Qatar Airways to launch Sarajevo on August 16

Qatar Airways has confirmed it will inaugurate its long awaited three weekly service from Doha to Sarajevo on August 16. Tickets are expected to go on sale this week with the airline to maintain a morning departure from Doha, arriving in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina prior to midday, before commencing its return journey an hour later. The airline becomes the first of the so-called "Middle East Big Three" carriers to serve Sarajevo. Qatar Airways has previously delayed the service launch on several occasions. Initially, flights were to begin on September 7, 2016 but were later pushed back to November 2. However, ticket sales were eventually suspended and the route was put on hold. The airline said the flights were moved around due to a delay in aircraft deliveries on order. However, with the economic sanctions imposed on Qatar by several Gulf states, the airline was able to redirect capacity and bring forward its plans for Sarajevo.

Qatar Airways A320 business class

Commenting on its new Sarajevo service, Qatar Airways' CEO, Akbar Al-Baker, previously said, “Qatar Airways prides itself on being a global connector, and most importantly, providing seamless and convenient connections for our customers, so that we remain their airline of choice. This new destination is where our customers want to go, and where we see the most opportunity to provide a best-in-class experience at great value. We look forward to growing our network and welcoming new passengers to Qatar Airways". Services to Sarajevo will operate with a 132-seat Airbus A320 aircraft, featuring twelve seats in business class and the remaining 120 in economy, the airline said in a statement. Although both Air Arabia and Nesma Airlines maintain seasonal services from the Middle East to Sarajevo, it is Flydubai that will be competing for transfer passengers against Qatar Airways.

Qatar Airways A320 economy class

Qatar Airways is putting a greater focus on the former Yugoslavia this year. The airline recently increased operations to Zagreb from ten weekly to double daily as of July 1, while capacity on its four weekly Belgrade service has been increased from the Airbus A320 to the A321. It will be followed up with the introduction of an additional three weekly flights from October 1. On the other hand, the airline will commence a four weekly service to Skopje from next Monday and has said it is considering future operations to Ljubljana as well. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar signed a new Air Service Agreement this May, regulating air traffic between the two countries. "As a global airline, we are committed to connecting cities such as Sarajevo and Skopje to our worldwide network. We are delighted to soon be celebrating these new and exciting destinations, connecting business and leisure passengers from the region to Doha and onwards", the airline told EX-YU Aviation News. In preparation for its new service to Sarajevo, the airline is hiring for a number of positions in the city.

Finally!
09:03

Isn't it a bit late to start selling tickets a month before flights start?
09:04
Anonymous said…
It depends. For example, if it's a BEG route then it's not just late - it is a clear indicator that it's not going to happen in our lifetime. Fake news.

If it's another exYU destination then it is business as usual, this is how all airlines normally do things.

Great news for Sarajevo!

Its a Gulf airline
They can afford to do weird things

The Middle East demand for Sarajevo is really huge. Apparently booking for Wataniya Airways from Kuwait is also doing great. Maybe we see Emirates in Sarajevo sooner rather than later.

Can a B777 land in Sarajevo?

I wish they launched Doha-Sarajevo-Ljubljana.

Great news for the diaspora in Australia The EK/FZ combo is not very convenient with terminal changes and different baggage policies.
09:15

It can though it could be performance penalized in certain conditions.

JU flew the DC-10 during the Olympics in 1984.
09:17

I think the runway is long enough, the only issue might be the actual operational handling of 777.
09:18

Fantastic news! Who would have thought a couple of years ago that Qatar Airways would be flying to 4 ex-Yu cities.
09:19
Anonymous said…
Excellent. It makes sense that they went nonstop to Sarajevo instead of having a technical stop seeing as Fly Dubai and Air Arabia offer nonstop flights. There is obviously huge demand between the Middle East and Sarajevo since Fly Dubai and Air Arabia fly even daily during the summer, plus flights to Kuwait and Riyadh.
09:21

