Air Serbia leases third A320

Three A320s to opearte for Air Serbia this summer

Air Serbia has leased a third Airbus A320 for the summer season, EX-YU Aviation News learns. The Serbian carrier has leased two former Jetstar Airways A320s and a Bingo Airways aircraft of the same type. The additional A320 is being leased as a result of the late arrival of the A319s, which have been delayed due to bureaucratic procedures. The first A320 which will operate on behalf of the Air Serbia fleet will be the Bingo Airways jet (formerly registered SP-ACK). Following test flights in Shannon in Ireland, the aircraft recently arrived in Munich where it will undergo cabin reconfiguration. The jet has now been registered YU-APH and was recently issued permits by several countries to operate on behalf of the airline.

Another two A320s have been leased from Jetstar and are currently in Singapore. They too are set to fly to Germany soon where they will be fitted with the new cabins. All of the aircraft are wearing the Air Serbia livery. The three A320s are all eight years old. The former Bingo Airways jet was first delivered to Air Deccan in 2006 while the two Jetstar aircraft were delivered new to the Australian airline. On the other hand, Air Serbia’s sixth A319, a former Belle Air aircraft, now registered YU-APA, is set to enter commercial service on behalf of the Serbian carrier soon. During the weekend the aircraft was ferried to Munich to be fitted with the new cabins. It also recently received permits from various European aviation authorities to operate flights on behalf of the Serbian airline.

The delay in the arrival of the A319 jets has forced Air Serbia to push back the retirement of its aging Boeing 737-300s from scheduled service. Originally planned for March 31, the last Boeing 737 is now set to operate its final scheduled flight for the airline on April 28 between Belgrade and Stockholm, though further changes are possible.

  3. The information about the third A320 surfaced around a month and a half ago. At that time there were not that many problems with the deliveries of the new A319s.
In other words, the lease of the third A320 has little to do with the A319s.
There are enough routes which could be upgauged, especially as we get closer to the summer season.

    4. He doesn't speculate, he relies on the information he is provided with by his sources in Air Serbia.
He is doing a fine job given the fact how hard it is to come by most information related to the internal functioning of the airline.

    1. I managed to read the whole thing. Fairly straight forward:

      - Clean sheer, GoS assumes all liabilities
      - Each invest 100M untill end of 2016
      - CEO and CFO + EY staff sent to JU are paid by Etihad and charged back to JU

Now, this seems to be only a draft. It would be interesting to see the terms of the managemant contract. How much they are charging JU for their service.

      Delete
    2. Yeah, it's not a bad deal. At least nothing as some have speculated it to be.
It's also pretty straightforward on how much each side has to invest.

    3. Anonymous14:43

What do you mean "it's not a bad deal" ? It's an AWESOME deal ! What would the alternative have been, particularly after 3 failed tender attempts ? It would have been lights out and end of JU .... Just ask any of the ex-yu carriers what they would give to be in JU's shoes today ....

    4. Agreed, awesome deal +apparently no agricultural land involved LOL.

Loved the fact that that government employees must use AirSerbia/partners even if competition has a direct flight and they don’t. It’s a common sense (why wouldn’t you spend money in a company you own) but very often that concept is lost in all ex-Yu countries. Before somebody starts trashing me with “they should fly whoever is the cheapest” I have to say I don’t agree. Serbia owns 51%, company pays income taxes (one day hopefully), it employs your people who also pay taxes – no matter how much LH fare (for example) is cheaper they should still use JU.

    5. It was interesting to see the language about the dedicated terminal and its reconstruction. Lately I haven’t heard anything on this, maybe it didn’t make the final cut.

I am shocked SHOCKED that no aggriculture is involved. It's a crystal clear deal, no strings involved.

In article it is very well clearly put "Ugovori su potpisani i prestavljeni kao deo Sporazuma o saradnji Vlade RS i Vlade UAE": "This Agreement is agreed in furtherance of the principles underlying the Intergovernmental Agreement on Mutual Incentives and Protection of investment and the Intergovernmental Agreement on Co-operation entered into between the GoS and the GoUAE on 17th February 2013 (the "Treaties")". So it is clear that something big is behind that deal.

But more important that this is fact that Etihad will BORROW MONEY to Air Serbia and that this borrowed money will be converted into shares. So, we will borrow you money which you will give back, but we will still have shares, so we get them for free after you will pay back.

