Belgrade, Zagreb and Sarajevo grow

Zagreb catches up to 2013 numbers as Belgrade and Sarajevo surge

The airports in Belgrade, Zagreb and Sarajevo have all recorded solid passenger growth in May, with the latter of the three ending its one month passenger slump. In May, Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport continued to see its numbers surge by handling 383.773 travellers, an increase of 27.5% compared to 2013. At the same time, the airport recorded a jump in the number of operated flights from 3.787 last year to 4.987 this May, or an increase of 31.7%. During the month, several airlines launched new flights from the airport with Air Serbia inaugurating services to Varna and Warsaw and resuming seasonal flights to Dubrovnik. Additionally, its charter brand Aviolet kicked off flights during the month while Etihad Regional launched services from Geneva. Overall, Belgrade Airport has handled 1.537.240 passengers in the first five months of the year, up 32.9% on the same period in 2013.

Zagreb Airport, which marked the start of construction of its new terminal in May, welcomed 217.775 passengers through its doors during the month, an increase of 5.9%. Similar to Belgrade, Croatia’s busiest airport saw an increase in the number of operated flights from 3.424 last May to 3.512 this year around, a 2.6% boost. During the month, Korean Air launched its seasonal summer charters from Seoul to Zagreb while KLM Cityhopper inaugurated daily services from Amsterdam. Zagreb Airport has now caught up to passenger numbers from 2013 following a lacklustre start to the year. It has seen 839.722 travellers pass through its doors so far in 2014, up 0.7%. Zagreb Airport is expected to surpass the one million passenger mark sometime in June.

Finally, Sarajevo Airport has overturned its slump from April and saw its numbers improve in May. The airport handled 71.513 passengers, an increase of 9.2% compared to the same month last year. The number of flights to and from Bosnia and Herzegovina’s busiest airport also surged as it saw 606 operations, up from 516 last year, or an increase of 17.4%. So far in 2014, Sarajevo Airport has handled 245.462 passengers, an increase of 6.3% compared to the same period last year. A large amount of humanitarian cargo was delivered to both Bosnia and Serbia during the flood crisis in the two countries this May, with the airports in Sarajevo and Belgrade recording a significant surge in handled cargo goods. Sarajevo Airport processed 302.543 kilograms of cargo, up 43%, while Belgrade processed 926.233 kilograms, up 54.5% on the same month last year.

As the only airport in Serbia all traffic goes through just one entry point Belgrade so you would expect traffic to continually grow. Zagreb being one of many international airports in Croatia doesn't have to grow as much as airports such as SPU, ZAD and DBV offer non stops to places such as MUC so traffic doesn't have to always go through ZAG. Howwver i'm sure ZAG will show strong summer growth non the less.

What will you do the day BEG reaches the combined passenger volume of all the Croatian airport (on the path to 5 million this year already)? I think if Zagreb was that interesting it would have at least the double of passengers from Pristina, which it clearly doesn't.

Zagreb is steadily growing, KLM numbers won't impact on May figures but it'll impact June and subsequent months. Arrival of other carriers should ensure better numbers at Zagreb in coming months.

Airport management must agree with easyJet some sort of a deal or EasyJet will leave Zagreb come November. Although EasyJet has only 4 weekly flights (~600 passengers per week, 2500 per months) its important alternative carrier to legacy carriers OU and BA.

Hopefully 2.5 million pax for 2014 is achieved opening good base for 2015.

Croatia's airports should do well this year.

      Zagreb: 2.5 million
      Split: 1.72 million
      Dubrovnik: 1.65 million
      Zadar: 550 000
      Pula: 425 000
      Osijek: 35 000

      Total: 6.88 million.

Last year, BEG had 3,5 mil. Air Serbia does have big increase in fruequencies, but with very bad LF's, the result of which will be less passenegrs than expected. Second biggest BEG operator, Wizz air, cut come destinations, and reduced frequencies on existing, which will also contribute to more modest growth than you expect. There are no much other carriers in BEG as well this year compared to the last, and all these indicates that BEG will not reach 4,5 mil. you talk about. Even if it does, form 4,5 to 7 mil is not less than 2, but 2 and a half mil difference, and 2 qnd a half million is approximatelly 60% of BEG traffic, which is, you want or not to admit, significant difference.

my bad, totally forgot, Rijeka, 175 000.

      OK again

      Zagreb: 2.5 million
      Split: 1.72 million
      Dubrovnik: 1.65 million
      Zadar: 550 000
      Pula: 425 000
      Rijeka: 175 000
      Osijek: 35 000

      Total: 7.055 million.

As to Brac and Losinj, not sure about these two, I think they're inoperable, no flights, unless someone bought these two airports in past 2 years.

in the past Brace had 52000 pax and Losinj around 8000, u can add these if you want to to a total number.

