Former Yugoslav markets handled 318.927 passengers on flights to and from Spain during the January - April period, data from Spanish airport operator Aena show. Low cost carriers dominated traffic between the region and Spain across all former Yugoslav markets during the quieter first four months of the year.
Serbia
Serbia was the largest market in the former Yugoslavia for flights to Spain during the first four months of the year, with 149.976 passengers travelling between the two countries. During this period, a total of six routes were operated, with Barcelona being the busiest, handling 70.033 passengers. Air Serbia carried 65.744 passengers on its Spain routes during the first four months of the year, with an average load factor of 80% across its Spanish network. On the other hand, Wizz Air, which had more capacity in the Spanish market than its competitor, handled 84.232 travellers, achieving an average load factor of 90%.

Croatia
Croatia saw 109.235 passengers on its Spain routes during the first four months of the year, with Malaga, served exclusively by Ryanair from Zagreb, being the busiest route, accounting for 27.593 passengers. During the January - April period, Croatia Airlines welcomed 15.306 travellers on its two Spanish routes, Barcelona and Madrid, with an average load factor of 73% across the two services. Ryanair is the largest carrier between the two markets, while Vueling and Iberia also maintain operations. Croatia's Spain flights peak during the summer season, driven by significant seasonal traffic, particularly to Dubrovnik.

Macedonia
Wizz Air is the sole operator between Macedonia and Spain, operating flights from Skopje to both Madrid and Barcelona. It handled a total of 32.995 passengers on these routes during the sample period, achieving an average load factor of 75.8% over the four months. Madrid was naturally busier than Barcelona due to a higher number of flights, handling 18.996 passengers to and from the Spanish capital.
Slovenia
Slovenia welcomed 15.683 passengers on its Spain routes during the January - April period. These comprised services to Barcelona, operated by Vueling, and Gran Canaria, served by airBaltic, although the country also recorded charter traffic during the period. With the highest number of flights, Barcelona was the busiest route, handling 11.665 passengers and achieving an average load factor of 87.3%, according to the data.
Bosnia and Herzegovina
The sole route between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Spain, linking Sarajevo and Girona and operated by Ryanair, handled 11.038 passengers during the January - April period, with a load factor of 84%.

Those LJU numbers should be reason enough for more Spain routes to be launched ASAP.

DeleteWow, JU had over 240,000 passengers just on Spain routes last year (looking at the table). Impressive
ReplyDeleteIt's not impressive if you compare their numbers to Wizz Air. Everyone kept saying here how they dominate Spain from BEG but in reality they don't.
DeleteThey do dominate on an annual level. Majority of Air Serbia's Spain routes are to coastal cities where demand is highest in summer.
DeleteAnd also 80% LF during slowest months of the year for a legacy carrier is quite good.
DeleteWell majority of Wizz Air's routes are also to the coast as they fly to MAD, BCN and ALC.
DeleteTwo out of three are coastal airports. JU has more seasonal flights I guess.
More than a third of my flights to Madrid and Malaga over the last two years were transfers.
DeleteOnly seasonal route Air Serbia has in Spain is to Palma. That is completely as expected.
DeleteAnd soon Seville and Tenerife joins. Wizz is cooked.
Delete@14:08 oh give it a rest
DeleteRoom for both airlines exist on BEG Spain routes.
DeleteYesss
DeleteI wonder what is the % of Slovenian passengers on the Malaga flights from Zagreb. It's impressive this route has more pax than any other from Croatia.
ReplyDeleteFrom my experience it's
Delete1. Croats
2. Spaniards
3. Slovenes
From experience I'd say at least 30%
DeleteThanks. I definitely think at least one or two Spanish routes could work from LJU.
DeleteZagreb flights to Spain and Greece are filled with Slovenians (30-45%), which is a shame, but on the other hand better than driving to venice
DeleteOh goody, here they go again.. Yes yes we all know, you have money, we are poor and miserable, we don't fly, only you fly. Go out and drink a beer or wine, day is sunny.
DeleteSlovenes do tend to holiday more abroad
DeleteIt's wild that W6 can get 90% loadfacors to leisure routes to Spain while flying A321s.
ReplyDeleteEspecially in winter months
DeleteTheir neos have 239 seats and yet they manage to fill them!
DeleteYes, but, sometimes you can buy return ticket for as low as 40-50 eur.
DeleteAnd?
DeleteWell, if they were sold at 4-5 EUR, they might be able to sell out the 1.000-seater.
DeleteWhy are people surprised that Spain is popular in winter?
DeleteI am not surprised.
Deleteand what is price for Ryan ticket from ZAG to BCN or MAD?
Deleteis it over 150EUR? as LF is pretty darn compared to Wizz's 90%.
Ryanair doesn't fly to Barcelona or Madrid from Zagreb. Relax and go for a walk
DeleteRyanair flies from ZAG to Girona, which is one of three Barcelona's airports, with direct bus service which reaches Barcelona city in less than an hour.
Deleteonly seasonal

