Impressive growth for Skopje as Ljubljana ends years of decline

As August comes to a close, Skopje Alexander the Great Airport has continued to record strong passenger growth seen throughout the year. In July, Macedonia’s two international airports, Skopje and Ohrid, handled 128.808 passengers, resulting in a 12% increase and one of their busiest Julys in years. In the first half of 2013 Skopje Airport welcomed 444.869 passengers through its doors, an increase of 18.2% compared to the same period last year. The growth is being driven primarily by Wizz Air. Such trends should continue in 2014 as the low cost airline prepares to base a second aircraft in the city next spring. Skopje is hoping to welcome one million passengers by the end of the year and eventually break its 2000 passenger record when it handled 1.002.000 passengers.

Meanwhile, Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport has also seen its numbers improve after years of stagnation. Slovenia’s busiest airport welcomed 575.463 travellers in the first half of the year, a solid increase of 7%. More than half of the passengers welcomed at Ljubljana Airport came from London, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Zurich, Munich and Paris. Foreign carriers accounted for the bulk of the increase with Wizz Air, Montenegro Airlines, Turkish Airlines, easyJet and Finnaair all recording solid growth on their flights to and from the Slovenian capital. Adria Airways’ improved performance also aided the airport’s numbers with the Slovenian national carrier holding a 70% share of all flights at the airport.

Ljubljana Airport is expected to see its numbers continue to improve next month, boosted by the European Basketball Championships being hosted in the country. The airport’s improving numbers have also resulted in improved revenue, with the airport recording a profit of three million euros. Next month, on September 16, the airport’s shareholders will decide whether to go ahead with the planned construction of a new multi million euro terminal.

That’s pretty impressive growth for Skopje 18% but I don’t think they will manage 1 mill this year. Next year definitely.

A good picture of todays Serbia was given last night in Thun, Switzerland. Serbias/Yugoslavia Football once top 10 in Europe with Partizan playing Europacup Final, Crvena Championscup winner 1991 etc and last night they lost 3-0 against Thun. Belgrade being a city of almost 2 mio, on the other side little Thun with just about more than 40000 heads.
Eventhough this is complete off topic but for all these there is reasons behind, similar reasons in football, economy, aviation, politics, general society.

it s the picture we hve from Serbia since two decades and it barely changes. Seldom there is positive news and if than it s by individual persons, might be in private live/culture/science or than by Nole Djokovic, Serbia s best and most succesful ambassador to the world.

it s hard to see how things are in real down there and also in other corners of former YU

now back to the Topics: ex YU, do u know about any extra charter flights to LJU during Eurobasket?
Good they improve numbers to this will hopefully convince the shareholders (all government anyway) to vote for the Airport Expansion.

SKP airport is anyway the pride of our ex YU aviation Region. Nice terminal and amazing growing figures... Bravo and congratulations :-)

According to Serbian Statistic Bureau, Belgrade had in 2012 1,2 Mio inhabitants.
Belgrade Metropolitan Area is home to maximum 1,65 Mio people.

Yes, but there is a catch with the public cenzus.. There are many inhabitants in Belgrade who live in Belgrade since 40 or even 60 years, and are still registred in some outer village in the province. There is also a more than 100 000 students population who are not registated as inhabitants of Belgrade, and finally many young people working in Belgrade are still officially registreted in their parent´s houses.

And only Belgrade have students, those who work there and are registrated somewhere else, illegal emigrants etc. Just Belgrade... all other cities does not have this, and their number is 100% of real inhabitants!

If you've traveled everywhere around you just have to come to Belgrade and see how does a city with around 2 million inhabitants feels like, which is what Belgrade has, census or not.

It seems that the passengers will be boarded from gate A10 for these remote parking spots.
Jat's morning flight to Vienna and Croatia Airlines' flight to Split will be both loaded from there. From what I remember that gate is closed off and not in use. It hasn't been for quite some time.

It is also interesting to note that Jat's morning departures with Atrs to Ohrid, Thessaloniki and Podgorica departed from B gates. That's a first. Do they board these too from normal A gates or..?

Interesting, maybe it only works for aircraft that do not require the air-bridge? When I landed at Belgrade ten days ago the air-bridge opening was closed off with a wooden plank. That whole area is disgusting and it looks as if the whole part of the terminal will collapse any moment now.

great news for SKP and LJU. Eurobasket will have a big impact on LJU. hope there will be use of MBX during Eurobasket.
little OT: SU will continue double daily to BEG this winter with 320 and 321, but will reduce ZAG from daily to 4 weekly. they will also change plane, instead SSJ100, they will use 319. source: Aviokarta.net

Very old news. These were announced months ago, I believe even before the summer season. Someone posted about it on this blog.
The only difference is that Aeroflot initially announced that Belgrade would be operated double daily with A319s.

That is normal concerning the fact that after Croatian entrance in EU Russian citizens must have visa to enter Croatia, and they did not to have it before entering. That is why even in SPU, DBV, PUY and ZAD number of Russian passengers and flights went down a lot. So, we expected those cuts from Aeroflot.

Nice, fine, art deco, modern as the aviation busniss itself.

Personally, I hope that they will go back to Aeroput or JAT soon. This way nobody will acknowladge the continuity to new brand, and "Air Serbia" will never become a regional airliner with that brand.

Btw., the adress airserbia.com was obviously aquired for Air Serbia in the meanwhile.

Very ugly proposals, much more than the new livery.
And what's the fuss all about the name Air Serbia?
Etihad and Government have chosen that one, end of story...and there won't be any changes soon, because that costs a hell of a lot of money.
Some people like it, the others not but it is pointless to cry about it every second day ;)
