Qatar Airways to boost EX-YU operations

Qatar Airways will boost its operations from Doha to the former Yugoslavia this winter for a third year in a row. The airline will begin the expansion by maintaining its ten weekly service to Zagreb throughout the winter season, up from last year's seven, and boosting capacity on seven of its weekly services. The carrier plans to use its 182-seat Airbus A321 aircraft on the route instead of the A320. The A321 features twelve seats in business class and the remaining 170 in economy. The upgrade bodes well for the airline's operations next summer, which could see it operate double daily flights between the two capital cities. "Qatar Airways constantly reviews market conditions in order to respond to passenger demand and the increase in flights to Zagreb to a ten weekly operation was a direct reflection of this. While we are unable to comment directly on future commercial plans, it is true that in a number of markets, where we have increased operations from a daily, to then ten weekly operation, we have then seen an increase to a double daily operations, such as Bucharest which commenced double daily flights to Doha this August", a Qatar spokesperson told EX-YU Aviation News.

This March, Qatar Airways launched nonstop flights to Belgrade, which were previously operated via Sofia. During the winter, the airline will maintain four weekly flights on the route, as was the case this summer, and will continue to run the service without a stop. According to the "Aviatica" portal, the airline has recorded strong passenger growth after it upgraded the route to a non-stop operation, with numbers improving up to 90%. This is despite the airline facing strong competition on the market from Etihad Airways, Air Serbia and Flydubai. However, the carrier says its on board product gives it a competitive edge over its rivals. Commenting on the passenger structure on these flights, the airline told EX-YU Aviation News, "While it has to be said that we are seeing an increasing number of people travelling to Doha from the former Yugoslavia, most of our passengers travel through Doha to one of our more than 150 global destinations".

Despite delaying the launch of its flights to Skopje and Sarajevo, which were initially scheduled to launch in October and November respectively, Qatar Airways is committed to introducing these services and has denied claims that the two have been dropped altogether. Flights to Skopje are now expected to commence during the first quarter of 2017, while services to Sarajevo will launch "as soon as possible", although no exact timeframe has been given. In the lead up to the service launch, Qatar Airways is hiring a number of staff members in the Bosnian capital including airport service agents, supervisors and managers. Furthermore, this September, the airline will hold cabin crew recruitment events in both Skopje and Sarajevo. The Qatari carrier is believed to be considering flights to Dubrovnik next year, while other possibilities in the former Yugoslavia include both Ljubljana and Pristina, however, future expansion is being hampered by the late delivery of its aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing.

    My guess for summer 2017

    ZAG - Double daily
    BEG - Daily
SKP/SJJ will probably remain 3x per week

I doubt we will see any new destinations in ex-yu next summer, at least until they get their aircraft deliveries.

Purchase of 49% of Air Serbia and codeshares did not increase EY feed capacity by much. Only increase is A319 to A320 in 3 years.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous10:25

And I'm sure you have insight into their feed. Their planes to and from BEG are constantly full even Air Serbia is now regularly full. Unlike Qatar and Emirates, Etihad actually BOUGHT an airline. Of course they are not going to launch places like Zagreb and Sarajevo when they have an airline they bought flying those routes.

It would be unwise for JU to increase AUH to an A320 as it means it would miss two rotations. Also, JU's A319s have more seats than EY's A320s. The next logical step would be for EY to increase BEG to an A321. Logically, they should be the ones who should be looking to improve their CASM on the route.

As for QR in ZAG, don't forget that it's because the market is much less competitive. It was only a few years ago that ZAG started to get decent links to the East.

      Delete
    16. Anonymous12:23

Good to see QR making such positive progress in ZAG. Lower competition and highest demand from AU/Asia in ex YU is basically main reason. Let's see if soon somenody else jumps on board to chase that, as FZ inccreasing its frequencies since I doubt EK will send its wide body any time soon to ex YU.

    17. JATBEGMEL14:20

JU onboard hard product to the ME is the worst to the Gulf. The only advantage JU has is frequency. I just hope the cabin will be much better in the A320 neos when they arrive.

      @ anonymous 10,30am

JU is not constantly full. Currently, the loads are good (full and overbooked) because it is the high season. Give it another month and a half and the load will drop. I don't think EY does well in promoting JU connections as much as it does its own, sadly.

