Bihać Airport construction to begin

The construction of Bihać Airport's terminal building, in north-western Bosnia and Herzegovina, is expected to begin soon, with the Federal government recently allocating some of the funds for the 13.2 million euro project. Last December, the municipal council in Bihać approved the creation of a public operator for the airport. Local authorities are in talks with Turkey's Çelebi Aviation Holding, a ground handling services company, to partake in the project's funding through a public private partnership. "There is also interest from a Saudi investment fund based in Dubai", Smail Toromanović, the advisor to the Mayor of Bihać, said. The aim is to develop the existing airfield into a commercial airport.

The Federal government of Bosnia and Herzegovina will provide just over one million euros for the airport on an annual basis. "After we receive the initial funding, we will issue a public call to obtain all necessary project documentation”, Mr Toromanović, said. He added, "This project is of great importance to the region for the development of both the local tourism industry and economy, even if the airport caters only for charter flights. The land around the airfield is owned by the city, so there should be no issues concerning possession rights". The Bihać-based Euroing company has completed the design of the future terminal building.

The Bihać Airport project will also encompass the construction of a new control tower and the lengthening of the runway from the current 1.200 metres to 2.000 metres. Authorities hope for the airport to handle both passenger and cargo flights. No firm timeframe has been given for the project's completion. Once built, it will become Bosnia and Herzegovina's fifth commercial airport, following Sarajevo, Tuzla, Mostar and Banja Luka, which handled a record 1.129.749 passengers in 2015. Bihać is located near the Croatian border and is the country's eighth largest city.

Well, since the population of Serbia is more than double that of Bosnia, a third functional airport there would make far more sense than a 5th functional one across the Drina. No?

Why the hell does Užice need an airport? Or Kraljevo? Somebody would even say why Tuzla needs an airport and look at TZL today, almost 300k pax yearly.

What is a problem with people in exYU to spend money on stupid project?

    Morava airport = 0 passengers
    Užice airport = 0 passengers
Trebnje airport = huge plans, company, employees, spent money, never built
Banja Luka airport = lot of money spent, employees, subventions, for just 800 passengers per month
Nikšić airport = plan to be build for what?
Bihać airport = plan to be build for what?

They spent millions of EUR for stupid no-use airport and people in Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro are starving having the lowest standard in Europe...

There is a project to build an airport on Rab and is ridiculous as Bihac Airport.

"Rab Island, located off Croatia’s north-western coastline is likely to become the sight of the country’s tenth commercial airport. A total of 800.000 euros have been spent on various surveys and environmental impact reviews of the future airport sight, all of which have been financed through the European Union's Pre-Accession Assistance Funds. According to preliminary plans, the airport will be used for both domestic and international flights and will feature a 1.700 metre long and 45 metre wide runway. In addition, it will have the ability to accommodate aircraft with a capacity to seat up to 150 passengers. According to local authorities, the airport could handle over 200.000 passengers per year with some 50.000 arriving from the European Union and a further 75.000 travellers from Russia and the Far East. Rab Airport will also be able to handle cargo traffic and will feature hangars and pilot training facilities. The airport will also offer parking, which will be able accommodate 500 vehicles, a first aid and fire bridge service, customs, duty free and other facilities in line with international standards. However, concerns have been raised over the airport’s viability. Rab is sandwiched in between Rijeka and Lošinj airports, the latter of which is struggling to attract larger-volume traffic itself".

I have noticed that on city pair ZRH-ZAG OU and LX usually use relatively small machine such is Q400 or AVRO. Is it matter of low demand or something else, Purger and others?

Smaller airplane for more frequencies. On that way they manage 3 flights per day with much better connection to ZRH and ZAG waves. As it is flight of some 1:30 hours Q400 is perfect for the route. Same thing is with VIE where you have 5 flights per day and MUC with 4 flights per day.

The problem I see with this project is from which area would the y land and take off. The airport is close to the Croatian border and they would have to use Croatian airspace. I just look back that it took many years before Osijek was able to receive traffic, because many planes landing into Osijek start approah over Serbia. Just a thought

I šta dalje?

Western Bosnia does need a functional airport (at least a seasonal one) as a large number of people live (probably half a million+) in Europe and further afield. When they want to travel to that area they either need to land in Zagreb or one of the airports on the Croatian coast. Because of the crap roads and infrastructure it then takes them another 3-6 hours car/bus travel to get to their destination. Banja Luka airport has not been fucntional for many years. Tuzla/Mostar/Sarajevo again have crap road links with western Bosnia. I guess it would be cheaper to make Banja Luka airport functional but with the current political establishment highly unlikely.
