Record May for Belgrade Airport

Belgrade Airport bounces back

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has recorded its best May passenger results since the collapse of the former Yugoslavia. Serbia’s busiest airport welcomed 300.993 passengers, an increase of 5.8% compared to the same month last year. It handled an additional 43 flights compared to last May, totalling 3.787 for the entire month. The airport was aided by the combined May Day and Easter public holidays, the start of the charter flight season and the introduction of several seasonal services on behalf of Jat Airways.

So far this year, Nikola Tesla Airport has welcomed 1.156.590, only 504 passengers more than the same period last year, or an increase of 0.04%. The airport’s record May results have helped it make up for the losses it saw earlier on in the year. The airport will hope that numbers will continue to improve in June with the arrival of Etihad Airways and the launch of several new Wizz Air destinations. Following the recent bankruptcy of the Turkish based charter carrier Sky Airlines, it has been announced that Freebird Airlines will take over its planned flights to Belgrade and Niš.

Meanwhile, Serbia’s second airport, Niš Constantine the Great, welcomed 2.280 passengers in May, down 3% compared to the same month last year. In further bad news for the airport, Mistral Airlines has cancelled its service from Trieste to the city due to low interest after only several flights but says it is likely to resume operations during the peak summer season. Constantine the Great Airport has recorded a considerable passenger decrease so far this year by welcoming 7.427 travellers, down 26%.

Many airports in the former Yugoslavia have recorded significant growth in May. As has been the case over the past five years they will be published on EX-YU Aviation News throughout the month.

Oh no, what will those jealous bitches do now when Belgrade is back to recording growth :/

On a more serious note, it is really good to see them back in the black. I am sure that from now on it will only become better, especially once the Etihad deal goes through.

      why would anyone be jealous?

All the airports in ex-yu put together don't have the traffic of some small-town airport in the USA

ZAD had great growth. Possibly 485000 pax this year.

I think the pass. numbers were good but I see a problem with regression analysis, movement of RSI and MA50 moving below MA200.

April was catastrophic - no review, but now top story! Congratulation...

Still waiting for analysis of Jat problems:
    - what happened to A320 leasing
    - what happened to ATR leasing
    - will there be Adria A319 leasing or not
    - how many cancellations and long delays was and sill are because of fleet shortage

No, those are just percentage of reduction in number of passengers in April, but those are not answers to questions that your readers are very interested:
      - what happened to A320 leasing
      - what happened to ATR leasing
      - will there be Adria A319 leasing or not (why so huge delay)
      - how many cancellations and long delays was and sill are because of fleet shortage

And who will be responsible for that fiasco, which is definitely the biggest one in ExYU air traffic history.

You should know that this is about Belgrade Airport and not JAT so all your question are totally irrelevant to this article.

      - what happened to A320 leasing?

Talk was of A319 leasing from JP, and not a A320.

      - what happened to ATR leasing?

They apparently only found 1 and that is awaiting delivery in Denmark. Theyre waiting for the Serbian government to give guarentees they will make payments for the leasing of the aircraft.

      - will there be Adria A319 leasing or not?

Everything is ready for the aircraft to come to BEG. The leasing company wants guarantees from the Serbian government that payments for the lease will be made. Of course, they are still waiting and of course will not give JAT the a/c until it gets the confirmation.

      - how many cancellations....

many, and theyre still going on. Most cancellations are to TIV and TGD.

It's good to see reversal of the "BEG plummet" trend from April :) Let's hope JU gets its act together and we see their numbers grow as well.

Congrats to Belgrade. I personally didn´t expected it.Since JAT has fleet shortage and did not do it´s best in May.
Nis Airport can increase only if starts direct links to certain destinations. Trieste was just wrong destination. I am really expecting to see W6 or JU soon on INI with destinations such a FMM, BVA, BSL or even NYO.

Good job BEG! Last month was catastrofic comparing to the April last year because of the Easter. Last Year we had Easter in April.
It seems like June is bringing many good news.

      And how about Croatian statistics??

I mean, it is clear that ZAG,SPU and DBV are succsesfull, but saying that Zadar will have around 500 000 pax is rediculous.

What's next? OSI will have 800 000,or what??

Based on 370000 year 485000-500000 is not ridiculous. Take a look a figures so far this year and go figure

    3. Anonymous20:50

With 371256 pax last year and now a Ryanair summer base 500,000 pax is a possibility, just look at the 30% increase in pax thus far this summer.
Sounds as if you are jealous beyond belief and deluded.

I think that would be very interesting article to write about as to find out what is really happening behind the curtain . To me is just unbelievable that somebody will build airport terminal and then leave it to rot and end up as an derelict building. COME ON EX YU AVIATION , DO SOME INVESIGATION

Kralevo Airport Morava, need to have extra investment. To extending runway up to 400 m, wading runway for 15m. Finishing second level of terminal.
Fitting fence round airport in accordance with ICAO. Need to build cargo terminal, proper road to airport. Serbian authority to be give way for low cost airlines, cargo airlines, charters. To upgrading airport for cargo up to B747... No way
for any serious advance for Morava International with above condition. No improvisation. Much more than I have mentioned. Serbian authority know, but ordinary people including me not much. Rodney Marinkovic, Aircraft Mechanical Engineer.

Good to know now that Freebird takes over Skys passengers and that
those peoples holidays not have to be cancelled!
Btw: Freebird also replaces Sky on all routes to Ex Yu.
So i wish everyone a nice summer!

Well you do know that there was Easter in May and it was in April last year. Even more it was combined with 1st May (most of diapora can come to short break because of it). So 5% is not that mach concerning Easter in combination of 1st May!

Interesting to see Turkish Airlines doing so well in BEG despite heavy competition.
Yesterday double daily 737-800,today double daily A321.
Pegasus Airlines struggles to fill its 737-800 so they usually downgrade
    to 737-400.
It is heir only one,so old that they intend to phase it out alreay this year...

These today's TK flights transported tourists of tour-operator "1A Travel", both flights to Istanbul had more 350 passengers altogether.

@Anon 9:33 PM - Flew on that plane 2 days ago. It is in worse condition than Jat's much older 737's. Pegasus flights are completely full, even on "slow" days of the week such as Tuesday, so i don't know where are you getting your info/assumptions from. The 734 has 168 seats vs. 180. Not a striking downgrade obviously, besides the plane is rotated regularly between the destinations. 95% of time it's the 738 flying to BEG. On our flight from BEG to SAW, among the passengers there were like 30 Mexicans. The airport is by the way a rather nice alternative to Ataturk, especially if just transiting.