Talking about how many pax will BEG have, if Belgrade airport would have ZERO growth from now on, it is going to be 4 mil. So 4.5 mil is pretty realistic.

For the rest of the guys, BEG will never have more pax than all Croatian airports. It is not about who is more capable and not even who is richer and who has bigger purchasing power, it is about the nature of the economy in Serbia and Croatia. But for me, as a Serb, it is not even so important. If we have a variety of destinations like we do now, (unlike feeding Star Alliance hubs), it is enough for me...

    6. Anonymous14:27

Brac is operative. It has regular flights to Zag, and numerous charters to diffrent cities in Austria, operated by both Croatia and Tyrollean.

Losinj is operative as well, it's only problem is the lenght of runway, and it can't handle even bigger turboprops. But it has a lot of private flights, mostly from Germany, on Cessnas, Pipers and similars and those 8000 are that pasengers

      Delete
    7. Anonymous14:41

yes, best ever year was around 8000, and best ever year for brac airport was 52000 in 2007 or 8 I think.

your sentiments are good, but there are many angry Serbs here who express their anger with personal attacks on Croats and anything Croatian, has been going on for since blog's inception. I've only visited this blog since late 2012 and I've noticed loads of anger among Serbs for any progress in Croatia.

Croats are very critical of things in Croatia, for slow pace of reforms, or corruption, we voice is regularly here and we tend to be open about issues in Croatia, some Serbs take a liberty to a notch further and insult Croatia and Croats on this blog as if its only a Serb blog aimed at Serbs and no one else.

These few nationalist here and blog admin knows who they are from IP addresses, tend to create a major discord and ethnic divide that often works to galvanize Croats and others in their opinions of Serbs in general.

A few rotten apples make pie taste bad, ;)

Blog Admin should openly inform blog users when anonymous user is using nationalist and racist remarks, so we all know who is acting like a dick and we can all ignore these in future correspondence on this blog.

      Public shame works wonders ;)

      Just a suggestion.

On a daily basis I do delete many comments which go against the commenting guidelines but I cannot moderate 24/7. I have warned people many times, most recently only two days ago, that I will introduce a pre-approval policy for comments before they are published. The result of that will be a much less engaging discussion and tons of comments about censorship but I am left with no choice if this keeps up. Everyone can have different opinions no matter of their country or nationality but try to keep it civil and discuss aviation without the need to resort to slurs and insults. That goes for everyone.

      SPU ...
yes 5.9% shows that something is moving in the right direction because at least 40% of local ZAG passengers are seeking alternative in nearby airports due to policy of OU ( price and route )
Sustainable development depends mostly on OU in case of ZAG , and they are very passive because of LH and although in those conditions OU had to centralize all flights around ZAG especially during the winter (SPU and DBV just domestic plus FCO ) , summer is a different story.
Just comparing ZAG and BEG are wrong because the market conditions are not the same.Dispersed market and a centralized market is not a same business environment.
BEG has huge potential especially based on transit but my opinion is that OU not exploits local potential on right way (tourism and diaspora) where it could develop.

Purger, OU is loosing dominance at Zagreb, give a take few years it'll be a second fiddle to other players, not sure how much is to believe what Kucko the liar is saying, of OU's revival in 2015 with extra flights and 4 new aircraft, well new aircraft will be joining the fleet no matter what, they're paid for, so there's no alternative to that, but that being said, OU must go aggressively in to expansion in 2015 if it is to attract investors by mid to late 2016. I personally think we should wait with the privatization of OU but bring in experts from BA or Lufthansa, to run things, and I am not referring to alliance thing, totally independent with parliamentary oversight.

OU must expand fast, must maintain good routes year round with good service and reliability, Right now 3 A320s can be moved in to summer schedule to cover summer seasons with eventually 8A319s doing the scheduled service year round and 3A320 used only summer season months. Eventually after 2020 A320s will need to be replaced, ideally by a A319 or CS100s (Bombadier) to maintain two manufactures (two aircraft types).

OU could become a real player, but I don't see the region as place where OU can make its bucks, Ex-YU region is small and insignificant, there are loads of low cost operators coming in and only significant purchasing power in the region is in Croatia and Slovenia, small markets of 6.4 million, don't see much of the market here to be honest, only way is to either work with in EU market and try to play summer tourist season in conjunction of maintaining a strong Zagreb hub or try your luck in other markets, this is why the EU is really good place to be.

Can't wait for pre-approval policy for comments to be introduced. Discussion will get lot more engaging because a lot of people don't want to comment at all unless discussion is strictly aviation related. There are other places on the net for politics. When is new policy finally going to get implemented? Thank you Admin!

