Air Serbia forecasts million euro profit in 2014

Air Serbia expects 2014 profit and flights to Zagreb and Pristina

The Serbian national carrier anticipates recording a profit of at least one million euros at the end of this year according to the President of its Supervisory Board, Siniša Mali. With the airline’s first anniversary fast approaching, Mr. Mali, who is also the Mayor of Belgrade, told the "Elevate" magazine, “Last year was the most successful in the history of Air Serbia, including its predecessor Jat. In just one week in August an absolute record in the number of bookings in Jat’s history was set. We are following this trend from month to month”. He adds, “Compared to previous years the number of passengers has risen by 82%, with ten new aircraft joining the fleet. Air Serbia is on the right track to recovery. This year we expect to generate a profit of at least one million euros. As James Hogan, Etihad President and CEO, said, this will be the biggest consolidation to have occurred at any European airline”.

The President of the Supervisory Board notes that Air Serbia has transformed itself over the past year in terms of service, its route network and quality and that it “is a completely new company which was not long ago on the verge of bankruptcy”. “We as a country have shown that we cannot run a national airline of our own. Our goal is to eventually fly twice daily to all cities in the region but before we do that we need to connect the last two cities in the former Yugoslavia that we do not fly to yet - Zagreb and Pristina”, Mr. Mali concludes.

The last commercial service between Belgrade and Zagreb operated 23 years ago when Yugoslavia was still, officially, a unified country. Flights between Belgrade and Pristina last operated fifteen years ago. Start-up Air Croatia recently announced its intention to launch flights between the Croatian and Serbian capitals from Easter next year. Meanwhile, authorities from Belgrade and Pristina reached a free movement agreement in September, clearing an important hurdle for potential flights between the two cities. This allows Kosovo citizens to transfer through Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport using documents issued by Kosovan authorities. Although Serbia does not recognise Kosovan passports, they can be used at several designated border crossing and from now on at Belgrade Airport as well. Kosovo citizens can now travel via Belgrade Airport to third countries where their travel documents are recognised by local authorities.

  3. If Air Serbia were to fly to PRN then this would imply that the restriction for airlines that fly to/from Kosovo not to use the Serbian airspace will be lifted. This would be a positive development. Most PRN flights would be shortened by approximately 15 minutes and the cost of flying would be reduced too.

Also, I would have asked JA to operate the flight to PRN because they have the right aircraft type and to avoid sensitivities.

    1. JATBEGMEL09:57

JU has an ATR just like JA does. Many in Kosovo have Serbian passports and Serbian documents, ID cards etc, I dont see the reason why JU should get JA to send an aircraft on their behalf to avoid sensitivities. There was a big discussion here last year on that very topic yet so far we've seen huge growth, especially in the region. But I have to agree with you that it would be a positive development.

I dont see that airlines will bring down air tickets because they will burn less fuel using Serbian air space, but because JU would definitely do some price dumping to encourage people in Pristina to try out Air Serbia, and that this will probably get a couple airlines to also reduce fares to compete (JP and OS).

      Delete
    2. Anonymous09:58

All sensitivities woyld evaporate the moment cheap fares would go on the market.

      Delete
    3. Greetings JATBEGMEL, it's good to hear from you :)

I am glad we agree that it would be a good development if the air space restriction is lifted. Good for JU to be able to fly to PRN and good for PRN pax because of shorter flying times.
Now, I have had discussions with representatives of at least two airlines with significant traffic at PRN and was told that most likely fares would go down, nominally. Even if it's cents, it's positive. Needless to say, these are commercial decisions and any discussion about changes to fares is pure speculation.

Finally, I would say that even by Balkans standards our relations are sensitive. So, since JA is cooperating with JU and there is a well-established fleet shortage at JU then it would make sense due to (1) sensitivities, and (2) fleet shortage to consider hiring JA to operate this particular line. Unless you have zero belief in marketing (and everything comes down to the cost) then surely for PR purposes JA would be a better brand/face for JU at PRN. Unless of course, JU is targeting non-Kosovar pax who could not care less.

