CEO: Air Serbia on track to break even in 2014

Air Serbia anticipates improved financial results in 2014

The CEO of Air Serbia, Dane Kondić, says the airline is on track to break even in 2014 after the Serbian carrier posted a 73 million euro loss in 2013. “Air Serbia has built a solid foundation in the six months since it was launched and is on track to break even in 2014. The improved passenger numbers and revenue reflects the growing appeal of the airline for leisure and business travel across the Balkan region and beyond”, Mr. Kondić said. The statement comes after the Serbian carrier reported its quarterly results which show a 66% increase in total passenger numbers and a 47% increase in revenue compared to the same period last year.

“In addition to strong growth in passenger revenue, we are also growing very important cargo revenue, which provides more stability to the revenue base of the business”, Air Serbia’s CEO added. Cargo tonnage increased to 175 tons, up 46% on 2013. “The improved performance of Air Serbia shows our strategy to grow the business based on strong governance, a modern fleet, a growing and connected network, and a commitment to our guests to be the best, is working”, Mr Kondić said. He added, “Our focus is on providing value, convenience and comfort. We are listening to our guests about what they want and in doing so, we are steadily growing demand”.

The airline’s CEO noted that the Serbian government and Etihad Airways were supportive shareholders and partners. “The Serbian government is monitoring our progress closely and providing assistance and advice where needed and where appropriate. I have no doubt that we will be the leading airline in the region and our success will have a very positive impact on Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Airport, as it aims to become the region’s key air transport hub”, Mr. Kondić concluded. In a press release the carrier noted it had established commercial ticketing agreements with Etihad Regional, Jet Airways, Bulgaria Air, Ukraine International Airlines and STA Travel, the world’s largest travel company for students and young adults, in the first quarter. Furthermore, Air Serbia expanded codeshare agreements with Etihad Airways, Air Berlin, TAROM, Adria Airways and B&H Airlines during the first three months.

In a related development, Air Serbia’s minority shareholder is on the verge of finalising a partial takeover of Italy’s Alitalia. In a statement made yesterday, Etihad Airways CEO, James Hogan, said, “We are delighted to be able to move forward with this process and look forward to the successful conclusion of the proposed transaction with Alitalia. An equity investment in Alitalia will be beneficial not only for both airlines, but, more importantly, it will give more choice and broader travel opportunities to business and leisure travellers into and out of Italy”.

    Congratulation for Dalmatian starting operation today. As they, announced, first flight should be today. And they will have first flight on ghost plane, ghost airport, by ghost crew and with ghost passengers.

    And again nothing. That is not even wanabe company. That is parody of company. And it is not true that Dalmatian is Jatovanje. To make Jatovanje you have to do something not just dreaming.

      If glasovanje is OK than Jatovanje is more than OK. But for sure it has to sound Serbian, not Croatian. Because Jat was Serbian not Croatian company. And Jatovenje becomes wide used impression in several blogs and as far as I know it was find by guy from Aircroatia blog, not by Purger.

      But that is not point. Point is that Dalmatian did not have first flight today!

    Good thing JU has not become and won't become a mere feeder of Alitalia and Etihad, as someone assumed a couple of months ago.

    As for the profit stories, I am gonna see the results next year, these announcements still do not mean anything.

      JU isnt exactly a feeder, but not independant. In time to follow I see it more complementing the EY's euro carriers with more cooperation between them, offering more connections and frequencies via certain hubs. JU is not a major factor, nor is it minor as well. I think JU will be used to annoy OS and to a small extent TK.

      Its Serbia, in Serbia only positive news are published, the fact that airline is bleeding money left right and center is on track to bankruptcy or as Kondic put it, to brake even.

      U bring in KMPG or any other major accountancy firms to do do an overall audit of the airline, you'd find the real truth.

      Sadly, in Serbia bad news can be pushed under the rug, for someone else to pick up the tab, perhaps the next generation. No wonder, anyone smart with some education wants to leave the country on a first plane.

