NEWS FLASH

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has been named among the top ten best in Eastern Europe at the 2024 Skytrax World Airport Awards held in Frankfurt this week. Belgrade Airport was placed ninth among Eastern Europe’s best airports. It marks the eighth consecutive year it has positioned within the top ten. On the other hand, it was the first time in the past ten years that no other airport from the former Yugoslavia has entered the top ten of any category. Furthermore, no airport in the region was among the top 100 best airports in the world, with Doha’s Hamad International Airport taking the title, followed by Singapore Changi and Seoul Incheon. The 2024 World Airport Awards were based on thirteen million customer nominations across 100 nationalities of air travellers and included 570 airports worldwide.

World Airport Awards 2024 - Best airports in Eastern Europe

The World Airport Awards began in 1999, when Skytrax launched its first global airport customer satisfaction survey. They are regarded as a quality benchmark for the world airport industry, assessing customer service and facilities. The evaluation took place between August 2023 to March 2024. Categories include the world’s best airport, most improved airport, airport with the best staff, best security, and best transit airport, to name a few. According to Skytrax, the survey and awards process is independent and guaranteed free of any airport influence or interference in the final results. There is no entry fee or any type of payment by an airport (or other third party) to be included in the survey or awards, with the survey and awards process fully funded by Skytrax. It evaluates customer satisfaction across forty key performance indicators for airport service and product - from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security, and immigration, through to departure at the gate. The World Airline Awards, also organised by Skytrax, will be held later this year. In 2023, Air Serbia and Croatia Airlines featured among the ten best carriers in Eastern Europe, with the Serbian airline also among Europe’s top regional airlines and among the world's best regional carriers.

Belgrade Airport is currently undergoing a multi-million-euro expansion. A new major duty free, food and beverage facilities, and its overhauled main runway are set to open this summer.

Skytrax fell out of love with Istanbul because the government probably stopped bribing them. This is why IST is sliding in the ranking. If Erdogan doesn't pay skytrax next year we will find IST at 130th place hehheheh

Why is that? Even though I like the airport I find that at times it looks like a homeless shelter. So many people sleeping on the floor or spreading their personal belonging on sleeping chairs etc.

The airport is large, which is absolutely fine but in that case it should have more travelators because it takes a very long time to get from one end to the other. In Doha and Singapore they have skytrains to get you from different parts of the terminal, which I think is essential for a major transfer hub.

When you arrive you usually have to walk a good 10-15 minutes to get to passport control. The issue is the area is used by buggy drivers and it is like a highway, with the same levels of driving as on Istanbul's roads.

I also find it odd that a major hub like Istanbul does not have a pharmacy in the transfer area. Even more so that there is no train link to the city, instead you have to go by taxi, all of which don't use the taxi meter and charge enormous prices (taxi in Istanbul is actually dirt cheap) and it takes an hour to get to the city center because the roads are constantly congested, which is why a train would be really helpful.

Not to mention that the average taxi time of aircraft on arrival is 25 minutes (without any traffic).

I'm not saying IST is bad. On the contrary, it is one of the better airports in the world but I don't think it belongs in the top ten. The top 3 though I think is correct. I have been to all three a few times and I think all could be in number one position.

Absolutely. Skytrax is bought and paid for. I am familiar with Georgian Airports and they are horrible. Batumi airport is tiny. It has one cafe in the arrivals hall and one cafe in the departures hall where you can buy a really bad coffee (regular size) for 31.50 GEL (11 EUR) or maybe a dry and tasteless small pastry "with cheese" for 39 GEL is what you have been craving for your entire life lol

Kutaisi airport is architecturally beautiful but it is made of glass and thag attracts the heat when the sun is shining. Even in winter if the sun is shining it can get as warm as 30 degrees Celsius inside the terminal plus the passport control at Kutaisi Airport is the worst in Georgia. I own an apartment in Batumi so I fly to and from Kutaisi often. It is overall an OK airport because of the cheap busses to Batumi and Tbilisi but it most certainly is not an award winning airport in Eastern Europe.

Agree with you! Even as a Bg, I can say that even Varna airport is soo much better than Sofia. Yes, with the new planned construction, of T3 and refurbishment of T2 the airport will look much better. But till then, the only good thing will be the metro. And until all of these plans are not done, I still wonder how it’s in top 5.

Why is it a disaster? It has a metro line costing 0,80€, 2 airport hotels, 3 bus lines. If you are referring to LCC T1 perhaps yes, but Terminal 2 is just a regular airport that was constructed in 2006. The parking is not the best, but you have many services. And there is a free bus between T1 and T2 just like Barcelona. So, yeah what a "disaster".

haha german portal Air Help every year announces 10 worst, and 10 best airports in the world, according to several criteria: punctuality, quality of service, availability of restaurants, free shops etc. Nikola Tesla is pronounced 5. worst airport in the world, only Banjarmasin airport in south Borneo Indonesia, Malta, Gatwick, and Delgado in Lisbon are worst..You can check on website of AirHelp. There are also 10 best airports, first is Oman, Narita is also there, Qatar, Recife..

Believing your own eyes is not enough - that would not be even remotely fair, comprehensive and detailed review. You would also have to check all other airports and compare all the aspects on all of them. But did you review all of them? Of course not, you are just pissed at one airport and now want to bully us into submitting to just your own opinion of that airport. Your opinion is relevant to you but not others.

Saying that BEG is the 5th worst in the world based on those criteria is a joke and is enough to disqualify them from any serious consideration. I am a regular flier from BEG and even though it's far from being the best it's also far from being the worst.

Yes, there is room for improvement but things did improve over the course of the past year or two. People expect BEG to be like Narita or Changi but then refuse to pay for their ticket more than €100.

I use Belgrade Airport up to 10times a year. Personally I find the passport and Immigration and security very efficient when leaving. This is probably the best thing about the place. From a design perspective its very poorly thought through. One good thing however is the abundance of seats around the place near gates. But in general its nowhere near an architectural wonder and the lack of integration with public transport remains shameful.

Exactly, I've flown to and from SOF several times and the airport is extremely basic and somewhat ugly. The security and passport controls are located upstairs in a tiny area. People complain about BEG passport control but SOF is even worse. They have something like 4 or 5 booths.

Then there are the bus gates downstairs. It's an extremely small and crowded area. With us there were 2 or 3 other flights (Ryanair) and you didn't have anywhere to sit and the a/c wasn't really working. It was a horrible experience.
