Edelweiss Air launching flights to Banja Luka and Podgorica next summer

The Swiss-based Edelweiss Air will inaugurate flights from Zurich to Banja Luka and Podgorica next summer season and add additional frequencies to its existing services in the former Yugoslavia. Flights to Banja Luka will be launched on July 3 while services to the Montenegrin capital will be inaugurated on July 5. Both will operate twice per week with an Airbus A320. Edelweiss is a wholly owned subsidiary of Swiss International Air Lines and, apart from inter-European services, operates long haul flights to Canada, the US, Japan and Thailand as well. Edelweiss has a notable presence in the former Yugoslavia with flights to Skopje and Pristina, as well as seasonal services to Split.

In a statement, the airline said, “With the 2015 summer timetable, Edelweiss is also expanding its offer to include the up-and-coming cities in Southeast Europe. To that end, new destinations such as Banja Luka and Podgorica are being included in the route network and the number of flights to Pristina, Skopje and Split are being increased. The wider choice of flights affords Edelweiss customers even greater flexibility and individuality in their holiday planning”. Flights to Banja Luka and Podgorica will operate on a seasonal summer basis until October 24, 2015. Tickets are already on sale through the airline’s website.

Edelweiss will be warmly welcomed in Banja Luka which has struggled to attract customers in recent years. The new service will provide direct competition to B&H Airlines and will go head-to-head against the Bosnian carrier which has been flying from Banja Luka to Zurich for several years with an ATR72. Over in Podgorica, Edelweiss will compete against Montenegro Airlines on the route. Services to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s second largest city will operate every Monday and Friday, while flights to Podgorica will run on Wednesdays and Sundays. Further details for the Banja Luka flights can be found here, while additional information on the Podgorica service can be found here.

Great news for BNX and TGD! No more monopoly. Ok so now we know Edelweiss is not coming to Nis. They would have anounced it now.

Now that you mention INI, it very well could be Skywork that has expressed interest to fly there. Yesterday's article on the left reminded me of them and I remember they gave some announcement 2 years ago how they would consider INI.

Anyway great news for Podgorica and B. Luka

Very bad news for B&H Airlines. After Istanbul, this is the next route they will loose out. I did a quick search of the prices and BH is a bit cheaper but it is between an A320 and an ATR72.

I think that more important news is Split-Munich winter route (Lufthansa) and summer route Split-London Heathrow (British Airways)!

Yes, because news from Croatia is rarely reported here which is why there was Croatian related news only two days ago, which is why developments at Split, Dubrovnik and Zagreb airports are reported each month and which is why there are over 650 articles concerning Croatia and because it is so rarely reported that is why all new route launches for 2015 for Croatia have already been published and listed on the right hand side. No need for such comments. All news will be published. Today's news encompasses two countries which is why it was published today. The routes you are referring to will be published in the following days. If you have problems with the editorial policy and the scheduling of articles, you can report your concerns to exyuaviation@mail.com.

What's with you people and the verb "hate", some of you use it all the time, you know, usually when you have nothing to say-"haters gonna hate", it's getting boring, honestly!

Edelweiss is an excellent airline. Great crew, good ticket prices, full service with an actual meal tray on short haul European flights. Nice to see them around. Swiss often sends them to Belgrade.

I flew with them on route BEG - ZRH , and I claim that this is a very good airline, with service which is not much different than Swiss's .

I agree. no way BLX can feed 320, even to ZRH, and even with low prices, except for maybie s peak season summer months and Christmass, which is surely not enough for the service to be profitable. I expect Edelweiss to withdraw soon from BNX. And frankly speaking no clue about TGD market, so won't be commenting it.

This is OT but I have to respond to a comment from yesterday's news where someone wrote how Germany is now investigating Etihad's shares in Air Berlin. This actually couldn't be further from the truth. German authorities said they are only reviewing a set of new codeshare agreements between Air Berlin and Etihad not Etihad's shareholding in Air Berlin which was approved years ago. So I am sorry to disappoint the haters.

I really hope flights from Banja Luka will stay during the winter. B&H with a turboprop is a nightmare and with them you never know whether there flights will be grounded or not. With Edelweiss we will get good service and a chance to connect on Swiss flights.

Hopefully Montenegro Airlines reduces those horribly expensive tickets to ZRH now. I like nothing more then to see overpriced airlines offering basic service loose the monopoly under their feet.