Qatar is flying to almost every village, that no suprise.
09:21
Anonymous said…
What I find even more exciting is that we finally have a One World airline serving SJJ :D
09:22
Anonymous said…
Hopefully they put tickets on sale before 19th July so Sarajevo can be included in their global sale since tickets are currently 40% discounted.
09:23
Anonymous said…
Benefits of having both narrowbody and widebody fleet; they can adapt much more easily to this region in compariosn with EK for instance. Hope they do well in SJJ!
09:23
Anonymous said…
+1 the star alliance cartel at SJJ was getting ridiculous.
09:25
Anonymous said…
They'd get around handing a 777 if incapable now... performance wise, linking SJJ to DXB via BEG would likely be the optimal for payload, allowing them them minimal - if any restrictions while maximizing route potential.
09:27
Anonymous said…
Don't worry, even if they don't as soon as they put a new destination on sale they offer some dumping prices so I'm sure there will be Sarajevo-related promotions.

This is what the 6th new airline at Sarajevo this year? Good work.
09:28
Anonymous said…
Well I would say this is the second serious airline announcement for the Gulf after FlyDubai a few years ago. Good luck :)
09:29
Anonymous said…
The big issue when Sarajevo is concerned and airlines from the Gulf is extreme seasonality. In winter there are no passengers, in summer you could even fill an A380.
09:30

Great opportunity for 13 extra aviation experts of B&H to get employed by Qatar Airways !!!
09:32

It will be interesting to see how FZ responds to this.
09:32

Sarajevo will definitely have 900,000 passengers in 2017 unless there is fog again all through winter.

Ciji good work ??? Dosle kompanije same jer je trenutno Sarajevo glavna atrakcija Zaljevskih zemalja, a ovi samo koordinirali. Sta ce biti good work u zimu kad najmanje 4 od njih odu ?!?!? Mislim da ni kod Wizza i Budimpeste nemaju velike zasluge osim u cjenkanju sa Madzarima.
09:35
Anonymous said…
Qatar Airways doesn't really worry about profits so its safe to say they will stay in all ex-Yu markets regardless. This gives them enough time to develop the route. Also, since Qatar is hosting the 2022 world cup they want to practically fly everywhere by then.
09:37
Anonymous said…
Mark my words their next destination in ex-Yu will be Pristina.
09:40
Anonymous said…
Točno to! SJJ je možda najlošije vođena ZL na prostoru ex-yu
09:41
Anonymous said…
Possibly, but I think Ljubljana is next up.
09:44
Anonymous said…
Sarajevo schedule is pretty much the same as in Skopje and all other ex-Yu cities so people can catch onward flights to Australia.
09:47

SJJ nije ZL vec Aerodrom.
09:48

Any special introductory price ex Sarajevo? Can't find any.
09:50

Would it not have been better to go daily right away and fly with routing DOH-SKP-SJJ?
09:51
Anonymous said…
It says that tickets will be on sale later in the week. They haven't started yet.
09:51
Anonymous said…
That would not be competitive against Flydubai that flies to both cities nonstop.
09:54
Anonymous said…
Plus then it wouldn't fit into QR's Australia departure or arrival wave.
09:58
Anonymous said…
I think they will cover PRN through SKP similar to LJU with ZAG.
10:00
Anonymous said…
same in SKP, total Star Alliance dominance
10:01

With QR starting seasonal ops. I would not be surprised if we see Dubrovnik next year.

And absolute Wizz Air dominance :D
10:09

Perhaps western European airlines have underestimated SJJ.

Alen Šćuric Purger said…
They are desperate to put planes that are stored because of ban to ME destinations, in any possible operation. It is cheaper than to have them grounded. Even if that means opening route in less then one month from selling tickets. Look just how unplaned and urgent they upgrade ZAG route to 14 per week.

