NEWS FLASH

Ryanair has suspended its flights between London Stansted and Osijek with immediate effect due to an ongoing spat with the airport over subsidies. The route, which was initially operated on a seasonal summer basis but was extended throughout the year this winter, has been terminated after Osijek Airport refused to provide subsidies in the form of advertising concessions to the airline. "The conditions put forward by Ryanair were unacceptable. I believe this is the main reason for the service suspension but we are yet to receive official word from the airline", the General Manager of Osijek Airport, Domagoj Marinić, said. The Stansted - Osijek route was Ryanair's only year-long service to Croatia. Ticket sales for the route have been discontinued.

Typical Ryanair. They are just the worst.

This is why I said it won't last, Ryan Air is one of those airlines that only flies to destinations if they're paid to do so by local airports. I think WizzAir might be luckier in Osijek if they ever decide to come.

Also Osijek has good connections with Zagreb via motorway and fast train connection (3-4 hours in Zagreb) as well as Trade Air flights. City will be fine no matter what.

It's actually not true, Ryanair flies to a lot (if not most) places without any subsidies from the airport/government.

But they do tend to demand that when starting to fly "risky" new routes (Maribor, Osijek, etc.).

Unapred se izvinjavam sto mracim. Nisam iznenadjen ovim povlacenjem Ryanaira.
Dvadeset godina posle kraja rata.
Zato Agrocoru ide dobro, a Croatia prodaje LHR slotove.

Wizzair already entered Osijek with the recent announcement of service to Basel starting in mid-May. Depending on how that goes, I wouldn't be surprised if Wizz launches a Luton route.

Is this new or does Ryan Air have a history of suspending services to airports which don't pay subsidiaries? It will be interesting if more airports start to refuse to pay.... what would Ryan Air do then?

Didn't Ryanair fly a London-Osijek route around 2008/09 then suspend it?

I might be mistaken but I am convinced that happened.

There were lost of cases several years ago, mainly in France and Spain, where the airports/local authorities tried to sue Ryanair due to the cancellation of the flights even though huge amounts are paid to the carrier via "marketing agreements". The only thing they were not aware of is that Ryanair has a solid legal team and keeps itself safe all the time.

I am sorry but this is a dick move by OSI. Ryanair has kept them alive when no one wanted to fly there but the moment they get W6 and EW they chase out FR.

Very good new for Tuzla - Luton route with Wizz, but also maybe a good opportunity for Ryan to start flying to Tuzla? :)