    8. I don’t think you are hater or anything but I think you are reading this incorrectly. This is very common language in the investment world (which I’m somewhat involved in). If you’d like to start work right away and not wait for the final contract is signed (which sometimes takes long time) you sign initial MoU. In a layman’s terms, I’ll give you money so that we can start doing what we intend to and then if I’m happy with everything (results of due diligence etc.) then we convert my investment into shares and you don’t have to repay the loan. If in any way I’m not happy and would like to bail out, you owe me money. Even in your post you say this if you read it carefully.

Don’t get me wrong, there could be a lot of things in this contract that are damaging for Serbia. Unless you have a complete text including all the addendums nobody knows. This is a first sniff of such an agreement (not even a final version) and there could be a lot of things involved here that they don’t want to disclose. What you are point to is not one of them.

    9. Given the track record, I fully understand why people of all exYu countries don’t trust their elected officials. Unfortunately, in matters like these we are going to have to take their word for it because if nothing else the other side (EY in this case or ZAIC in ZAG) won’t allow it. Or they’ll release the contract but have army of lawyers burry all the important details somewhere else. And trust me on this, this level of transparency rarely exist anywhere, especially not in Western countries. Politicians (here in NA at least, can’t speak for Europe) mastered corruption long time ago. So much so that they legalized under a name of lobbying.

This is not the final deal with signatures. Some items have clearly changed from what was published. But even this is not the bad deal for Air Serbia and the government. Lufthansa is clearly pi**ed off, but it's their own fault - why didn't they offer better deal to JAT?

      Delete
    11. Anonymous09:08

      Hahahahahaha... how pretentious.... hahahaha...

Lufthansa has 729 planes including subsidiaries. For sure they are not pi**ed because of some completely irrelevant teeny company from that country in Balkans... what is the name of country, Sarb... Sirb... Surbia or something...

DLH is afraid by proxy. They are afraid of Middle East Three + Turkish. Etihad is one of those three, from the country you will clearly have problems spelling out.

Amazing how people get so worked up about a deal, that in the greater scheme of things, is about as significant as a pimple on an elephant's backside. LH has for more important things to worry about than to think about what is happening in Serbia ... they already have relationships with Adria and Croatia - not to mention Swiss, Austrian and LH itself .... why worry about an additional headache such as JU ?? Please, get real and stop overplaying JU's importance in global aviation terms or the importance of Serbia as a market...

      Delete
    14. I don't think that anybody is suggesting that JU keeps them awake at nights. Even though they'll fight for every % of their business, Air Serbia is definitely not a big deal for them ATM. Where I think people here are coming from is that if in the future JU goes long haul (like they keep suggesting), LH for sure will react. Don’t forget that they make loads of $ on long haul and bleed on short-haul. That’s why they transferred all those hubs to Germanwings, to try to make it profitable with a different business model and cost structure.

The biggest issues for LH these days is (a)how to deal with TK and its enormous growth practically in LH’s backyard and (b) how they deal with big 3 while moving to Germanwings, cutting administrative cost (3000 jobs), new CEO etc. In my opinion they lost the TK battle already, we’ll see about the second one.

This link relates to BIRN report. Who are BIRN (Balkan investigating and reporting network)?

Just a useless bunch of parasites well paid by some EU bureaucrats. They pretend being fair and honest; however, I find them mostly with anti-Serb bias in whichever field being involved. (spinner of the worst kind)
It would be more interesting see their arrangements with their investors and their orders how to present things than to dig into Etihad's agreements.

BIRN does not provide info on how it’s financed so its neutrality should not be taken at face value. Unofficially they are aligned with EU interests.

Agreement documents provided on that site could not be authenticated nor verified as final. Provided documents might as well have been created or at least partially edited in Brussels. Site did not provide any information to the contrary.

EU Article 107 cited there does apply to Aid related to Member States, which Serbia is not at this point. State aid in this deal was already objected in the media by EU, so this revelation is in line with already known EU interests in this matter. Nothing new here.

    2. Cairo was one of the first destinations mentioned, but it was cancelled long ago, while it was still in the planning stage because of "unrest" and "instability". I wish Air Serbia launched it. Most of their destinations are in Western Europe. it would be nice to see them flying to Middle East and North Africa more.