      Anyhow, I hope this materialises.

Im still skeptical prices will drop because of the lower fuel burn using Serbian airspace. I think competition will bring down the price. A good example would be BEG-VIE route whilst Niki was operating to BEG.

Either way, who ever operates with what ever aircraft, Im sure it will do well and hope it strengthens the ties and trust between 2 sides. A positive step and I wish it well once it launches :)

Those with those papers have so far been able to use two border crossings, one leading to Hungary and the other to Croatia, and now they will be able to use those IDs, "and not the passports of some self-proclaimed country of Kosovo," to cross the border at a number of other places as well, he (Marko Đurić, head of the Serbian government for Kosovo) noted.

It would be great to see ZAG and PRN open. Its disappointing to see SPU and DBV remaining seasonal after seeing a big increase in flights this summer. I dont think that after opening ZAG and PRN the regional expansion would be over, OHD, INI and OMO come in mind as other cities to be launched.

Regarding profitability, I am surprised it will technically be profitable for the first time in several years, however lets see how profitable it will be when the subsidies stop and the airline finally stands on its feet.

Sure, construction of Vucic's most beloved playground must be concluded "successfully". Therefore Aerodrom Beograd and NIS will absorb the losses, because of 50% discount on fuel and up to 100% discount on ground services. When you criticize this business model forum members attack you that JAT was on the brink of bankruptcy and this was the only solution. Sure- true JAT was almost bankrupt, but why should the tax payer now absorb through AB and NIS the substantial losses of AS? Another way was also possible. Just look east, to a country of similar size and population: Bulgaria Air is a private non-allied niche carrier with 12 modern aircraft, privately owned, profitable and with Bulgarian management! So, now tell me why, we Serbs were not able to copy that model?

    - 50% discount on NIS for petrol
    - 60 million EUR for fleet and other costs in just first year
    - 15 million EUR subsidies from Serbia
    - 30 million EUR debts in 2013 from which they finance some costs from 2014 in advance
    - 0 debts because all debts were transfer to Serbia

    1. On that way even idiot can make profitable company.
    2. That is much more money Serbia every gave to Jat. So, Air Serbia eats several times more money from tax payers than Jat was.
    3. For 90% of Serbian citizens to invest part of that money into roads and railway should make much more benefit that to invest in company that can use just 10% of reach passengers, mostly from Belgrade.

I understand your suffer, pain, bitterness and hatred and I honestly sympathise with you. Unfortunately I have even more bad news:
      1. Your endless list of millions and billions is very much incorrect and indicates you never bothered to read the agreement between Serbia and Etihad.
      2. Air Serbia will not ground its fleet next morning to ease your suffer. I am afraid they intend to keep on flying.

I hope you will get by somehow. Good luck.

    3. Anonymous13:02

I read agreement for very first to very last word. Did you? If you think those numbers are not right, please be free to write good numbers. But most of this (what I wrote) we did read on this blog. Almost all of those numbers. And those were just numbers for 2014. Till 2016. Serbia must invest several dozen millions more.

I did not say that Air Serbia will ground it’s flee tomorrow. It will not.

I also did not say that it is not good to give money to national airliner. That good for country. Air traffic is important and should be subsidised in every country. But it has to be real, concerning possibilities of the country, goal and benefits, and what priority counrty has. And Serbia with low standard in health, education and mass-transportation (terrible roads and horrible railway)… for sure cannot afford that amount of money. To give that huge amount of money is stupid. Benefit is not even near to investment.

But, what I want to say is that one has to be honest to your citizen and to say:
      1. We spend a huge amount of money. The reason for that is:…
      2. Air Serbia is not profitable, but it gets lot of benefits and subsidies. Without that Air Serbia would have several million debts in 2014.