10:18
Anonymous said…
I'm sure these flights will work out well. The touristic potential is growing from month to month and numbers of tourists increase constantly.
10:22
Anonymous said…
QR is becoming the new TK. Flying to as many cities in the world as they possibly can.
10:25
Anonymous said…
Al Baker even said last year or in 2015 that only about 50% of their routes were profitable, 20% break even and the rest were unprofitable.
10:26
Anonymous said…
If BiH can sell itself to Kuwaiti tourists successfully, what's to say that it cannot do the same with Qatar? There already is visa liberalization for Qatari passport holders. I think this route has potential.
10:29
Anonymous said…
Yes, it seems some plans were rushed ahead over suddenly many available 320s. It will take some time for the market to pick up, but presumably TK and EK (in ZAG), FZ/TK in BEG and TK in SJJ/SKP will take unexpected hit in the process. Especially seeing EK already decreasing ops in ZAG with QR actually now more likely to go double daily full time. Inflexibility of EK due to wide body only could become a nightmare for them during winter here in ZAG.....too much capacity and too low frequency compared to competition (QR and TK, but mostly QR) that uses much more adequate equipment for the market. QR will in that case surely aim to go for a kill....
10:29
Anonymous said…
Route profitability is not that simple; airlines that live on connections do not look at it indiviudally, but with effect to other routes. For instance, DOH BKK can be losing, but makes CDG, MAD profitable etc...P2P carriers look at it individually while airlines like EK/QR/EY and similar definitely always look wider, as their business plan is very different. SJJ itself can be big time loser, but the effect on other routes outweighs it.
10:33
Anonymous said…
Obviously many are not aware of the potential that Balkan has. Bosnia has one of the highest tourism growths in the world and various profiles of tourist that are visiting it for different reasons.
10:34
Anonymous said…
If they launch LJU then it will be the end of EK in ZAG. QR has smaller planes so it's more flexible but if EK loses the Slovenian passengers then it will be a big hit for them.
10:35
Anonymous said…
Except for Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt :D
10:43
Anonymous said…
It will be interesting to see how Qatar will perform to Sarajevo without the ability to transfer passengers to key Middle East markets because of the ban.
10:43
Anonymous said…
Every day every night same wish, end of EK in Zagreb.
10:48
Anonymous said…
Yes! I think it is the biggest number of employment opportunities offered in aviation in Bosnia in the last 10 years!
11:12
Anonymous said…
I'm happy they are finally starting flights to Sarajevo and I hope there won't be more delays. They really treated this route poorly. Cancelled it 3 times, even started ticket sales and then suspended it. If it were an ex-Yu airline doing that people here would be kicking and screaming.
11:15
Anonymous said…
How many times per week will Fly dubai fly to Sarajevo this winter?
11:20
Anonymous said…
They have loaded a Sarajevo destination guide on their website so flights will probably be loaded today or tomorrow.
11:21
Anonymous said…
They originally planned 4 per week but have gone for 3 per week in the end. I think this time it is final and flights will definitely start.
11:23

Is there a big Bosnian diaspora in Australia?
11:24
Anonymous said…
I ment legacy carriers
11:25
Anonymous said…
Around 40,000 people but this statistic is blurred because the question asks where they were born in the census and many of those are Bosnian Serbs who exclusively fly to Belgrade, visit family in Serbia and then go by car or bus to Bosnia.
11:34
Anonymous said…
I know QR announced Sarajevo last year but would we have seen it launched now if the Qatar crisis didn't happen?
11:35
Anonymous said…
3x per week.
11:35
Anonymous said…
They have done the same with Prague. Launching flights next month and loaded them just a week ago in the system.
11:36

Probably would have been moved until 2018. SJJ wasn't a priority for them.
11:43

11:52

Also those from Banja Luka end up flying on EY and JU to BNX.
11:52
Anonymous said…
And it seems like that ban will be kept on until at least the end of the year.
11:55
Anonymous said…
Yeah especially since demand for these gulf airline on flights to Sarajevo are generated within the gulf itself which is not the case with other ex-Yu destinations.
11:59

It's the same everywhere because it is their departure wave. The planes come back at the same time since all of the ex-yu destinations have more or less the same flight times.
12:22
Anonymous said…
Me too. Should be much over 7%.
12:29
Anonymous said…
Well, ex YU is ideal for 320 which they have abundance of...and many of new destinations are wide body doable only. So, it wouldn't be a total surprise to see LJU in a couple of months if Qatar leaves GCC.