      What crap are you talking about ? The 2013 accounts were audited and signed off by E&Y International in accordance with IFRS - for the first time in the airline's history. The airline is already bankrupt how many times over, or didn't you read the news about its 2013 performance and accumulated losses of over EUR200m. Etihad doesn't do bankruptcy - it builds successful airlines ... You should instead be focused on OU and how the Grip Reaper is waiting at its door, watching it die slow and painful death

      There is a huge Serbian community in the UAE who use the AUH-BEG flights.

      As well, with EY when I few from AUH to BEG, Serbians seemed to be the minorities on the flight with more Asian travellers than Serbs. Also, Serbs were using the flights to connect to Asian holiday destinations such as Thailand and Indonesia. I think the main concern on the VIE-AUH route would be to OS and EK who fly to VIE. But sending HG isnt impressive as to EK who use their B77W to VIE.

      Also, AUH-VIE and AUH-BEG are different markets. AUH is lacking a direct flight to VIE which needs to open. EY have healthy loads to BEG with the flights always full.

      Serbians are not even numbered as minority in UEA, not even on those which are 0,1%. So, even if they are near to 0,1% that is some 6.000.

      Serbian tourists to Thailand, Indonesia? How many of them. 1.000 or 2.000 per year?

      So air company can have 14 frequencies per week on 5.000 Serbians in UEA + 2.000 tourists?

      Till yesterday you point that most of JU passengers are transit. Now, we have Aegean-Etihad code-share, Niki-Etihad code-share, Darwin-Etihad code share, Alitalia-Etihad code share. Will Montenegro passengers use AUH via BEG with JU, or via FCO with AL? And will VIE passengers use direct route or one via BEG? etc. etc.

      That 6.000 will travel between Serbia and the UAE a few times a year minimum. As well, there is travel not only from tourists between Serbia and the UAE, but Asia, and lets not forget those in Australia who go home (Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Bosnia) to visit family. Trade between Serbia and the UAE is growing, and many Serbian products will be found in supermarkets in the UAE, which means cargo.

      I didnt say most are transit, but there is a growing amount, but not a majority. All those airlines you mention serve different markets. Italian needs are different to those of the Serbian market etc. As for what pax will choose is up to them and their travel needs. JU has been for decades been in the UAE lets not forget.

      2 flights per day = 150.000 passengers per year just for break even. Now without Greeks (Aegena-Etinad deal), no Austrians (Niki-Etihad deal), no Swiss (Darwin-Etihad deal) and no Italians (Alitalia-Etihad deal) + Alitalia will take lot of JU passengers from ZAG, ZAD, SPU, DBV, SJJ, SKP, TGD, LJU, how can you make 150.000?

      You do realize that even before the Aegean, Niki or Darwin deals, these markets were extremely competitive with multiple daily flights to the Middle East? It's not like Air Serbia is seeing this competition there for the first time.
      Just because an airline enters a market it doesn't mean another (in this case JU) has to leave it.
      Like I said it already, let's first see the deal happen and only then talk about Alitalia's Balkan expansion and its consequences on Air Serbia.

      I guess you are right (as always) when it comes to predicting doom and gloom of Air Serbia's expansionism. After all, the markets you mentioned (Greece, Austria and Italy) are highly uncompetitive and as soon as one airline enters the market another is bound to leave it. ;)

      I guess if we follow your logic, Belgrade should lose most of its foreign carriers since 'we have our own deal now.'

      Pa kad tako dobro sve znas o avijaciji pitaj pilote da li LETE ili voze. Cak i da ne pitas pilote, VOZE se vozila i vozovi, a lete LETELICE. Avion nije vozilo nego letelica, dakle ne vozi se nego leti. Ali vidim da nije ovde u pitanju voznja i letenje nego ono J iz aviJona kao u PatriJoti. Pozdravi Acu Velikog i ostale ovdasnje botove

      @Anonymous June 2, 2014 at 7:05 PM while I understand the great animosity between different political options in Serbia and issues over freedom of speech in cyber space, this is not a place where payed commentators congregate from any political option as you suggest (starting with the fact that articles and the majority of discussion is in English which I doubt any “bots” could keep up with). So let’s try and keep the political part to a bare minimum and focus more on aviation.