I am talking about eastern, south eastern and Mediterranean destinations. And year long ones.

Warsaw, Prague, Minsk, Sofia, Bucharest, Larnaca, Thessaloniki, Athens, Beirut, Cairo (it is said AirCairo will fly year long), Abu Dhabi...

Of course you have over who knows how many airlines. It is because OU sucks. And you do not have direct flights to a capital of the worlds biggest country, Moscow (whatever you think about russian policy, it does not matter). Then Aeroflot steps in.

Remember how JU pushed Air France out of the picture? And Air Serbia flies there with bottleneck full Airbuses. So you cannot say BEG did not have enough demand.

I also think OU doesn't fly to Stockholm, correct me if I am wrong.

The only important advantage ZAG ever had was Lisbon. Now, even that disappeared, when we have TAP.

So, do not get me wrong. I wish all the best for Croatian airports, I am trying to calm down both Serbs and Croats here. But I like to set facts straight as well. Ziveli.

No there isn't ElAl flies to Zagreb from April to late October twice weekly, this might change this or next year, we'll see, until its confirmed its not a full on service.

Zagreb has poor connections with the Mid east, only Turkish and Qatar fly to mideast, with Turkish being major player here, with 10 or 14 weekly flights. Qatar now introducing daily flights to Zagreb.

ElAl might start full on service next year or might not, but until they do, Zagreb is served only on ad hock seasonal basis.

I think someone posted this on this blog few days ago, which is good, especially for Connecting to Australia and NZ. Although I think Qatar Air is a very good at doing this and Qatari are trying to turn Doha in to next Dubai with brand new airport/terminal being constructed.

Arrival of FlyDubai is only a natural progression, only question is, are they coming with a wide body for distance exceeds certain limits, not sure if they can fly in with standard A319/B737 without impacting on crew rest issue. 4200km is a long way away, a nearly a 6 hour flight, I think they might fly to Frankfurt via Zagreb or something ,perhaps Berlin. Can't see them flying to Zagreb with a wide body 7 days a week, perhaps if they added Berlin,Amsterdam or Frankfurt would be more plausible. London might be a stretch cause there are 3 airlines on the route and OU would object to that route I'm sure of it.

I'd really like to see the following airlines come to Zagreb, full on service with at least 3 weekly flights to start with.

      Finnair, Airline of Finland
      SAS, Scandinavian
      LOT - Polish Airline
      Czech Airlines
      Brussels Air
Iberia - full on service 7 days a week, entire year.
Lingus - Irish, so we can visit Dublin every weekend.
Alitalia - Rome and Milan Service 21 times per week (they used to do twice daily service to Zagreb)
Olympic Air (at least twice weekly service or Agean)
Wizz air - as one alternative low cost operator (no chance of that happening with new hikes in airport tax)
Swiss international - 7 weekly flights to Zurich, everyone loves Swiss chocolates, and since half a million Croats go on skiing Holiday to Austria each year, would be nice to have alternatives to Austria, Switzerland and Southern France, right now driving to Switzerland can be a nightmare in winters.

Vueling - full on service to provide alternative to Iberia but also increase number of low cost operators,.
TuFly - again another low cost operator for very same reasons.
EasyJet to stay to provide alternative to BA and OU dominance on London Route.

For the others, I think Finnair, CSA and SAS might be expected soon, as well as Iberia making its seasonal flights year-round and increasing frequencies. I also think it's more likely to be Aegean than Olympic, but not that soon, or not at all, and for the others, I doubt, at least within next 3-4 years. On the other hand, I think it's not impossible that ZAG gets scheduled Far East flight(s)/operator

It was never an aircraft range issue but a crew exceeding flight and duty times issue. This has reportedly prevented them from launching Zagreb in the past. What has changed now if true, who knows but I guess Zagreb airport management has something to do with it.

Qatar airways and Doha at this time can't compete with Dubai and the network it has towards Australia and New Zealand through Emirates and Qantas. OU is so stupid for ignoring Dubai for so long. Its probably almost impossible to launch now.

It make no sense why OU is not in this market especially when many these people may have never considered the old school option of going via Asia. Its a new market creating its own passenger base.

OU to Dubai would only be adding to its passengers base not substituting one for the other.

The real question is, how easy is it now to launch flight to Dubai with trying to secure / paying for slots.

    SPU ...

