Air Serbia to launch Zagreb flights

Flights between Belgrade and Zagreb to resume after more than 23 years

Air Serbia has announced the launch of a double daily service between Belgrade and Zagreb from December 12. The new flights mark the resumption of commercial traffic between these two cities following a 23-year hiatus. The Serbian carrier will operate both a morning and afternoon departure from Belgrade to the Croatian capital, primarily targeting transit passengers who will continue their journey onwards from its hub. In a statement, the airline says, “The new service will offer business travellers excellent connections through Air Serbia’s Belgrade hub at Nikola Tesla International Airport to popular destinations across the airline’s network including Athens, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Thessaloniki, Tel Aviv, Moscow and Larnaca, and key destinations across the Balkan region including Skopje, Tirana, Sofia, Bucharest, Tivat, Podgorica and Sarajevo”. Both flights will operate with a 66-seat ATR72 aircraft.

Air Serbia faces no direct competition on the route. The airline has been expanding aggressively throughout the region with the recent launch of flights to Tirana, as well as an upcoming frequency boost to Ljubljana and capacity increase to Podgorica starting December. Commenting on the new route launch, Air Serbia’s CEO, Dane Kondić, said, “The introduction of services to Zagreb is a significant and welcome addition to the airline’s rapidly growing network. The flights will meet the growing demand of business and leisure travellers regularly commuting between these two capitals and will save them considerable time in comparison to travel by train or car”. He added, “The new service will also provide two-way connections over Belgrade between Croatia, mainland Europe and key global destinations”. Recently, Air Serbia’s Chariman, Siniša Mali, said, “Our goal is to eventually fly twice daily to all cities in the region but before we do that we need to connect the last two cities in the former Yugoslavia that we do not fly to yet - Zagreb and Pristina”. From December the airline will already offer double daily flights to Ljubljana, Podgorica and Zagreb.

The new service marks a major milstone in the former Yugoslavia as its two largest cities will once again be served by commercial flights - the first since the dissolution of the federation. The last scheduled flight between Zagreb and Belgrade was operated by JAT Yugoslav Airlines on August 6, 1991. The route enjoys a long history with JAT’s predecessor, Aeroput, maintaining flights between the two cities since February 1928. With the introduction of this new service, Air Serbia will now have a considerable presence in Croatia. Apart from Zagreb, the airline will also operate seasonal flights to Dubrovnik, Split and Pula, all of which are set to see frequency upgrades this summer. Their resumption will be brought forward to the very start of the 2015 summer season in late March. In its last year of normal operations, Yugoslav Airlines was already recording a significant drop in passenger numbers across its domestic network. However, in 1990 JAT carried 340.000 passengers between Serbia and Croatia. Travel between the two republics accounted for 34% of all domestic air travel.

Flight details for the new Belgrade – Zagreb service can be found here.

Ex-YU, you also forgot to mention that Banja Luka will be getting an additional frequency on Saturdays starting from 04.04.2015. :)

All in all, it's nice to see all this regional expansion. I am sure that Air Serbia will have no problem selling these seats.

What I am wondering is when does BEG plan on fixing the A6-A10 gates? They are horrible and really need fixing. I hope they finish it before March otherwise we are going to have chaos at the airport.

Well, Croatia Airlines' time is running out. Another thing more dangerous than Air Serbia is Air Croatia. Though their chances of survival are slim, if they take off they will give OU a rather big financial blow as they will trash the yields and take away some passengers. Let's hope for the best... but things are not looking up for OU.

Just from what you have it sounds like Jat wanted to renegotiate the terms of the code share agreement. How is that trying to rip LH off?

Anyway, AS is in a much stronger position today and would for sure not settle for the terms of that deal today.

You are just forgetting one thing. JU-LH agreement was a fair one and both parties were actually making money. The previous, incompetent management wanted to maximize their income/profits by considerably increasing the JU sector prices and by pushing for LH to reduce their own fares. They were morons and the loss of the interline/code-share actually cost JU a lot back then. LH was not at fault there, it was all because of the politically appointed morons.

Why don't they upgrade the route to an A319. There surely gotta be enough passengers between the two Star Alliance hubs. Air Serbia sends its A319 there and the flight is one hour and fifty minutes. From Zagreb it would not be more than one and a half hours for sure.

In all honesty i don't see how there'll be much business for JAT/AS in Zagreb, its good they've come, and its good they've got double daily, I just don't see them getting any transfers from Zagreb, mostly Croatian Serbs who might wish to visit their relatives in Serbia or Belgrade.