ReplyDeleteNow we know why the JU CEO feels threatened by Wizz Air's presence in BEG. They seem to be running them over in Spain. I am not surprised, JU was very slow to increase capacity and frequencies to key destinations especially to Malaga.
True dar.
DeleteRunning them over? Based on four slowest months of the year?
DeleteImagine what will happen in July and August, Wizz gonna have LF of 98-100% and JU will have it 82-85%.
DeleteHow yes no. JU's LF to Spain market is 95+% during summer. JU added ALC, so W6 LF will go down. Also seasonal JU's PMI is starting and later adding SVQ and TFS. And W6 is adding... nothing. Imagine that.
DeleteYou see to see things as some sort of fight to the death? Its weird. Grow up
DeleteWizz is a copy-paste airline. What destination did they develope?
DeleteWhat the hell does it mean to "develop a destination"?
DeleteIt has no meaning. Wait till FR enters the chat and beat ya'll.
DeleteWizz developed Malta, Nice, Alicante, etc...
DeleteAir Serbia and befofe it Jat Airways and Yugoslav Airlines have been flying to Malta for decades.
DeleteSo 3 more destination for AS in Spain out of this statistics. YU will much more increase pax numbers. Hope Ibiza is the next.
DeleteAnd OU dead last out of all airlines serving Spain-Croatia with just 2 f-ing routes. Crazy!
ReplyDeleteThey are last on almost all markets where they have competition.
DeleteAt least loads are much higher and healthier than average
DeleteNo rush 09.06. It's too early. They are around for only 35+ years. And they have to take care of Minken and Vrankvurt. It's not as easy as you think 🙂
DeleteHilarious
DeleteActually the Croatia Airlines load factor is surprisingly high in this article
DeleteAnother proof of their servility, inertness and incompetence: instead having much more flights to markets with better LF, probably even better yields, they keep flying 10 daily to Minken and Vrankvurt, for peanuts and at loss. Exactly what was and is my point.
DeleteThis Minken joke is still funny every time article mentions Croatia..you're not boring or trolling all the time with the same thing. Think of something else.
DeleteMinken (and Vrankvurt) are not even remotely a joke. People ruining OU, and entire Croatia (state) pronounce it that way. It
DeleteIt's not trolling, it's sad reality. And if you are bored reading it, just skip it. Me above as well. Text "escaped"
DeleteThank you for the stats. Very interesting
ReplyDeleteThe SKP-Spain routes are a bit softer in performance than I expected. Granted, this is mostly for winter period.
ReplyDeleteAnd surprisignly Madrid ahead to Barcelona.
DeleteI'm not surprised at all. These are more leisure than diaspora routes. Even in the article from 2 weeks ago in the interview with the Wizz exectuives he said leisure routes are a bit of a risk from SKP. I think they already tried BCN from SKP once and then turned it seasonal and then discontinued it. We will see how this develops and if the market has matured since then.
Delete@9.39 it says in the text it is not surprising since there were more flights to Madrid than Barcelona.
Deletehave in mind its 3 weekly
Deleteinteresting that MAD-SKP has more pax than MAD-TIA for the Jan-April period
DeleteMany passengers from SK have EU passports and work in Spain
DeleteHow do you know the load factor for MAD-TIA? I was actually expecting BCN to be more popular, a bit surprised that MAD has better loads
Delete@11.39 18.996 vs 16.789
DeleteIm astonished that there are more passengers from MK to Spain than to markets like Netherlands
With LCC having 75% LF termination is imminent.
DeleteDo remember that both routes get subsidies.
Delete@14.21 your wet dream?
Deletethe A320 is too small , it would be >100%
DeleteMarch: 5096 pax, April : 5569 pax.
Delete4 (weeks) x 6 flights x 239 seats = 5736 seats. Depending on the calender there can be ´+/- one rotation. Its excellent
The North macedonian market is doing so well.
DeleteŠpanija je tamo gde Jugoslavija nikad stigla niije.
ReplyDeleteI moglo bi puno više letova biti.
I am surprised Iberia never considered BEG flights. Seems like a missed opportunity.
ReplyDeleteTheir loss. You have many airlines in the west that have a big hole in the region and are alergic to many eastern routes or have just started discovering markets in the region.
DeleteIberia just launched OTP flights so maybe they will consider BEG once Wizz Air shuts their BEG base. They won't be able to operate MAD flights anymore.