Anonymus 10:35, Slovenes are just a part of their passengers. This myth of the Slovenians filthy rich and traveling all around the world is funny and not true.
14:02
Anonymous said…
Well, ZAG has more than one daily, so that's why, so it is connected to both DOH banks.
14:09
Anonymous said…
Makes sense that it's not the same given that ZAG has the greatest demand to the East
14:23
Anonymous said…
Anon 2.02

So that's why Qatar, Emirates and flydubai all courted the Slovenian market when they launched their ZAG flights. Also flydubai said it themselves that Slovenes made up more than 20% of their passengers
14:25
SM said…
SJJ is one of the rare places in exYu that should be able to smooth out seasonality very nicely considering all the ski resorts that are practically half our drive from the airport. Unfortunately they never managed to develop them properly even with the Olympics and of course the war didn't help.
14:27
Anonymous said…
Zagreb has the least competition to the East thereby double-daily flights on some days by QR.
14:31

Another jealous Anon (2.31) who purposely didn't mention EK and its state of the art B777 in ZAG. It's ok, one day it will come to BEG... be patient, it's just another decade. LOL

Starting tomorrow, BEG will get charter flights from IKA operated by Qeshm Air's A320. These charters are organized by a local tour operator called Big Blue.

Things are looking up for Belgrade and this is a step closer to reaching those 5.5, maybe even 5.6 million passengers.

Also, in the first six months, INI welcomed 150.198 passengers.

Let me add that Arkia has finally loaded their own BEG flights into the system:

of course they courted the market as it gravitates towards ZAG and none of them serves LJU. Any passenger counts, but if Slovenia market had such potential to be make it or break it, then you would have at least seen 2 weekly FZ there. That doesn't say it is not important, but definitely not the prime target. Anyway, let's see if all of these new developments bring QR to LJU.

Skopje has ONE MILLION passengers MORE than SA. And Qatar goes four weekly in SKP. Its not the same.

I was talking about the schedule. Take a chill pill.

With Sarajevo probably ending around 930 000 passengers this year, and Tuzla around 490 000 (Mostar and Banja Luka are not worth mentioning), how likely is it that Bosnian market will outperform the Slovenian one in terms of passenger numbers? Could it happen this year, or potentially next year, as Bosnian airports will probably continue growing?
16:02

So the schedule its not the same because SKP will have more flights to DOHA. That's why its NOT the same.

Schedule means TIMES which are almost the same.

I wonder if LX could have operated three weekly with their C-series.

Doubt it. LJU is experiencing strong growth and will reach 1.7 this year.

What's good is that Bosnia has overtaken Macedonia, so that's at least something.

Anomymus 2:25, you wrote that "if they launch LJU that will be the end of EK in ZG". And then "20% of their passengers...". So 20% would be the end of EK in ZAG? :D And if there is such a huge demand from LJU, how come you still don't have carriers flying to the ME? Maybe now you'll get QR, so you can be happy :)

Oh really? I thought Skopje + Ohrid were performing better than Sarajevo + Tuzla? That´s nice to hear, finally Bosnia will have an increase in the share when it comes to overall numbers of passengers in ex-Yu. :)

Sarajevo Runway is too short for B777 or A350/A380. Might be able to handle half empty DC-10-30 or A330, but that's the limit of the Runway. 2500m simply ain't enough.

Dude, BEG has an A330 based there which is as much 'state-of-the-art' don't worry.

SJJ will quietly beat SKP. Same for INI. No extra Ryanair flights this Xmas

I don't mind when people share 'unrelated' news, it's interesting especially when it's from countries not too far from our region.

It's not against this portal's rules. If you mind it find yourself a blog exclusively for ex-YU.

Qatar is also non-exyu company, so nobody should mention them.

Only mention the world's best airlines, like Air Serbia, Croatia and Adria Airways and the busiest and the best airports in the world, only in exyu.

Free speech and all that.

The difference is when Qatar is launching flights to ex-Yu then it should be mentioned. @8.10 this is a blog exclusively for ex-Yu so I don't think he has to go and find anything. You should.

P.s. Nisam onaj anonymous gore, niti često komentiram, ali na takvu slabo prikrivenu mržnju moram reagirati. I zato da, bit će za nas uvijek zračna luka Sarajevo, koja se nalazi u sarajevskoj županiji.
