Ohrid Airport among Europe's fastest growing

NEWS FLASH

Ohrid Airport was the second fastest growing in Europe in the first quarter of 2016, according to ACI Europe (Airports Council International). Passenger numbers increased 173.9% during the three-month period. Growth was fuelled by Wizz Air, which launched services from the lakeside city to London and Basel last summer. "We expect for growth to continue until the end of the year, having in mind existing charter flights from the Netherlands, but also new scheduled services between Ohrid and Belgrade that we will introduce in June together with Air Serbia. Furthermore, there will be new charter flights between Ohrid and Tel Aviv operated by the Israeli airline Arkia and a Ohrid - Brussels service run by the biggest European tour operator - Thomas Cook, which also commences next month", Zoran Krstevski, the General Manager of airport operator TAV Macedonia said. The fastest growing airport in Europe in the category of five million passengers per year or less was Liege, where figures grew 275.4% due to the diversion of flights from Brussels after the terrorist attacks in the Belgian capital. It was followed by Ohrid, then Ostend in Belgium (136.6%), Santorini in Greece (127.1%) and Oradea in Romania (70.7%). If April's figures are included, Ohrid Airport handled 20.012 passengers so far this year, an increase of 228.7% on the same period in 2015.

Flights to LTN are seasonal and have always been, while flights to Basel are all year around.