DeleteThey are not allergic to the Balkans, they're allergic to making losses in markets where yields are low.
DeleteBy the way Iberia flies across all of Eastern Europe:
Budapest
Prague
Ljubljana
Zagreb
Split
Dubrovnik
Tivat
Tirana
Bucharest
Athens and 5 Greek islands
And they codeshare to
Sofia
Krakow
Vilnius
Riga
Talinn
^ What a way to spin it.
DeleteTivat, Ljubljana (barely any flights), Tirana, Bucharest have all been added in just last 2 years, most in last year. Out of the ten destinations you listead (some of which are not Eastern Europe) 7 are summer seasonal and mostly high summer season, operational for 2 months.
All of them are in the eastern region of Europe compared to Spain. Get over it man.
DeleteIB doesn't serve BEG but serves much smaller markets for the same reason BA doesn't serve BEG. Partly due to yields but also partly due to politics.
DeleteWhy would politics have ANYTHING to do with why Iberia and BA dont serve Belgrade. Get a gip. Seriously get a grip.
DeleteUnlike in most markets in Eastern Europe, in Serbia they have actual direct competition.
DeleteDidn't Vueling use to fly from BCN to Belgrade a few years ago?
DeleteSerbia is a relatively poor market, small, and with a strong national airline. There is no room for Iberia in Belgrade.
DeleteThey'll come one day. Its only a matter of time.
DeleteYes, only the rich fly Iberia. LOL!
DeleteIts not a bad airline anymore tbh.
DeleteInteresting that Serbia alone accounts for almost half of all Spain traffic from the former Yugoslavia.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget that BEG and JU also offer transfers so they also boost numbers. Lots of transfers to especially to BCN.
DeleteOU can carry transfers too. Granted their network is not very good but they can offer transfers to Dubrovnik and Split if nothing else.
DeleteYeah but OU tends not to schedule its flights properly. I wouldn't be surprised if JU carried more transfers from SPU and DBV to BCN than OU via ZAG.
DeleteThe real surprise is Slovenia. Nearly 16.000 passengers with just two scheduled routes is quite respectable for such a small market.
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteIt's the richest Ex-Yu country and they have barely any seaside, so they need to fly away on holiday.
Deletebut where is the "real surprise" there? There are other markets with also "only" two scheduled routes with double that passenger numbers
DeleteGirona continues to perform well for Sarajevo. Ryanair seems to have found the right niche route there.
ReplyDeleteWhy would it be a niche route
DeleteWell its not for western European flights, but for BiH its quite niche. Nice
DeleteI don't think you know what niche means
DeleteBEG is full for Spain? Or dou you think will be more new routes?
ReplyDeleteDo
DeleteWell new routes to Spain are launching this year - Seville and Tenerife coming up in September.
DeleteThey will announced in december 25 i,talk about new routes for 27
DeleteWe are waiting for Ibiza as summer seasonal, hope they will get slots for SS27.
DeleteBeside Ibiza, the only possible destination in Spain are Bilbao and Gran Canaria.
Why not FUE or ACE?
Delete@11:42 we? Are you from ibiza. Nice
DeleteI am not from Ibiza, I am from Belgrade. JU has been trying for 2 years now to obtain good slots at IBZ, but without success.
DeleteOh 'we' as in Belgrade avgeeks. Ibiza nighttime operations are a possibility if JU wanted to think of it. Ibiza is very very poorly unconnected to eastern europe (ok some language fascists are obsessing about that term here nowadays, but you get the point) so JU would be a nice link. However if they cant get slots that work with conncetions they can easily get ones in the middle of night if they believed they could make money from it.
DeleteWell done Macedonia 32k combine passengers to Spain is amazing numbers and they are achieve in not peak months . Summer those numbers will grow and in the end of the year possible we can see close to 100k passengers!!!
ReplyDeleteJust there '!' today?
DeleteMacedonia missing one more Spain coast destinations for sure!!
DeleteNorth Macedonia Lisbon one day
DeleteYou mean Skopje- Lisbon one day , there is no airport or city called North Macedonia ;)
DeleteLegal speaking there is my dear. There really is :)
DeleteCan you please show more respect to the Macedonian people .. admin?
DeleteIts not disrepectful to use a countrys international regonosed name when discussing aviation. Please grow up. Really, just grow up.
Delete