Zagreb is already well connected with Istanbul, Athens, Middle East, even better soon now that Aegean and Fly Dubai are coming to Zagreb. Most Croats fly to western destinations, EU wide, they have relative good choice of Airlines and decent prices too, only pity is that EasyJet has left Zagreb for now, they'll return I am sure of it, Zagreb is growing as an important travel destination and is very likely to become very popular as a city brake destination with in the EU, like Vienna, Munich or Prague are, given enough time. Zagreb is most visited capitol city in ex-YU, with biggest number of overnight stays and visitors, now passing one million mark in visitors numbers and 1.7 million overnights.

As to OU and Kucko, he'll be out soon enough, we had enough of him and his thievery, I am sure USKOK is looking at his operations, all state firms in Croatia are being looked at closely as a result of strict rules placed by the EU, and new laws being implemented. Only the other day USKOK made criminal charges against 220 workers at Zagreb Town Hall, all of them who gained their employment status through illegitimate ways, and couldn't provide evidence for their education. This isn't a lot considering Town Hall employs 8000 staff, but UKOK just started to look, they've estimated that at least 20% of all staff working for city of Zagreb's 8000 strong workforce are illegals or without proper qualifications. it is estimated that some 60 000 employees in Croatian government gained their jobs through illegitimate means and ways,i can tell you this, all of them will face prosecution once each government agency and ministry comes under scrutiny.

I think you are in a state of psychosis if you state that Zagreb is well connected with Athens. For the love of God, ZAG lacks a non stop flight to Rome!! The airport has pathetic links with the Middle East and the Balkan countries. I for one am happy about Air Serbia and I sure they will do just fine.

not sure how to respond to this other than cite someone from SSC forum who put it exactly how most Croats feel about flying with AS.

Hvala @

OU is in no danger of AS taking its share on any route, even if tickets were free, most Croats wouldn't fly with AS for the above reasons, Zagreb is served by many airliners, offering great deals on many routes, why would anyone fly with what is the worst airline in the region, to Western Europe is beyond me, even to mid East there's a plethora of airlines offering good flights.

AS's only traffic will be few business travelers and Croatian Serbs that have homes in Croatia and Serbia or relatives visiting Croatia from Belgrade. Belgrade as a tourist destination is as attractive option to Croats as Sofia and Bucharest are, there are about 2000 Croats going to these two cities for a city brake each year. if AS has more than 45000 pax on Zagreb - Belgrade route per year I'd be highly surprised.

    1. Anonymous13:16

They won't switch their NB fleet to A/B mix, I even think they have legal obligations to keep it pure A because of the terrible 1998 Yugoslavia/Airbus deal. Anyway, going purely with A32X NEO will increase efficiencies anyway, and 737 MAX doesn't add much compared with it. A330 is a sure thing for WB, the only question is whether they'll commit to buying new airplanes with a target 2018+ delivery date and if they do, IMO, it's probably going to be A330 NEO. A350 XWB is a bit too much for them at the present moment. Either way, ASL's future is bright.

So Pristina is the last (major) city not served by AS, this will probably come in 2015. AS will then have a great network in the Balkans. I'm wondering how AS can use this advantage to be the dominant cargo carrier in the region. Maybe exclusively distribute for DHL, UPS and other courier companies to the region, since almost every major airport will be covered.

I am wondering if Ohrid could also work during the winter season. Maybe they could run it at a reduced frequency, two or three times per week.

    2. Anonymous13:04

What is the catchment area of Ohrid?Since in the winter there would be few tourists visiting I would imagine.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous13:05

I also mean population of this catchment area.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous13:08

I guess Ohrid could also be attractive for people who live in the south of the country. Maybe even some people from Albania?

      Delete
    5. Anonymous14:01

There are soo many macedonians from the ohrid-region (ohrid, struga, resen, bitola etc...) from australia and america that will use this line since skopje is far away, also many swedish, polacks and germans will use it as tourists (and diaspora)
Albania is near too so many albanians will fly this route too...but it's all up to airserbia, maybe there isn't that big demand

      Delete
    6. Anonymous14:03

I think it has more to do with fleet shortage rather than with a lack of demand. By the way, how are the road links between western Macedonia and eastern Albania?

Let's also not forget that Ohrid did offer subsidies to Air Serbia.

In 2004, Belgrade airport handled 2.045.000 passengers (+11%).
In 2010, which was the first visa free year, the airport handled 2.698.000. In 2014 the airport will handle around 4.600.000! Nice growth over the years.

I do not see any reason for worry. The flight crew is not going into the city, and I am sure they will have Albanian speaking crew on board. After a few weeks/months people in Kosovo will hear that it is no big deal to fly AS as long as the price is right.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous18:50

Albanian speaking crew? :)) there is no such thing in JU. if there was they would also be flying to TIA, and trust me no one speaks a word of Albanianfrom our crew members!

