Adria to launch Maribor flights

Adria tipped to launch up to three new routes from Maribor Airport

Adria Airways will resume scheduled flights from Maribor Edvard Rusjan Airport, in Slovenia’s north-east, this summer season for the first time in fifteen years with the launch of three new routes. The Managing Director of Maribor Airport, Marko Gros, says Adria wants to develop a “low cost base” in the city. “Adria is a very serious partner in this project”, Mr. Gros says, adding that the airport is estimated to handled 36.000 passengers in 2015, double on last year’s 17.568 travellers. The exact destinations which will be served from Maribor will be revealed at a press conference in the city tomorrow morning, which will be attended by Adria Airways’ CEO, Mark Anžur. However, a three weekly service to London is expected to be announced among the three planned routes.

The decision to launch flights out of Slovenia’s second largest city marks a major turnaround for the national carrier. Last year, CEO Anžur said, “Adria attempted to fly from Maribor but it is difficult to operate flights out of secondary airports in Slovenia because it is a small country with well developed road infrastructure”. He added, “You can drive from Maribor to Ljubljana within an hour and a half”. Over the past few years the airline has only operated summer charters out of Maribor. However, Adria is shifting its focus from its home in Ljubljana to other markets. This summer it will have aircraft based in Pristina, Tirana and Lodz in Poland. Over the past few years, the airline has considered opening bases in cities which are relatively close to Slovenia, such as Klagenfurt in Austria and Verona in Italy. However, these plans did not materialise. You can review the airline’s planned 2015 summer network here.

Adria at Maribor Airport in the early 1980s

Edvard Rusjan Airport opened a new, fifteen million euro, terminal in 2012, with the capacity to handle 600.000 passengers per year. Further investments are planned with the expansion of the existing runway scheduled in two years time. However, the airport has struggled to attract customers for years. It is served by a handful of charters during the high season, with services to Greece and Turkey to be maintained this summer as well. Furthermore, the airport hopes to see charters from Egypt and Azerbaijan too. “There is a possibility for charters to Egypt to operate during the second half of the summer season. In addition, there is demand from Azerbaijan”, Mr. Gros says. Maribor Airport opened for commercial use in 1976. It was served by low cost Ryanair for several months, between 2007 and 2008, but the service was suspended due to poor loads. In 2010, Adria and several other airlines relocated to Maribor during Ljubljana Airport’s runway overhaul. Late last year, the country’s union-owned bank, Delavska hranilica, acquired a 57% stake in the airport, admitting that one of the reasons for its investment was to show that the sale of Slovenia's largest airport operator, Aerodrom Ljubljana, which manages Ljubljana Airport, to Germany’s Fraport was a mistake.

They need to do some big marketing in Austria too - Graz lost its connection to London over two years ago, so a direct flight from Maribor would be quicker than driving to Vienna or Klagenfurt!

3 flights are fair enough! I am glad they finally recognized their own market! I think Air Serbia could do the same at INI in the future leasing aditional ATR and flying to Vienna and Ljubljana or Milan at least! Let see!

I wonder how many passangers on Air Serbia's two daily flights to Ljubljana would actually fly to Maribor if they had a choice?

Indirectly related to yesterdays topic and why Zagreb has more chances to become KE's cargo stop in an effort to reduce costs, instead of a scheduled passenger one:

In 2009, Korean Air Cargo took over the management of the Navoiy airport in central Uzbekistan and, under the 10-year development plan, further accelerated the modernization program. Construction of the largest air cargo terminal in Central Asia that can handle 100,000 tons of cargo annually using latest equipment has been recently completed and inaugurated on August 12, 2010. The freighter apron has also been constructed to accommodate 5 B747-400 planes and 4 additional fuel tanks were built, which can supply 1.4 million gallons of aviation fuel altogether and fill up more than 25 B747-400 airplanes. Korean Air inaugurated the 1st cargo flight from Navoiy in August, 2008 and by increasing the frequency it now operates 12 weekly B747-400F flights to Incheon, Brussels and Milan.

Quite the opposite, gives a fairly balanced overview of BEG and ASL on par with other articles. CAPA is well respected source in the industry.

Naysayers are advised to point to other respectable aviation sources with more accurate coverage of the same topic, otherwise their negative comments deserve to be dismissed.

No one is disputing their aviation expertise (although Belgrade handled 4.7 million last year, not 4.3 as they say and has 6 cargo operators, not 3), but the political mumbo-jumbo.

^ Aleksandar I know that :D, but ZAG gets the upper hand since Athens pax will have to wait for an hour in ZAG. After a 7 hour flight I would not be too happy to wait for another hour and then a flight of almost 2 hours. Maybe they decided to do that since ZAG flights will sell better than Athens?

Not correct. Athens-Toronto will have a choice of 3 routings: nonstop, stop in Zagreb or stop in Montreal with SkyGreece. Flights are still not searchable using internet travel sites.

Are Qatar flights to BEG and SOF going so well or are they planning to terminate BEG? I was just looking for tickets to Doha and Pegasus was like 400 euros while Qatar is close to a 1000. As discussed already would not be surprised if Qatar terminates BEG after not being allowed fifth freedom

I think their loads are ok, not great but fine, although with serious fluctuations for the time being. With SOF it should be working, since neither route could do it alone and i don't see Qatar axing both and almost completely getting out of SE Europe. Also they have interline with Air Serbia and they're getting some regional pax as well.