      As for the rest of the discussion, it is completely unnecessary. The standard of “comments” has really begun scraping the bottom of the barrel and I am very much aware of that. Unfortunately, comments can’t be moderated 24/7 and under certain circumstances I am unable to read all the comments. I am trying to keep off having to approve comments before they are published as I do support differences of opinion and expression but I am really being left with no choice here and an overhaul of the comments section is coming since some can’t behave, be civilised to each other and respect different opinions without having to offend others.

      Before engaging in a uncvilised discussion or provocation, which usually centres around nationality, at least remember you are all aviation enthusiasts and leave it at that.

    All these stories about AlItalia, Etihad starting Rome flights, AirBerlin, flyNikki etc. are reality, fact of life and something to be expected. This is highly competitive business where it's all about taking punches and adjusting to them. For everything they've done some far, Air Serbia's management's true test is how they react to all these changes in next year, two three. And also, how long it takes them is also going to be an important factor because very often you have only a small window to do something.

    While this year started good for JU and peek of the summer season, i don't see how is further growth possible. For this to happen one of the following must realize: noticeable higher living standard in Serbia ( not likely in near future ), cheaper service ( not likely even more ) or greater demand for transit. Tourism in Serbia have minor role in it's economics. So after ending this fiscal year JU will enter in a stale. How will it manage to balance income and expenses is yet to be seen.

      JU is not exactly focusing on O&D travel rather as well to transit who will boost loads and yields to travel. As well as we can see, cargo has with pax numbers had a sharp increase which also increases profit. JU has room to grow more, not only with current destinations but also to new regions. MUC and TIA are next in line, as well as either MAD and/or BCN to follow as well. I would expect JU to stay all year daily to DBV and SPU, more frequencies to ZRH, SVO, LON (either more slots in LHR if possible or expanding into LGW), CDG and possible either DUS or TXL to further improve connections with AB. With EY going into AZ, a stronger alliance with AZ could mean even more frequencies to FCO, and possible to MXP. How JU will cooperate with F7 will be interesting to follow as well.

      no, daily DBV and SPU all year is not good. 3 to 4 times p/w is ok in winter. but even for that, i think that JU might need to utilize AT4 or simmilar aircraft

      O tome odlucuje Direktorat u skladu sa smernicama Zajednickih Evropskih Pravila. U nacelu, kao princip od kog se retko odstupa, pilot moze leteti SAMO JEDAN tip aviona. Ovo se moze prosiriti na vise varijanti ili izvedenica od tipa aviona i naziva se "kros kru kvalifikejšn", pa tako isti pilot moze kao jedan tip aviona leteti porodicu "malih" Erbasa, odnosno 330, ili npr. porodicu Boinga 757/767, ili vise variajnti/serija 737. Koliko je meni poznato, nema drzave koja kao pravilo odobrava pilotu da istovremeno leti na B737 i A319/320

      Nisu jos uvek svi presli na a319/320, jedna grupa je na obuci, dok jedan broj njih leti sa instruktorima jos neko vreme.
      Onaj koji leti airbus -leti samo airbus, i obratno.

    SRBIJA NEMA DEŽURNU PARU. Svi Migovi 21 i 29 nisu u letnom stanju.

    U mirnodopskim uslovima efektivna kontrola vazdušnog prostora od strane vojske ključna je kako za aviokompanije, tako i za nacionlnog provajdera kontrole letenja. Ukoliko država (vojska) nije u mogućnosti da pruži lovačku zaštitu svog neba posledice (ne)korišćenja tog neba od strane inostranih aviokompanija, u vidu njegovog zaobilaženja zbog nedostatka bezbednosti, mogu biti katastrofalne.

