Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has reopened following a temporary closure after an unauthorised vehicle was seen driving across the apron earlier today. According to media reports, a security guard allowed the car resembling an official vehicle to enter the restricted zone near the Jat Tehnika hangar, after which the individual drove around the nearby aprons for some time before fleeing the scene. The person was arrested near the boarder between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and has been detained for 48 hours on suspicion of committing a criminal offense of endangering air traffic safety. An arrest warrant has been issued for the security personnel. Details of the incident remain sparce.
In a statement, Belgrade Airport said, "We take this situation very seriously and have promptly implemented preventive measures. Based on the authorities' assessment, additional controls will be introduced in a specific part of the airport, which may temporarily impact the flight schedule. We are fully cooperating with the authorities to clarify the circumstances and take further corrective actions to improve operations". It added it could not comment on the incident itself until an investigation is carried out. Air Serbia issued a statement noting that today’s temporary closure may affect operations this afternoon and evening. “Air Serbia is doing everything in its power to maintain operations in line with the planned flight schedule”. A number of incoming flights have been delayed

Why was the security person arrested? Unless there is evidence that he collaborated with the suspect but was tricked, would that not be an unreasonable use of force by the prosecutor/authorities? Normally you would get suspended from job or fired for that, not arrested. Doesn’t the person who trained the security and set the security precedures and stardards carry the same responsability too?

DeleteThe employee was also arrested because under Serbian law this is a criminal offense. An airprot is a high risk zone and as such is specially treated.

DeleteAn international company but the franchise in Serbia is owned by someone close to the ruling party. That's how they got the job to manage BEG's security 2 years ago. I'm sure it's a multi million deal. With all due respect, most of the Securitas workers at BEG look like they are from a support class.

DeleteAre you like serious? Of course it does. It's his job to make sure there are systems in place which prevent just anyone from breaching your security. This happened in BEG twice in like a week. He's young and inexperienced. Time for him to go. When Berisot ( a seasoned employee) was there, this never happened.

ReplyDeleteFollowing the incident at the automated passport control, they are now watching this area from the stairs that lead to passport control from the check-in desks. However, most of their time is spent denying guests and passengers the right to congregate in the area as they “obstruct the view” even though this is a completely unrestricted part of the facility and there is no signage whatsoever to claim otherwise. Now they are keeping “attention wet floor” sign in the area so they can have an argument to request people to move. All the while we have a guy driving a car up and down the runway. Clowns.

DeleteDCV published a statement where they mention entry was guarded by JAT Tehnika security personel. That could mean it's not Belgrade Airport security staff responsibility. Do we know citizenship of the suspect?
ReplyDeletePerhaps someone actually supervising the self-serve e-gates could have stopped the crawling lady which made us a mockery around the world. However, it does not explain how no one asked her for her boarding pass until she was seated on the plane to Malta.

ReplyDeleteWhat are the chances that some countries, in particular those very focused on security issues like the US, could rescind the approvals for flights from Belgrade Airport? It took a while to get everything in order a few years ago and in line with the US requests, but could we lose it all because of these bizarre incidents?
