Banja Luka eyes new intercontinental route

Banja Luka Airport is in talks over the introduction of a new intercontinental service, to Africa. Its General Manager, Zoran Injac, said, "We have plans to introduce one new route to Africa, however, it is too early to give any details". The airport is looking to extend its portfolio of destinations following its revival last October, when Ryanair introduced flights from Charleroi, Memmingen and Stockholm Skavsta. "This summer we will offer two weekly charter flights to Turkey and one weekly to Greece. In addition, Ryanair will introduce flights from Berlin, while Air Serbia will maintain five weekly services from Belgrade", Mr Injac added. The leisure flights to Turkey will operate to Antalya and in Greece to Athens.

Banja Luka Airport is also currently in talks with Russian carrier IrAero over potential services from Moscow. "At this point, we can say there is interest from the Russian side. We will do everything that is in our power for this route to be successful", Mr Injac said. However, the General Manager noted that Ryanair remains the airport's most important customer, "The partnership we have with Ryanair is most valuable for Banja Luka at this moment, and we expect to expand this cooperation in the coming period". Mr Injac previously teased of a major "autumn surprise" for the airport. The low cost airline said it will help deliver over 135.000 customers through Banja Luka in 2019.

Bosnia and Herzegovina's third busiest airport is also looking to develop cargo traffic with its General Manager recently signing an agreement with the Minister for Transport and Communications of the government of the Entity of Republika Srpska to overcome delays concerning the construction of a cargo centre. A deal has also been inked with contractors to continue work on the facility. Work on the cargo depot was halted in 2017 after inspectors determined that the construction site did not comply with requirements set out in the contract documents. The cargo terminal will be 900 square metres in size and is valued at 670.000 euros.

BNX is extremely smart to have secured summer charter traffic, JU will go from 1 to 3 weekly flights. That's fantastic. I can't wait to see the schedule.

I feel sorry for Tuzla as their dream run seems to have come to its end. February saw another passenger drop from 35.976 to 30.658. I don't think there is much they can do right now.

As for Africa, maybe we could see HRG-INI-BNX next summer?

Tuzla's decline has nothing to do with Banja Luka. It started when Wizz Air suspended 5 routes which it did in winter at the same time Ryanair started Banja Luka. But in fact none of the routes that are served from Banja Luka have been suspended from Tuzla.

TZL is still very much on a dream run compared to BNX. They already proved to be able to handle 600.000 passengers a year.
In case of BNX it's quite easy to show off statistics if your last year's base is close to zero... Check back in a few years, not everything will be this rosy.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous15:26

Why wouldn't it be rosy in a few years? If it has been rosy for Tuzla with Wizz Air, why couldn't it be rosy for Banja Luka with Ryanair?

This is absolutely not true. You obviously have no idea. Freebird airlines operate charters from Antalya. Total of 15 are scheduled for this summer. 3 in June, 5 in July, 4 in August and 3 in September. Flights operate on Tuesdays.

Last year charters operated from June 12 to August 28 with Freebird A320.

Please don't write things you know nothing about.

Is there a source for your supposed claims that there were charter flights?

Also, Tuzla did not manage to have 600.000 passengers, ever, even with massive backing of the Canton. It reach 584.000 passengers and numbers started to decline from October. TZL already lost some 10.000 passengers so in 2019 it will have around 510.000 passengers.

Umm my own eyes are the source. You basically claimed how there were no charters to Antalya last year and that there will be none this year which are both blatant lies since you are completely uninformed.

Oh and if you need further proof of how uninformed you are:
"Turkey's Freebird Airlines is running summer charters from Antalya to the Bosnian city as of last month".

    15. Anonymous16:10

Once again this proves nothing, it says that they plan on operating them, we don't know if they went through with the plans. TZL tends to be unpredictable.

Also just because you saw a plane at the airport doesn't mean it was regular flight, maybe it was diversion. Or does it mean any plane that lands in Tuzla is there because it somehow magically launched flights. :D

      Delete
    16. Anonymous16:12

There was never Freebird flights to TZL on the announcements on the right and there are no news of the actual launch, that is why I am asking you if those actually happened or if they were only announced.

      Delete
    17. For the sake of ending an unnecessary discussion, charter flights were operated on a regular basis from Antalya to Tuzla last year. There were no special announcements or articles as Freebird Airlines charters from Antalya to Tuzla have been operating since 2015, with the number of rotations increasing over the years. These charters were noted in several articles concerning Tuzla Airport last year.

In just a matter of 1 year, BNX has secured so many options given the size of the airport. This is a greater success story similar to INI.
Now that FR has reborn the Buzz leisure airline, we might see Polish routes to BiH or even UK ones.
This yellow bee may appear in the very near future, if not BiH, then maybe Crna Gora.

VERY GOOD BNX! All the best of luck and applauses for this potential, regional game changer.

Also, as someone who has a lot of family in Srpska, I can safely say that around 90% of the local population would rather fly on Air Serbia than Air Bosnia, especially these days with what's going on. Furthermore, KonTiki is owned by Big Blue (if I am not wrong) and they already have a great partnership with JU, both in BEG and in BNX.
