New Priština terminal on hold
Construction of Priština Airport’s brand new terminal has been delayed once again. Although work on the new multi million Euro project was supposed to have begun already, nothing except a visualisation of the future building has been placed in front of the existing terminal. The Turkish-French consortium, Limak Holding and Aeroport de Lyon, which will run Priština’s airport for the next 20 years, promised to begin construction of the new terminal building back in January. However, a delayed handover of the airport to its new management postponed the project the first time around. The price tag for the new terminal is expected to amount to 140 million Euros together with supporting infrastructure.There is hope that work could begin soon. Priština Airport is one of EX-YU’s biggest airports when it comes to passenger numbers. In 2010 it handled 1.305.532 passengers, placing itself only behind Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana. So far this year the airport is recording a passenger increase of 5%.
With this latest delay, the terminal is now expected to be completed in January 2013.

PRN is doing well. It has had double digit growth for four consecutive years since 2006, so a 5 pct growth (if maintained) this year represents a decent result.
ReplyDeleteA lot of the growth in the coming years will depend on how Adria, Belle Air or other airlines that intend to use the airport as their secondary hub perform.
Looking at airports like, say, VNO there is only so much growth without a 'home' airline.
Also, somewhat related, I tought the Serbian side would request that JAT be allowed to operate out of PRN as part of the 'free movement' agreement that is expected to be signed in the coming days between Serbia and Kosovo. No mention of that to date. In return, Serbia would have probably had to open its air space to airplanes that take off and land at PRN. Both sides are loosing funds with current restrictions in place, one more than the other, but still it doesn't mean that it's not a silly situation.

ReplyDeleteDo you think Kosovars would fly Jat? Say, if there was a double-daily ATR flight, early morning and late afternoon. Or is connecting through Belgrade maybe not that attractive, especially now with JP, LH and others at PRN?
^It probably wouldn’t be profitable but I’m sure that JU would be forced to fly to PRN by the govt for political reasons. Similarly they were forced to fly to BNX until they finally managed to get out of it.