The reson why I will not interpret the agreement for you is simple: even if I wrote the correct numbers a thousand times, you would still keep on pasting the same list of millions and billions where hardly a single item has anything to do with reality.

I can give you one hint though: next time you want to copy/paste the famous '50% NIS fuel discount', you may wish to ask someone from the industry to explain you what 'into plane differential' means and why it should not be mistaken for the fuel price.

Many of the remaining millions and billions rely on the same logic: 'It doesn't matter these numbers are total misinterpretation and manipulatoin - just keep on pasting them until your keyboard falls apart and the public will buy them'.

Attack on Air Serbia are as much political as it was the deal that created it. There may be some 10% of materially correct arguments in it, the remaining is pure politics.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous15:12

I really don't understand what „plane differential“ has to do with NIS 50% discount what is in agreement. Agreement specifically defined that Republic of Serbia will secure 50% discount on NIS petrol.

Maybe 50% discount in BEG, and 100% on lot of services also is related with „into plane differential“?

No, you did not write here different numbers, not even once, and for sure not 1000 times. I am here every day several times, and not a once noone print any number at all, exempt that guy from Croatia who quote agreement, and ExYu who wrote most of those numbers.

Usually when someone does not have argument, just write „you are not right“ and in Serbia it is always „politics reasons“. Well, I don't have any political influence, don't work in any political party, don't support any political party, I am even not near to Serbia. If you have any argument you will put exact numbers and quote source. Till than your note does not have any power at all. Perhaps you work for P.M. as his word in enough, without any numbers, facts or data. Like when he said that Air Serbia is bigger than all other exYu airliners together. Without any data. Just like you…

      Delete
    7. Anonymous15:26

You fail to recognize that discounts are alternate way for GoS to pay portion of JAT's old debt. That past debt is not responsibility of current Air Serbia management or investors.

      Delete
    8. JATBEGMEL16:50

100% ground service discount is because Air Serbia has its own ground handling staff. Why should Air Serbia pay the airport something it does itself?

Nobody also mentions the amount of new people who were employed, payed in Serbia, paying Serbian taxes, who contribute to the Serbian economy spending their salary where again? In Serbia. 2 years of subsidies is ok as long as the airline continues to grow, and grow it will. Air Serbia just finished a round of employing 50 new pilots and more ground staff positions were opened, soon a new lounge will open with more positions, as well as more people hired in catering, more people for the luggage sorting etc, which again Serbs were being hired. We did have JAT who did take millions of euros annually from our budget, with no benefits other than being a haven for relatives of our respective ministers. Air Serbia is receiving money from the budget, but it is also contributing indirectly to it as well. Look at the wider picture.

      @ 3:12 PM:

      When you say:

"I really don't understand what „plane differential“ has to do with NIS 50% discount what is in agreement"
      and
"Agreement specifically defined that Republic of Serbia will secure 50% discount on NIS petrol"

... what you actually say is:

"I hereby confirm that I never bothered to read the agreement (at least not the English version - which is the only one that applies) but regardless of that I will continue repeating that Air Serbia received 50% discount on the fuel purchase price. I don't care if the agreement never mentiones anything except into-plane differential, and I will not bother to learn what into-plane differential is, life is much more fun if I interpret it as 50% retail discount and then c/p it on this blog on daily basis."

This is why it makes absolutely no sense to try and explain you the remaining numbers. Your starting position is always the same: the agreement does not contain what it contains; it contains what you say it contains. And that is of course millions and billions of state aid. You don't want to read the contract, you don't understand event those parts that you may have read, you don't want to learn what you don't understand, you prefer to give it your own free interpretation and then fire at will. Why disturbing you with any reality then?

Belgrade is what is called a "Primate City". Primate cities are very common around the world, the majority of countries have them. Of course you mention Pyongyang because you want to show that Serbia is backwards in your mind, but Copenhagen, Budapest, and Amsterdam are all major primate cities with transportation networks built around them.

