Italy’s Sky Alps to launch Maribor flights

Italian carrier Sky Alps will introduce a series of flights from three Italian cities to Maribor this coming summer season, marking the resumption of commercial airline services to Slovenia’s second largest city for the first time in three years. Sky Alps will maintain operations from Bolzano, Naples and Pisa to Maribor each Thursday, from June 30 until September 15, with the Dash 8 turboprop aircraft. A total of twelve flights will run from each of the three cities, with services primarily aimed at Italian tourists, however, they are not limited to foreigners. Packages will also be available for those wishing to fly from Maribor to Italy, with tickets available for purchase through the Slovenia Vacation website.

Project Manager and the Director of the tourism company BMG, Božidar Dokl, told the Slovenian state news agency STA the flights would revive Maribor Airport. He added the project has received support from the state-owned Investment Management Company (DRI), which has been running the airport since the former Chinese concessionaire pulled out in 2019. Mr Doki noted the plan is to expand operations to other Italian cities next year, while flights to other European markets would be introduced in 2024.

Return tickets for Sky Alps’ Bolzano flights cost 259 euros, the Naples service is priced at 359 euros, while the Pisa flights will set passengers back 289 euros. The fare includes fifteen kilograms of checked in luggage, as well as a cabin bag weighing up to eight kilograms. The Head of the Slovenian Tourist Board, Ilona Stermecki, said the flights would significantly improve both Maribor’s and Slovenia’s air connectivity. The country’s main airport in Ljubljana currently has no nonstop services to Italy. Maribor Airport handled 4.596 passengers in 2021. It will become Sky Alps’ second destination in the former Yugoslavia, with the carrier to introduce operations between Bolzano to Brač this coming summer as well.

Agree. But maybe it is acceptable for Italian tourists at which these flights are aimed.

Italian tourists are used to flying to Paris for 5€ on RyanAir, so I'm not sure who will be willing to pay these prices.

I haven't read a single post today, or before, concerning Maribor, to underestimate the city. On the contrary, the city, and its airport, should have much more flights, everybody here agree about it. And finally this flights are finally one step in that direction

I remember reading comments how they should close MBX because it doesn't have flights. Thank god people in INI, TZL, BNX didn't listen to them and now they have flights, they are even on the same level as LJU (which was third busiest airport in region 10 years ago). Bravo Fraport and Slovenia I guess..

Finally a positive thread about Slovenia, no?! :)
Those prices are almost like going to New York from many European cities. But, they are destined for richer tourists, which is quite understandable. This region tends to be quite prestigious.
On the other hand, lets hope that FR resume STN-MBX like they did once upon a time.