    "
Finnair - no way ,just cost to catch Asians
SAS - no way , OU to CPH for transit through Scandinavia (LH problem)
LOT - no way ( LH problem)
Czech Airlines - no way they are lost,TVS did the job
Brussels Air -- no way, LH plus OU monopoly for politic-subventions
Iberia - OK ,service 4x week winter to MAD
AerLingus - no way , first SPU summer
    Alitalia - OK
Olympic Air - no way , OU in summer
Wizz air - perhaps although ?
Swiss - no way , OU and LH
Vueling - OK perhaps instead IB
    TuFly - no way
EasyJet - hmmmmm I am lost hehehhehe

    "

LH problem what is lh problem, sorry not familiar with the word, is it load factor?

finnair already flies to Croatia and does seasonal charters to Zagreb as does SAS and Swiss.

I'm trying to figure, are you saying that some airlines aren't allowed to fly to Zagreb cause OU/Alliance has monopoly there ?

U see I'd like to see that monopoly broken and invite other airlines in, I can see that some airlines dominate Zagreb but adding few new carriers is what Zagreb needs.

Finnair, SAS, Swiss, Brussels Air are just the kinds of airlines we need in Zagreb to compete on popular routes where OU dominates, and no flights to Helsinki, most northerly capitol in the EU, not most attractive place to visit, but has its charms also having finnair in Zagreb would encourage more business links between the two countries.

Yes I am for monopoly of Star Alliance hehheeh and I am more than happy when I need to pay 300 eur for the ticket or more ...
Yes LH is load factor hehehheh or Lufthansa and both dictate business policy
we are poooooooor people all ex-yu so please be realistic !
every company coming here is not because of us but to serve and protect the domestic economy and its position so if Swiss or Brussels or Aegean or LOT or SAS or anything which is connected with Star first must to get the blessing of the big mom .

Finnair is present only for transit and domestic summer market ( no diaspora no business to justify flight)
    British too
    Airfrance/ KLM too
    Aeroflot too
and they are very cooperative in sharing markets
and we are all a statistical minority that fills flights . ( croats living in Germany are part of the German economy and we have Germanwings in SPU through the winter )

So the rising star TK EY EK (FZ) et cetera are dangerous for EU big players and we all see how things are going in the case of TK in ZAG in BEG .

Old predators are already present new predators are coming so Alitalia yes (EY) Iberia or Vueling yes( BA-IB) and LCC yes ( they are special animals)

so we are to small my friend ! select predator and shut up (OU / LH and JU / EY) this is reality!
This business is very expensive business ,so LOT in
ZAG perhaps if LH gets something in return.

PS. OU je mozda mogla drugacije ali samo mozda uz veliku profesionalnost i etiku politike i struke al to je na balkanu utopija.

There's a massive demand for flights between Helsinki and Zagreb, as there is demand for Stockholm and Oslo with Zagreb, you're forgetting Zagreb is major business and commercial center of the region, with major investments from Finland, Sweden and Norway in Croatia, in particular in Zagreb.

Croatia isn't all tourism, and BA, AF and other major airlines are test to that fact, they have year long twice a day service to Zagreb from London, Paris, Frankfurt..

Also Zagreb is now run by the French, sure its owned by the Croatian State and City of Zagreb, but its been leased for 30 years to French consortium.

They'd be more included to invite anyone over and I see no problem with SAS, Finnair and other airlines coming to Zagreb, nothing to do with big moma, big moma is the EU and not OU.

Sure Zagreb will be dominated by the Star alliance members and there's little that can be done here, simply put Croatian market is in the EU, and major airlines of the EU are Lufthansa, BA, AF/KLM, SAS, Iberia and Alitalia.

If half of them are members of Star Alliance, its just how dice rolls, u got to accept it and move on.

More airlines means more passengers means more business means more money for everyone.

BTW last year Zagreb was visited by 877 000 tourist, hopefully this year 1 million visitors come to Zagreb, and having good air links help a great deal. So Zagreb needs SAS, Finnair, and all other airlines I've mentioned, more the merrier.

few capillary business travelers is not enough to justify such lines especially to the Finland and Norway (when we find oil and gas maybe)
Sweden has more potential but the Star policy is stronger .
"They'd be more included to invite anyone over and I see no problem with SAS, Finnair and other airlines coming to Zagreb, nothing to do with big moma, big moma is the EU and not OU."
hahhahah you made me happy , OU is nothing in this story ,EU so so but capital in the hands of LH and the French concessionaire is another story (did you notice reciprocity) yes ZAG have potential for all new and old predators but CSA,LOT,Finnair,Tarom ,Aegean needs strong economic reasons for maintaining year-round flights ,we are to small market for all of them .
MZLZ will maintain the dominance of LH and new and old predators plus LCC .

off course this is my opinion ;-)

ps. ko sretniji od mene da imamo razlicite prevoznike i jako konkurenciju kao LHR hehe

I think OU should compete with SAS and Norwegian on Stockholm and Oslo routes, at least in the season time. For example, on some days, Oslo - SPU up to 5 flights per day, they should be able to take a piece of cake from them indeed....
