act on behalf of a Russian majority company?

      Delete
    13. Anonymous11:20

if the government lowered the excise duty on jet fuel then there is a problem. if the government did something else to compensate NIS then there is a problem.
surely it wasn't "hey, could you halve your margins? Why sure GoS let's just forget about those millions"

      Delete
    14. Anonymous11:40

Goodness, read the contract it's all there. It says GoS will use its minority vote in NIS to push for this 50% discount. And yes, NIS agreed and approved it. Any other conspiracies that need to be debunked today?

      Delete
    15. Anonymous12:14

Wait, is it given by NIS, which is owned mostly by Russian taxpayers or directly Serbian government?

      Delete
    16. Anonymous12:21

yes, the discount happen. something was given in return. i dont know what but some discount in excise duty might be one of the options.

      Delete
    17. Anonymous13:42

      Anon 12:14,

The discount has been given by NIS as a business entity. Please stop this taxpayer melodrama.

They did not have any reason to reject the request. They gave a big discount but on the income side they collected their debts from Jat and now they sell twice as much fuel to Air Serbia - and that fuel is paid for. So it was a perfectly rational decision to discount the into-plane differential upon request.

      Delete
    18. Anonymous19:18

So, selling twice as much fuel with same profit is according to you "perfectly rational decision". Problem of this blog is huge interference of JU communication department, posting as Anon. Whenever you defend JU and its controversial business, you should identify yourself. Defending JU with flat sentences, without arguments, doesn't help discussion at this forum where professionals gather. JU communication department deeply underestimates the knowledge of people participating in this forum.

    19. Anonymous08:38

If there is a problem on this blog, that would be hyperactive political activists (such as last Anon) who label as "JU communication department" anyone who dares to oppose or debunk their conspiracy theories. In a civilized world, such malicious attacks are instantly penalized by the removal of the post and/or permanent ban from the forum. Unfortunately the concept of accountability is virtually non existing in Serbia, therefore violent political activists and other bullies have carte blanche to do whatever they wish on the internet. Good for them, bad for Serbia's progress on the civilization ladder.

What is happening to the ATR fleet? The morning wave, supposed to be operated by the ATRs looked like this:

    JU 610 Prague 06:45 06:45 C2 ATR 72
    JU 170 Podgorica 07:00 07:00 A1 Boeing 737-300

    JU 190 Ljubljana 07:15 07:15 C6 Boeing 737-300

Audited by KPMG? LOL. There was a huge scandal in Germany involving KPMG. The local government of Rhineland-Palatinate inteded to sell deficitary Hahn Airport to a "Chinese Consortium". KPMG was the one to prepare the deal. For months huge investments were promised (of course before the election). But the chinese always appeared with one manager only or sometimes nobody came to the foto shoot. The whole story was then blown by a journalist who flew to China to check about the chinese and found out that the "big consortium" was a tiny company in a rotten commie block with 2 or 3 employees trading with plastic cups and similar. So, KPMG was blamed by the government and they blew the contract in the end, producing a huge scandal about the competence of KPMG........the local government was lucky that the story developed after the election and they appointed now another company with the job!

Like all companies, it is made of people and people sometimes make mistakes. In other 99.9% cases, they don't.

It is, however, desperate to claim that it somehow makes mistakes years in a row just with ASL. KPMG is one of four big global auditors.

For political activists: Dinkic brought Etihad to JAT, not the progressive party.

mhm, SNS just embraced it, nurtured it, put its people to run the company and are using it as a PR tool and making taxpayers pay for that JFK-BEG route that is actually a vučić advertisement.

Kako to INN da tvoj životni uzor Kondić sad ne zna posao radit. Mislim da treba da ga se smeni i tebe da se postavi na mesto CEO da im sa ovako savršenim idejama pokažeš kako se radi profitabilnost
