Alitalia to launch Zagreb and Pristina service

Alitalia announces Zagreb and Pristina launch

Alitalia has confirmed it will launch services to both Zagreb and Pristina this year as the Italian carrier looks to put greater emphasis on the Eastern European and Balkan markets. “The Balkans and Eastern Europe play an increasingly important and strategic role in the Alitalia Group’s new industrial plan”, the airline said in a statement. It adds, “Committed to meeting the demands of the ever growing business travel market between Italy and Eastern Europe and the Balkans, Alitalia intends to add new flights to Zagreb (Croatia) and Pristina (Kosovo)”. The news comes only a week after Etihad Regional cancelled its planned Rome - Zagreb service, which was to launch at the end of the month. The Abu Dhabi based Etihad is tipped to take over the debt ridden Italian national carrier soon.

Alitalia’s arrival into Zagreb will pose as direct competition to Croatia Airlines' service to the Italian capital which is operated via Split and Dubrovnik. With Belle Air Europe out of the picture following its bankruptcy late last year, Alitalia faces little competition on flights between Pristina and Italy. Within the former Yugoslavia this summer, Alitalia will launch daily flights to Skopje on May Day. “Flight schedules are designed to accommodate both business and leisure travellers including Macedonians living in Italy, with convenient connections from Macedonia to the rest of Alitalia's intercontinental and international network via the company’s Rome Fiumicino hub”, the airline says.

The Italian national carrier operated up to two daily flights to Zagreb prior to its financial problems in late 2008. It also ran seasonal summer flights to Dubrovnik and Split. Late last year the airline said it was considering launching services from Rome to Skopje, Pristina, Zagreb and Sarajevo, to be implemented between 2013 and 2016. Within the former Yugoslavia, Alitalia already operates flights to Belgrade and Podgorica.

Guys, if you really want to dedicate your lives to punctual recording of each and every JU flight with low LF or below the breakeven line, that is fine. Your life, your choice. But you may wish to pick time and place for your doomsday forecasts. Have you bothered to read at least the title of today's update? We have new routes opening and you again ring all the bells with JU's load factors. I mean they have their COO and CFO to worry about that. And for the rest of us, there are other things to read and learn except daily alerts on low LF. Yes, we all figured out is low. But it doesn't have to jump out of our fridges in the morning. Geez...

Ista aliance, slicne kompanije a logike nema.

Congratulations Alitalia .Once again Croatia Airlines proves once again that he has no idea what's he doing except fulling his personal pockets .Example. Keeping stations open that are not profitable and closing the profitable ones. In any other European countries this Ceo would have been fired .Or better they would have given him the chance to become Ceo .

I agree Kucko must go, any airline that leaves a third of its fleet standing idly on airport apron throughout the winter is not a competitive airline that is bound to loose money.

Kucko is responsible for OU's failings and must be held responsible for its failures. USKOK should take a look at OU's operations and Kucko must be replaced asp.

Etihad will not take over Alitalia. After they pump the money in (which will be burnt within a year or so) they will slowly start realizing what they got themselves into. Either way the routes to SKP, PRN and ZAG are policy of current management, not Etihad's.

    7. When it comes to Larnaca, Rome and Milan are extremely popular. It's common to see more than 10 passengers heading to each destination. Another very popular destination is Prague.

Talking of Milan, I think that's one of Air Serbia's most successful destinations when it comes to codeshare agreements. It's very common to see Alitalia business passengers onboard while at times there are 20 economy class passengers. I guess it's people who are continuing their journey with Alitalia.

Especially business passengers. For sure they will not use direct route, but connection with Air Serbia. For business passengers money is not object, they don’t care about few Euro discount, but time is. And that is why they regularly use Air Serbia, to spend less time with 1stop connection.

    9. But you cant just assume that business people will not connect in Belgade because to you that solution seems improbable.

Sometimes it is all about scheduling. In the past two years, when flying to London, on only one occasion I used JAT, on all others I was forced to go with Lufthansa. They were the only one allowing me to arrive to London for a meeting at 12:00 and return to Belgrade via Frankfurt later in the evening (luckily from LCY). JAT was always cheaper but never the option because of the inconvenient schedule, despite being nonstop in both directions and so much cheaper.

Zagreb numbers for February are up, a slight 1.5% growth on last year, but with fewer operations, Airport had 1249 flight operations or 66 less than same month last year but more pax carried indicating higher load factor.

Didn't expect much in February to be honest, all indications were airport would handle about the same or less pax this months cause of OU' has cut number of operations by 50%.

OU has less than 60% of all flight operations at Zagreb airport in January and February, same is expected in March. OU is expected to return to normal operations sometimes in July or August.

Airport management isn't happy with OUs performance and are have indicated that they'll allow low costs to come in if OU continue to under perform beyond June.

Talks with easyJet, and GermanWings over additional flights and new lines out of Zagreb have already started, with GermanWings adding Hamburg, with Potential of Düsseldorf being added this year.

Athletics – medals in World championships and Olympics (Blanka Vlašić, Sandra Perković, Branko Zorko)
Gymnastics – Olympics medal winners (Filip Ude)
Hockey – Medveščak is only team from exYU to play in KHL (Russian league)
Shooting – World and Olympic winners
Tennis – Davis cup winners, Wimbledon winners
Basketball – 4th in Europe, before 2nd in Europe
Ping-pong – one of the best in Europe, lot of medals
Taekwondo – winners of lot of medals in World championships
Karate – winners of lot of medals in World championships
Boxing – World and European champion (Stipe Drviš, Željko Mavrović, Mario Šivolija-Jelica)