      @ anonymous 10,35am

June to Mid September is where both EY and JU are overbooked, and its been like that the past couple of years. After that, EY remains full and JU somewhat.

      @ nemjee

EY doesn't have the capacity nor does AUH have the space for additional pax, as it struggles to accommodate what they currently have. The A319's were too little capacity for a long time yet only this year changed it to the A320, and even still the summer went overbooked. Rumour has it that EY will again drop BEG and again let JU take over their flight.

      Delete
    18. Anonymous18:22

^That would be a downgrade and people will switch to the competition immediately.

I think the schedule to and from Sydney is a major reason why they are so successful in Zagreb. 21 hours hassle free flight.

My only complaint is the food on offer. Really disappointing especially when you're expecting so much from them because of their reputation. Doha to Sydney had almost an identical menu to Zagreb Doha but with a breakfast offering as the only difference. 150 000 Aussies visit Croatia each year, 50 000 Kiwis.

Most Asian Tourist arrive via Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France. Qatar and Turkish also have a piece of pie but not to assume only tourist fly to Zagreb with QR is silly and uninformed.

Also number of Chinese visitors to Croatia in 2016 is expected to top 340 000, in 20-17 that number is expected to hit 500 000. Even with daily out of Beijing by Capitol Beijing Airlines with A 380 would hardly dent that number. By 2020, 1 million Chinese tourist are expected to visit Croatia and Zagreb by 2020, 500 000 South Koreans, 500 000 Japanese, 550-750 000 US, 150-250 000 Canadians, 250-300 000 Australian visitors.

QR would need to send A380 double daily just to cover 10% of demand for Asian tourist, not even talking Australia and New Zealand.

Korean Air, Capitol Beijing Airline, Qatar Airways, ANA/JAL are all coming to Zagreb big time in 2017, most likely full on year round service in 2018, with most having trice weekly service to Zagreb in 2019, with QR probably flying to Zagreb with B787/A350 double daily. With 3 million visitors from Australasia each year projected by 2020, there'll be plenty of room for everyone, I can guarantee you that, Turkish I predict will have trice daily flights to Zagreb in no time.

Lufthansa from five daily to 10 daily flights and Air France to trice daily service, BA and KLM too.

Zagreb will see massive influx and numbers should go up really fast. No idea how fast the airport management can expand the new terminal, but by 2020 they'll have to.

      1. Atenu, Milano, Prag, Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelonu = year round!
      3. Uvesti Stockholm, Hamburg, Genevu, Sofiju = year round (možda i Bukurešt)

      Delete

Jas sam leteo SOF - DOH - JFK i dobio sam hotelska soba u Oryx Rotana u Doha.

Nothing is confirmed, however there is a lot of talk that FZ will move over entirely next year to DWC, to enable EK more slots for expansion. However, I dont think there is enough space in DWC for the entire FZ network at this moment. A complete move to DWC would affect EK, which has seen a drop in CLF evident in the last financial report.

    3. Anonymous08:28

Not enough space in DWC? I think they currently use some 1,5% of their maximum capacity. It is planned to become the world's largest airport once all DXB traffic moves over.

Once everything is built, yes, it will be amongst the largest in the world. However, not much has been built. 3 flights and the car parking facility is almost full, let alone the rest. Proper access roads still havnt been constructed to the airport, let alone basing an airline of 50+ ac there.

My guess is that this was either a group travelling in business class or a strange occurrence as it's mostly empty. JU really needs to promote its premium cabin much more, not only on long-haul but short-haul as well.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but TK is having massive network cuts in both short haul and long haul flights. There are cuts from JFK (downgrade from 3x to 2x/day), to flights in Europe including:

Zagreb - Reduce from 14 to 10 weekly
Priština - Reduce from 14 to 10 weekly

Why do they do these massive network cuts? Do they arrested a lot of TK employees and can't fulfill all the positions now or they are not popular nowadays? I was affected by these cuts, and I had to cancel my ticket to JFK. Considering other options now including QTR.

Who on earth would go from Europe to DOH/AUH/DXB first in order to fly to the US/Canada? Do you guys have too much time? Seriously a least 20h in planes instead of 10h flying? Goodness me!
Thats like going to OSL on my way to JNB as SAS offers 20 EUR cheaper fare - just much worse.
