The site of the new Trebinje Airport in the entity of Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been selected with the first flight to Belgrade planned for December 2021, although its full opening has been earmarked for March 2022. The new airport will be built in the village of Mionići, some ten kilometres from Trebinje. It will feature a 3.5-kiloemtre runway, taxiways totalling 4.5 kilometres and a 7.000 square metre terminal building. The exact location of the future runway has also been selected while the relevant ministries from the entity, as well as Serbia, will meet once per month to monitor and discuss the project.
A taskforce has also been formed which will oversee the project. Among officials from various government ministries, it also includes members of operator Airports of Serbia, the Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency, Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, the Serbian Civil Aviation Directorate and the head of operator Airports of Republika Srpska. The Serbian government previously said it would partially finance the construction of Trebinje Airport by providing 55 million euros, while the state-run Airports of Serbia would later operate it. The process of issuing construction permits will be fastracked in order for flights between Trebinje and Belgrade to launch at the end of next year.
Commenting on the project, the Minister for Transport and Communication of Republika Srpska, Djordje Popović, said, “There are no words to describe the importance of this airport, the grandeur of the project, and the great ambition for it to be completed by the end of next year. I am hopeful that by joining forces, we will do everything in our power for it to be completed by the set deadline and for the airport to be used in its full capacity. This way, Belgrade and Trebinje will become much more accessible”. A lex specialis will be adopted for the project by the parliament of Republika Srpska in the coming days, in order to expedite it. The Serbian Minister for Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Zorana Mihajlović, added, “The construction of Trebinje Airport will enable passengers to travel between Belgrade and Trebinje within forty minutes at most. It will also allow for Trebinje to be connected with the region and the rest of Europe”.

A Neum Airport would have been much more useful if it had to be in Bosnia and would have had at least some potential.
ReplyDeleteIt is almost 4 hours driving between Kastela and Cilipi and a new airport (if there has to be one) in the middle of these two would be ideal, just cos of tourism demand on the coast. But also that would be a seasonal airport only, of course.
There is 0 potential for the new airports in this region... so we dont need them more.

DeleteIt is if you think about it. BiH is not such a small country when it comes to surface area as per European levels. It is bigger than Slovakia, Denmark, Estonia, Moldova, etc. Add to this the density of the mountains in the country meaning that the construction of airports is much cheaper and faster compared to roads or highways.

DeleteMain reason for Trebinje airport would be independence from anyone possibly closing borders or being hostile towards them, just as some comments here are. It guarantees air links to Banja Luka where RS government is and where other key resources like hospitals and businesses are. Same with links to Belgrade. Trebinje airport also gives them opportunity for direct business connectivity without crossing local borders. Additional revenue from increased local tourism and traffic is just a cherry on top. Airport profitability is not the only measure.

Everyone. This location I’m Popovic Polja was original one to create airport for south Dalmatia / Herzegovina region. Elaboration was completed by military and civilian experts of former YUG. Reason being logical placement and traffic reliability during adverse weather. However Vladimir Bakaric lobbied and succeeded to move this Developement onto most unusual location that became Dubrovnik airport. Everyone worth its flying sauce, will tell you that Čilipi airport is most unusual to tell the least if not even extremely dangerous take off / landing spot during crosswind conditions. FYI.

Trebinje airport will also be 20 minutes car ride away from Dubrovnik area tourists. And 30-40 minutes away from Boka Kotorska tourists. And within an hour or so from Niksic and many other parts of Montenegro and RS.