      Delete
    4. Anonymous18:50

I am not worried about most people but of few hot heads who might cause the problem and create bad publicity.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous19:03

You don't think that AS could advertise for new flight crew with fluency in Albanian as a prerequisite? I think they can easily find a few people who speak Serbian, English, & Albanian in Belgrad. And it would be a big plus and very professional of AS on their flights to TIR & later PRN. I'm not saying that on each flight they should have someone who speaks the language of the destination city, but in this case it would be helpful, at least for a while.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous19:19

They could đefinitely, but i dont think they will do it having in mind they havent done it for TIA nor any other destination. When i flew on EY they had serbian speaking crew and even menu in serbian, but thats EY. i dont see it happening on JU flights.

what market is bigger or better said more lucrative for JU; PRN or TIA?

      Delete
    7. Anonymous19:54

Why they need to be from Belgrade? Im sure they could find few young Albanologists for the cabin crew. Also they could employ some Kosovo Albaninans or Goranis who can speak all 3 languages

      Delete
    8. Anonymous21:01

Why not get three or four Kosovo Albanian crew who used to work for Belle Air? They could work on the Tirana / Pristina flights plus another afternoon flight.

      Delete
    9. Anonymous21:16

Why is TIA or PRN so important that its should get Albanian speaking crew?

Why doesnt SVO, TLV, BEY or any other destination in the network get that before Tirana or Pristina?

Its not economical to relocate people, give them apartments, so on and so on... Not even to mention how they would be crucified in media for employing Kosovo Albanians instead of Serbians...

If no one speaks Russian on SVO or Hebrew on TLV why should anyone speak Albanian on flight that a lot of people (rightfully or not) consider to be domestic flight?

LH does not care about your nationality... Sprechen Sie Deutsch oder Englisch? Nein, tut mir leid :)

That's why Lufty puts a safety video in the language of the country they are flying to. I remember that a few times when i flew with them they had a Serbian stewardess.

    11. Anonymous21:52

Swiss also does an audio safety demo in Serbian on their flights to Belgrade as well.
Nothing's wrong with that, maybe they can offer similar in Albanian...
Also remember when I flew Malev in 2010 to AMM and BEY, they also had an audio safety demo in Arabic...

Why on earth would they fly to Amman. It's full of mainline European carriers, and what's more, ties between Jordan and Serbia are underdeveloped. They should instead have Tehran on their horizons. Exremely lucrative if we take into account the potential for all the Iranians transferring to France, Germany, Scandinavia

      Delete
    5. Anonymous20:29

The same reason they fly to Beirut or Warsaw, to get transfer passengers. Plus, Tehran is also full of mainline carriers and there are more chances of them competing with Etihad.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous20:31

Let me check... Cairo was announced back in 2013 then pulled back, so no brainer really.

BCN is already served by Vueling in the high season, and Aviolet covers nearby charter destinations. On the other hand, MAD has zero competition, and is the go to hub for LATAM connections.

AMM already has impressive connectivity and competition to Europe and is expanding routes to North America, unlike Tehran.

I'll have to look closer into numbers but from the top of my head it looks like Dante is yanking our chain here...

Anonymous 8:29. There is a difference between Beirut and Amman. MEA's network is not as large as Royal Jordanian's, thus there is space for ASL to squeeze in.

      Delete
    9. Anonymous20:43

MEA is actually far more competitive and healthy than RJ which is on the verge of bankruptcy. They have also reduced a lot of their destinations. So if we were to follow your logic they should withdraw from Istanbul and not consider Cairo?

I can't wait to see what JU's fleet will look like in a couple of years. Obviously there is the order for the A320 NEO's but at the rate they are growing and expanding I don't know if it will be enough. I think they've surprised even themselves with the progress they've made so far! Regardless, I was so happy to see this news. Very important for the region, not just from an aviation perspective, but also from a social, political, and economic one. I think its a step in the right direction for greater cooperation between Serbia and Croatia, as well as JU and OU.

  42. We keep mentioning Madrid as one of the desired destinations. I was wondering what kind of schedule would a flight to Madrid need to have. It is a 3 hour flight meaning the plane would have to be away from Belgrade for approx. 7 hours (like TLV or LHR). That makes it tricky to shedule and squeeze it in the morning wave or evening wave of departures and have it back in Belgrade in time for convenient connections with the midday departures from Belgrade... Sofia and Bucharest in particular. The only other option would be to send the plane to Madrid during night, at some ungodly hour. Not sure if that would work... Perhaps that is why Madrid is not in the cards yet.
What are the targeted connections for Tel Aviv passengers? There must be a reason why TLV has schedule completely different from Larnaca and Beirut, and from the planned Cairo.
