Dubrovnik Airport will partially open its new multi million euro Terminal C building today, with the facility to be fully functional by April. "The first phase of the opening will take place today. Check-in and security check points will be moved to the new terminal. As a result, the Terminal A building will be completely closed for passenger traffic. We hope to make the full move to Terminal C by the start of the summer season. We are delighted with the opening of the new terminal, which will boost our passenger services", the airport said in a statement. The new terminal is spread out over 24.181 square metres and is located next to the existing Terminal B building. The two will be combined into a single functioning unit. On the other hand, Terminal A will be used solely as a baggage sorting facility.

The first passengers set to check in at the new terminal are those travelling on Croatia Airlines' flight to Zagreb at 13.20. The facility features check-in and commercial space stretching over 1.000 square metres, eight security lanes, a departure lounge with commercial and catering facilities, a premium lounge and restaurants. Furthermore, it boasts sixteen gates, two of which will be used for domestic flights and the remaining fourteen for international services. It is all part of a major 274 million euro expansion, which includes the construction of the new storage facility, access roads, a car park and the lengthening of the runway and taxiways. The airport will expand its apron and taxiways next year, while the overhaul of the runway is scheduled for next winter. The entire expansion is to be completed in 2019 and is being financed mainly through EU structural funds and local bank loans. The project will cater for future growth in traffic and improve safety and service standards. The airport launched tender procedures for these major upgrades in mid-January with the deadline for the submission of bids set for March 3.

Dubrovnik terminals A, B, C layout

Dubrovnik Airport registered its busiest year on record in 2016 by handling 1.993.243 passengers, an increase of 17.7% compared to last year. Croatia Airlines accounted for 19.1% of all traffic, followed by easyJet (11%), Norwegian Air Shuttle (8.9%), Vueling Airlines (5.4%) and Thomson Airways (4.7%). The busiest routes were London, Paris, Barcelona, Manchester, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Madrid and Dublin, The airport started 2017 on a strong note by welcoming 19.329 travellers through its doors, up 23.4% on the same month last year. The figures were aided by the promotion of Nissan's new-generation Mirca model, which is taking place in the city. The Japanese automaker will host over 7.000 agents and 500 journalists in Dubrovnik between January 9 and March 23. As a result, an additional fifty special flights will be operated during this period. Meanwhile, a number of airlines have announced plans to launch new services to Dubrovnik this summer season. They include Eurowings, Jet2.com, Monarch Airlines, easyJet, Flybe, Volotea and Thomson Airways. However, despite plans for flights to New York to be introduced this summer, the airport told EX-YU Aviation News there was no progress in this regard nor are there any indications the flights could commence soon.

All of this airport development in Croatia is very impressive.

Dubrovnik was always the best run airport in the country. Congratulations on opening it well ahead of the summer season.

Split, watch and learn.

Combined terminal B and C will have an area of around 37,000 sqm. That would make it one of the bigger airports in ex-Yu.

Smart decision to turn the old terminal into baggage sorting facility.

And they did not need foreigners to come in in form of a concession to do it all. Congratulations!

Maybe Croatia Airlines will pay more attention to Dubrovnik now.

No way. They are too busy coming up with different plans every second day.

Congrats. Shame about the US flights though. I think it could have worked. There is definitely potential.

It should be number four if Zagreb's new terminal is counted, which is the biggest.

What airlines will send their widebodies to DBV next summer? Can all airbridges handle large aircraft at the same time?
09:13
Anonymous said…
OU - note. Number 1 route DBV to LON and you are selling slots citing that it is loss making? Perhaps your business plan coupled with an ineffectual management team needs scrutiny - just a thought!

Thanks god A building will not be used any more for domestic departures. It was depressing and claustrophobic, always overcrowded even if there was just one domestic departure at a time, no window (just tinny one on door)... I really hate that departure zone, and have to use it several times per year.

Not sure how a new terminal will make them pay attention. They suspended Rome last year and their new Dubrovnik-Frankfurt route is performing quite poorly this winter. More promotion would not hurt.

Like someone said above Dubrovnik Airport has had one of the best management teams. It's a bit sad that Dubrovnik Airline failed. Passenger numbers would have reached well over 2 million last year if they were still around.
09:20
Anonymous said…
DBV will have four air birdges (two are already installed and functioning, two more are going to be installed by the summer season). DBV has 16 gates, not air bridges.
09:23

Thomson will send the B787 and B767. Not sure about the others.
09:23

Yes. How many gates in total does the new terminal in Zagreb have?
09:24

It would have been a cherry on top of the cake in 2017 which will be huge. New terminal opening, so many new routes. Let's hope it happens in 2018.
09:27

What an exciting few months for Croatian aviation :)
09:28

15 gates overall - 8 air bridges + 7 bus gates (I think :P)

I think it would have been really difficult for Dubrovnik Airlines to compete against all the LCCs and leisure airlines flying to Dubrovnik today.
09:33
Anonymous said…
Hmm... I thought LX operated daily flights last year. Strange that they can't make it 7/week. I guess OU has a tight grip on that market.
09:35

+1... on top of that, Dubrovnik Airlines had maddogs in it's flet, and they cost a fortune to maintain nowdays...
09:36

Well if Dubrovnik Airline was around maybe there wouldn't be as many LCCs there today. They had a good brand overall.

Yeah but they can get decent passengers in ZAG like they can in BEG or BUD. I still think it's OU that's the problem here.
10:19

Well that was the point. It forms practically one building.
10:27

@anonymous 9:18AM, In regards to Swiss, their booking engine has CS100 planned throughout the entire season to ZAG, starting from the Spring. Are you looking at the GDS data ? CS100 has 122 pax capacity, so 3pw is roughly similar to having 4pw with ARJ100 (97 pax), 4pw was last year's frequency. Only in 2015 (opening year) Swiss fly daily, due to the fact they were penetrating the market with capacity and lower prices...

No, it was repeatedly stated here, but QR will not extend in Croatia beyond Zagreb. Main obstacle was/is that QR doesn't do seasonal routes and year round DBV wouldn't be feasable.

The future plan is for ZAG to have 16 boarding bridges, not 20. And that will happen as part of phase two, which will commence with the apron extension, once the terminal reaches 3,5 million passengers. That should happen by the end of 2018. if everything goes as planned.

Nothing to do with jealousy, what is there to be jealous of exactly? It has to do with these being mentioned months ago and still nothing. Time is running out.

Perhaps it's only because of the photos, but monitors behind check-in agents look a bit small. I had a same impression regarding those in ZAG.

If someone had an opportunity to see it live in action, what do you think?

Departures hall was in building A. You used building B on arrival only.

The airport refers to the three structures as "terminals", as seen in their statement, hence the article uses the same terminology. Furthermore, if you read more carefully, the article also states, "The two will be combined into a single functioning unit".

I am referring to a reliable source, which was cited here at EX-YU Aviation News as well sometime in early January.
