Split Airport handles millionth passenger

Split Airport anticipates 6% passenger growth in 2015

Split Airport welcomed its millionth passenger this year on Wednesday, eight days ahead of 2014. The lucky millionth passenger, Satumaarika Emmesjoe, arrived on a Croatia Airlines flight from Zurich. To mark the occasion, Ms Emmesjoe was awarded two return tickets to any destination in Croatia Airlines’ international network and received a gift voucher from Split Airport Duty Free. Split Airport has recorded 11% passenger growth so far this year. It was the former Yugoslavia’s third busiest airport in 2014 and is the second busiest in Croatia after Zagreb, handling a record 1.7 million passengers last year. “During 2015 we expect to increase passenger numbers by 6%. As a result, we will handle some 1.860.000 passengers”, the airport’s Managing Director, Lukša Novak, said. He added, “We also plan to continue to invest in airport equipment which will ensure the best aircraft handling and services”.

The Croatian government recently announced the construction of a new multi million euro terminal at Split Airport, which will stretch over 34.500 square metres and increase the airport’s capacity to 3.5 million passengers per year. Furthermore, the car park and bus area will be expanded by 35.500 square metres. Work on the 59.3 million euro expansion project is expected to begin in autumn or early winter. It is estimated to take just over two years to complete the investment. The new terminal will improve the quality of passenger services and will enforce European Union standards for international border crossings in line with the Schengen Agreement. Furthermore, it will ease capacity issues which are present during the peak summer season.

Split Airport's terminal project

Mr Novak believes the airport will hit the two million passenger mark in 2017. During the first half of the year, Split welcomed 609.570 travellers, an increase of 10.6% compared to the same period in 2014. As a result, the airport handled 390.430 passengers this July, representing a new all-time record. Estimated revenue for this year is expected to amount to 34.4 million euros. Split Airport is the second in Croatia this year to handle over a million passengers, following Zagreb earlier last month, with Dubrovnik expected to follow suit soon.

Great for SPU but not so great for the pax. Imagine after a great vacation in Dalmatia and you come to the airport to leave and you see this mess. It may turn me off from flying to/from SPU in the summer in the future. I know SPU is highly seasonal but they have to make other arrangements, temporaraly increase capacity in the summer months.

That picture is not fun on vacation. Bad experience on vacation flights going there is forgiven once you get to the destination, but bad experiences coming back from vacation linger on for years. Stressful end of vacation does not bring tourists back.

Yeah, I still remember literally throwing my suitcase over some people in the check-in line to the agent. Fun times. Luckily, it had only 10kg or so...

One of those rare DC-10 flights out of TIV back in the 1990s.

But, actually it's only an interesting story now, not something I really hold against JU or TIV. Being 5 hours late on departure, now, that was a problem.

New Split terminal will be completed in 2 years. Only two more summers of queues.

  4. Last year, 2014 the airport welcomed 390,000 passengers in July. This year July figure has not been published yet but someone wrote that Split had passed 440,000 in July.

So the 1 millionth passenger should have been welcomed a few weeks back at Split?

The discrepancy on how they get the millionth figure has been raised before on this blog.

they got 609,000 for first 6 months of this year and they passed 1million on Wednesday. So for July should be around 410k, but we will soon find out

    3. The article states that Split welcomed 390,000 pax in July but this was last years figure. Someone wrote a while a while back (can't remember which day) that split passed 440,000 in July.

Now if what Admin meant was that Split welcomed 390,000 pax up until Wednesday the 29th of July , then all should be fine with the millionth passenger arriving on Wednesday. It all makes sense.

Now, I just got a little a head of myself, I thought the article was implying that yesterday Split welcomed the millionth passenger.

      A bit tired here :).

Way to go Split !!!