      Da li si siguran da Srbija nema dezurne avione?

      Kad su 12 mig 21a HRZa bili u Ukrajni, (5 ih jos tamo), HRZ je imala 3 Mig 21a na dezurstvu, da HRZ ih ima 15, ali ih treba samo 12, 3 su u reservnom statusu.

      Ja sam mislio da Srbija ima 4 Mig 29 i 20ak Mig 21.
      Kaj se desilo sa svim tim avionima, par kaj sviih 24ak aviona su u tako losem stanju?

    Extending a big F**K YOU to the LH group who have once again cancelled a flight and left me at the last minute stranded to finding alternatives.

    LH left me stuck in SPU, leaving me a few hours to find an alternative last year. This was due to their strikes. Today OS cancelled my flight from DXB because there is "no crew available to operate the flight". Not only is there no crew for today, but tomorrow as well which is set to be cancelled as well. Funny enough, OS sent me an e-mail saying that I am ready to check in, yet it was only when I went to check the aircraft theyre sending to DXB on flightradar24.com is when I noticed there was no flight!

    Seriously, cancellation due to there not being enough crew to operate a scheduled flight which has for years been the same one in the system? A round of apploause to this 'professionalism'!!! LH could of subbed an aircraft for their partner airline just like EY atleast does for JU!

      Hahahaha spot on. As you mentioned Star Alliance, TK were trying to convince me that my ticket confirmation sent by TK itself was wrong, and that my date of travel was for the next day according to their system! But the gentleman at the TK transfer desk in IST was being generous to the point on "doing me a favour" by issuing me a boarding pass for the flight I booked and payed for! I guess with TK is that you book for one day, travel another. A family going for the Hajj in JED travelling TK business class also had issues when told they can not get on a flight for some reason, but will only be rebooked for a few days later, leaving them away from their Hajj pilgrimage for a few days. Yes you are Turkish Airlines, but globally yours? Ataturk Airport comes close enough!

      JU is not the worlds best nor is the worlds worst. I dont remember even Jat Airways cancelling a flight due to a lack of crew. JU will delay, have an RTF, replace the aircraft, delay more, bus you to an alternate to fly from, but there is alot of factors that will force them to cancel, same for Jat Airways. But they will get you there. As for OS, for the next 2 days, they will not send an aircraft to DXB, which btw is a daily flight. I have flown JU many times, as well as LH group, and I find JU more reliable. JU has never cancelled a flight on any of my sectors, late maybe a couple of times, but never cancelled and never left me to fetch for new flights. Maybe just luck?

      I have a lot of possitive words for the people in BEG as well as in JU who made me feel as if I was a part of their family! Same goes for OU and the great staff in SPU. Theyre not bad people, theyre mentally raped by the idiots who employ them, who on top of that delay their pay for months on end, who leave them to be attacked constantly by media. Its called empathy, show it and it works wonders.

      To avoid problem with terminal jams JU should develop downtown check in which could allow their pax to drop their baggage and get boarding passes in the ticket offices in Tašmajdan and Novi Beograd up to one day prior the day of flight, that would contribute much to easing on impeding terminal jams at BEG.

      Air Serbia je 1. decembra prošle godine otvorila redovnu liniju za Banja Luku, ali ona ne beleži zadovoljavajuće rezultate. U proseku na svakom letu između dva grada bude 20-tak putnika od 66 slobodnih mesta (ATR 72) što je nedovoljno da bi linija bila isplativa i da bi na duže staze opstala. Ovaj let omogućava putnicima iz Banja Luke da preko Beograda putuju do velikog broja destinacija Air Serbije po povoljnim cenama, ali ni to nije bilo dovoljno da privuče putnike.

      Air Serbia od početka ove linije održava svakodnevne letove ka Banja Luci, a osim niže cene u razmatranju je i smanjenje broja letova. Kako Aviokarta.net saznaje ne postoji namera da se linija ugasi, ali ove pokušaje da se privuku putnici treba shvatiti kao poslednje.
