Fast growing Skopje Airport overtakes Ljubljana in 2015

2015 proved to be a busy year for the largest commercial airports across the former Yugoslavia. For only the second time, a total of seven airports handled over one million passengers, while Belgrade, Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Skopje, Sarajevo and Podgorica saw their busiest year on record. Among the top ten airports, Skopje Alexander the Great was the fastest growing, with an annual growth rate of 20.2%. It added an impressive six new routes during the year and overtook Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, thus positioning itself as the sixth busiest in the former Yugoslavia. As a result, Ljubljana moved down one position, despite adding almost 100.000 passengers on the year before. Over the past decade, Macedonia's busiest airport saw the biggest growth in numbers, up 176.2%.

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport maintained its position as the busiest in the former Yugoslavia. It estimates its figures will increase 4% - 6% in 2016. Croatia's three busiest airports - Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik - handled a combined total of 6.27 million travellers. Split Airport anticipates hitting the two million passenger mark this year, while its counterpart in Dubrovnik forecasts growth of 5% - 6% in 2016. Pristina saw itself recover, recording its second best result of all time. Although poor weather conditions in December hampered Sarajevo Airport's efforts of handling 800.000 passengers in 2015, it saw its best result since opening its doors with figures improving 8.9%.

On the other hand, Tivat Airport was the only amongst the ten busiest to see its figures decline on the year before. Its operator said in a statement, "The decline comes purely as a result of the Ukraine crisis, which had an impact on Montenegro's tourism industry as a whole. Therefore, we view this result as an achievement". In contrast, Tivat's local counterpart, Podgorica, registered an improvement in numbers, adding 46.855 passengers on the year before. Overall, the Montenegrin capital recorded a 131% jump in figures over the past ten years.

Congratulations to Skopje! Who would have thought a few years ago. It will be very interesting how things move on in this year. Thanks for including the comparison over the 10 years. I'm shocked Ljubljana didn't improve much more.

It's due to competition. Ljubljana's got ZAG, GRZ, TRS, VCE, TSF, VIE, MUC, BGY, MXP all within a few hours' drive + RJK, PUY, KLU, BUD, VRN, BLQ, SZG,...

LJU unfortunately still hasn't reached its all-time (pre-crisis) record of 1.69 mil pax from 2008, hence such a result. Mostly due to Adria cutting frequencies while at the same time opening and developing bases out of PRN and other cities.

As you say...LJU has the biggest competition among all ex-yu airports and is good as the PAX can pick the best offer. Anyway LJU is the hero because it has to fight in such a concentrated and competitive enviroment

If you have so much competition, then try and reestablish yourself as a low cost hub or try not to rely on a near bankrupt airline which has a 70% share of all passengers. 18% growth in 10 years is just poor form.

Also LJU has very high fees (even higher now with Fraport) so you will have difficulty attracting new airline.

You can compare some of them through these links. From what I see landing is pricy at LJU as well as use of infrastructure compared to other airports but taxes are lower.

What do you guys think, can the Macedonian market handle daily Turkish flight to OHD along with the existing flights to SKP?

    ReplyDelete

Yes it can, probably with A319, if not daily at east 5 per week.
Also Aeroflot should introduce SKP 3 times from SVO or S7 from DME , same 3 times per week.

Can not understand SKP's lack of connection with Russia. Belgrade has 3 airlines that operate on Belgrade-Moscow route. I am aware that Macedonia doesnt have as close of ties as Serbia does, but I think that a 3 or 4 weekly line can be sustained. Plus I simply can not understand why Ohrid doesnt have any charters from Russia during the summer. If you could get anyone on the "religious turism" it is the Russians...

PRN nece poceti do juna a mozda ni kasnije. Zadar su demantovali pre neki dan. Nema najave novih aviona i novih destinacija, osim JFK. Ako ne bude nikakvih iznenadjenja i novih destinacija nego samo JFK onda su nikakve sanse da Beograd stigne do 5 miliona. Air Serbia ce imati mali rast zbog te jedne linije ali su moguca iznenadjenja.

JU will be increasing frequencies according to the schedule shown on airserbia.com to quite a few destinations, BEY, SOF, TIA, OTP, DBV, SPU. With CLF ~80% there is still room to grow. Midnight wave is lacking flights which could easily be used ie: IST, ESB, AMM, AER to give a couple examples. 250 seats on the A330 should bring roughly 62.000 pax with full loads. PRN I am sure will start, tickets are not exactly cheap ex PRN from a lack of proper competition to dominant Star Alliance, bringing people to SKP to travel. Lets wait and see.
