The new check-in area will feature 475 square metres of additional space, ten check-in desks, two self bag drop-off points, three self check-in desks and one oversize baggage desk. Work is expected to be completed by May 1.

Terminal 1 overhaul

The overhaul of the check-in area in Terminal 1 is also ongoing. It entails capacity expansion, new commercial space and a new automated baggage sorting facility.

Future look
By the end of the year, the airport anticipates to complete work on a new observation deck at Terminal 1 and the reconstruction of its remaining four departure gates (illustrated below). This will include the overhaul of 2.640 square metres and the construction of an additional 6.360 square metres of space. The work will include the installation of five new jet bridges, with the last gate to cater for wide-body aircraft. Furthermore, an additional two ground floor gates will be opened from which passengers will be bussed to the aircraft at remote parking positions.

Fantastic. Only goes to show that we can do it ourselves.

So basically A9-A10 will be merged into a widebody gate and there will be a total of 7 bus gates: C7, A4a, A4b and these four?

Nope. There will remain five gates with jet bridges, only the finger A will be a bit extended, to handle a larger hall, a double jet bridge, and some extra groun space for heavies.

Currently, the following gates need to be updated: A6, A7, A8, A9 and A10. A10 currently doesn't have a waiting area.

So the original poster is right, the new gates will be A6, A7, A8, A9 (which will have a double bridge). This implies that they don't intend to expand the gates past gates A9 (A10).

It also shows some lack of long term thinking. When Serbia becomes EU/Schengen member, a part of the airport will have to be designated for intra-Schengen flights. Due to the size of traffic, this would probably be the A gates. However, there are no wide-body services expected intra EU... so what will happen to this gate then? The double bridge one? I know it's future we are talking about, but just shows the lack of knowledge, insights, thinking on the part of the decision makers.

By the time Serbia becomes a Schengen member the airport will have one or two new terminals. ;)

You gave me a good laugh. If Serbia joins EU in 2025 it will join Schengen by 2035 ... unless EU falls apart by then, which it probably will.

Getting into Schengen in 2025 is super optimistic best case scenario - more likely past 2030. Anyway, if they don't build a new terminal building by then (highly unlikely if JU continues to develop), it's going to be rather easy to put back the glass divider (or passport control booths) near gate A5... With the additional floor above C gates, that's all they really need.

There are no pictures of the most important part, new automated baggage sorting facility. If work in progress is not pictured it's just a fantasy.

Pictures of new ZAG baggage facility were recently posted here. If they were able to get picture permission, BEG must be able to do the same.

Well there are two reasons for that:

      1. ZAG's new terminal is not yet fully operational so when you go beyond the passport control you are not outside the country.

      2. They probably didn't ask for the permission or they didn't think of visiting the luggage sorting facility.

The model of the building looks good but I can't really see too much of an improvement except for some new aero bridges, some painting and a new small enclosed check in area.
I really like the way most of the 1960s terminal has been kept in tact