Grad Beograd i Beogradjani?

Da ne brines da je Er Srbija 'Air Belgrade', uskoro se otvara direktne veze sa PRN.

I am the only one to note how profitability for Air Serbia was NOT one of the original goals for the first year of operations and has recently floated to the top of the list? No common sense airline investor would require first year operations to be profitable, so what's the rush?

One explanation would be domestic political marketing, but that does not sound convincing.

Another explanation for sudden need for profitability could be demonstration of new management's solid business acumen and business goals to silence the critics who claimed "Air Serbia was set up as a puppet venture by foreign government to operate at a loss just to funnel passengers to UAE and take market share from our big, shiny EU airlines, so EC should be used to block Air Serbia". This one sounds plausible, right?

Domestic PR is the only reason. The amount of hatred towards the airline is so tremendous, it would explode like a volcano if they published losses at the end of the year. The hate campaign would be unbelievable. So they used all possible tricks to somehow reach positive balance sheet.

      Politics...

      Delete
    2. Anonymous20:24

I hope it is not for PR. Business should be executed according to the plan, not to score PR points. It is nice to go above the plan, but only a bit. If EC already gave Air Serbia a green light, I would agree with PR explanation, but second explanation is still a possibility.

Anyway, being unexpectedly profitable is really a nice problem to have :)

Airline is not hated by ordinary people. They like it better than old JAT.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous05:55

Yes but ordinary people still read the news and media outlets. And this is where some people who seriously hate the airline are waiting for any opportunity to unleash their anger. Needless to say these guys have no clue about the airline business but they are great in creating flammable political pamflets.

a zasto je sinisa mali the president of supervisory board of ju? jel on to mnogo pametan pa ne postoji niko ko bi bolje od njega radio taj posao, medju 7 miliona ljudi u srbiji, ili je dobio i taj posao preko veze, dok mladi sa zavrsenim saobracajnim fakultetom (prosek veci od 9,5) sede u kuci bez posla? zaista mi nije jasno kako neki milioneri imaju po 5 poslova, a ljudi sa diplomama niti jedan?

  19. Just FYI, supervisory boards at least in western world, have very specific function. They meet handful of times a year, deal with strategic matters and are usually staffed by former politicians, high ranking business man from other fields etc. etc. They are paid very well and usually have several of those in their portfolio. Most of the time you are paying for their strategic thinking but also their connections (Surprised that "veze" play a role in other countries as well!!!) Trust me, this comes from a guy who deals with such board all the time, your 9.5 GPA student wouldn't know what to do there. He is much better suited for a career in operations.

    4. He is a prime example of a polititian who you'd want to have on your board if you are a CEO of Air Serbia. Somebody who is very very close to the current political establishment. If you need the bilateral agreement with Turkey enforced you don't have to lobby the government all you need to do is talk to your board and it's going to happend.

I know why you guys are sick of this. Usually boards are a way to reward loyal political friends in Balkans. The problem definitely becomes when ALL the board members are polititians. In the case of AS it might not be such a problem becouse I'm sure Etihad's people on the board know a thing or two about the subject. All I'm saying is that I care llt more who leads the company on a day to day basis.

I think BEG should finally get a new terminal or maybe some development on his existing terminals. All those delays are showing that airport is a little bit too cluttered... I mean I know that there is a capacity of 5000000 pax per year, but maybe the airport is to unorganised...

As someone who works for JU I can explain the meal part. It is true CDG is no longer served hot males. Since the flight is under 2 hours a hot meal service is not planned anyway but it was decided for hot meals to be served here anyway. The problem was that crew didn't have enough time to serve the meals. Hot meals have to be heated. By the time that happens and they start serving they don't have enough time to collect all the meals when passengers are finished because there is not enough time since CDG is always packed with passengers especially with A320 being frequently used. That is why there is no longer hot meals on CDG route.
