Zagreb Airport anticipates more long haul flights

Zagreb Airport expects to secure more long haul flights in the coming period as both its management and the Croatian government seek to improve connectivity to far-away markets. Following a successful showing at the recent World Routes summit, where the most senior representatives from airlines, airports and tourism authorities met, planned and discussed new and existing global air services, Croatia's busiest airport anticipates securing nonstop flights to the United States, which have been in the works for some time. The development comes after Air Canada Rouge became the latest airline to announce services to Zagreb, which are to commence from Toronto next June and operate four times per week on a seasonal summer basis.

The Croatian Minister for Tourism, Gari Cappelli, has said that talks are currently underway with a number of carriers. "The Ministry's strategic goal is to develop Croatia as a destination which is accessible to various airlines, particularly before and after the height of the summer season. We are directing a part of our funds towards closer cooperation with airlines, which will result in more flights to all of our airports. We are turning towards the Far East and the Middle East. Since January, we have been in talks with a number of large global and European carriers, as well as tour operators. I am certain that the result of these talks will be visible next year with a strong increase in visitors from non-traditional markets", Mr Cappelli said recently. He added that flights to the US are expected to commence from Zagreb next year, initially on a seasonal summer basis. In addition, the Minister recently met with representatives from Emirates to discuss further cooperation and joint promotion on particular markets.

Zagreb Airport ad targeting airlines

As part of its efforts to attract new long haul flights, Zagreb Airport has rolled out an incentives programme aimed at airlines operating services longer than seven hours. Such carriers are exempt from paying any landing fees at Zagreb during the first year, 50% during the second year and 25% during the third year if the route is run at least thirteen times in any given six-month period on a scheduled basis. Furthermore, airlines operating such flights are exempt from 40% of the passenger service charge during the first year, 20% during the second and 10% during the third year. The airport has further rolled out supplementary long haul incentives, which are also aimed at reducing fees for operating carriers.

Not sure about new US flights, would be nice, but I am somewhat skeptical US flights can be secured before 2020.

There was a possibility with Air Serbia 5th freedom via Zagreb to NYC, but Air Serbia in deep financial wows we can forget any chance of that.

LOT might be willing to base an B767 in Zagreb to do NYC flights, like they did in Budapest, however this is unlikely to happen before 2020.

Delta launching NYC-Zagreb and Atlanta - Zagreb flights on a seasonal basis is a possibility but not before 2020.

Nearly 400 000 US Visitors are expected to visit Croatia this year, 500 000 next year, so there's a need for a direct link, however don't think it'll happen before 2020.

Remember how some predicted on here that EK will even send its A380 to ZAG? Seems like someone overestimated their effect, especially since they didn't contribute as much to the growth of the airport.

BEG with just two additional weekly long-haul flights had a slightly lower growth in terms of percentages. With all the new flights ZAG should have had 20%+ like SKP did when Wizz started flying there.

I personally think that ZAG should be congratulated for having Emirates. It's a big thing and nobody thinks less of the airport if the flights is operated 4,5 or 7 times per week. It's still a B777 op which is fantastic for any airport in this region. Don't take things so personally.

Such double stanards of some people here, unbelievable

      Delete
    32. Anonymous10:27

Not really because that was heavily discussed when it was reported here that the flights would be cancelled because of aircraft maintenance back in May. Also I remember absolute hysteria here when Air Serbia announced it would fly 3-4 times per week during the winter which was down on initial plan from 5 per week. Also I doubt some tour operator from Serbia had info about EK reducing a flight to Zagreb. Look closer to home. And also refresh your memory.

In May 2017. Also I don't exactly see that anyone said a reduction of one flight per week was a catastrophy or disaster. My closer to home comment refereed to the original poster who said that they were informed as a tour operator, so it is unlikely to be someone from Serbia, as you labelled them straight away because you didn't like what was written. My assumption is that it's someone from Croatia or Slovenia since they sell these flights, hence closer to home. Lastly how on earth am I blinded by "hatry"?!?

In Emirates it is still 5pw during February. You can book flight on -2-4567

In summer there is every day flight in their system.

7pw in summer and 5pw in winter with 777-300ER is more than impressive. That is 22.000 passengers per month during summer and 16.000 passengers per month during winter.

If they will cut it to 4pw, and even to 3pw in winter that will be impressive. 4pw should be very good in February which is slow month in region. Most of companies make extra cuts in February. Remember huge cuts last February by Air Serbia?

But for now it is in system 5pw during February and 7pw in summer. You can buy ticket on those frequencies in this moment.

      Delete
    39. Anonymous10:51

Once again Purger misses the point of the discussion. No one said they have cut it but that there is a possibility of them doing so.

Also, why are you immediately using ASL as an example of February cuts? Why not BA and OK in ZAG last February?

Also some on this forum said there would be 4pw in summer and that in this moment you can book 7pw.

We all know there was OK cut in ZAG last February (can not remember about BA cuts as far as I know they had 6pw all winter, but maybe I am wrong). But those were just few flights.

Air Serbia had huge cuts in February. And for sure it is much better example how February is slow in region and how companies reacts.

Can't see NYC flights happening any time soon, I would love to see it happen but it won't.

Korean Air as there are over 400 000 Korean visitors to Croatia, ANA or JAL as they used to fly to Zagreb and there are over 170 000 Japanese visitors to Croatia, numbers will go up.
China Eastern, Air China or China Southern might be also looking to add Zagreb at some point as number of Chinese visitors to Croatia is going up sharply, 44% yoy growth, 165000 expected this year, 240 000 next year and by 2020 over 400 000 Chinese visitors to Croatia.

Air India might happen but not before 2020, as number of Indian visitors is also going up sharply, 65000 expected this year, 90-100 000 in 2018, 130-140 000 in 2019 and 200 000 in 2020.
Air Transat might add Montreal to Zagreb, and stop Toronto flights due to Air Canada flights.

Come 2018 we'll have following long routes,

Dubai with Emirates, Toronto with Air Canada. Qatar might be considered long route as well, but they're flying A321 on the route, so.

    18. The numner of long haul passengers in Zagreb is growing rapidly - Americans, Canadians, Australians, Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, Thais, Middle Easterners...etc. Not just tourists, but business people as well. Zagreb is the capital, the economic, cultural and financial center of Croatia. These passengers definitely need direct routes. The diaspora needs them too. The potential is there...no doubt about it. A mere couple of years ago, ZAG barely had 4-5 months out of a year with over 200,000 pax. This year (only 2 years later) it will likely have 5 months with over 300,000 pax. It has literally doubled the pax growth rate within a single year. Those are the facts. That's not to say that we still don't have a lot of work to do in accommodating large numbers of short and mid range travelers...from Scandinavia and the UK in particular, but from other, new, non-traditional markets as well.

Michael, give us an example why was there an actual need for Air Canada Rouge flight to Zagreb. Do you have any numbers like LF and passenger O&D numbers to show that Air Transat twice per week route was not enough and there was an actual need for additional 4 flight per week with Air Canada Rouge? Let's stick to facts and numbers.

What counts as a tourists? Does that include Gastarbeiters with German citizenship coming back to visit family in Croatia? Are transit passengers travelling through Croatia on autobahn and going to other destination also counted? Are cruise ship passengers visiting Dubrovnik for one day shore excursion also counted as visitors? What prozent of tourists staying at least overnight come by airplane, and what by auto/bus?

      @AnonymousOctober 9, 2017 at 10:31 AM

I's say 17.5 million expected this year, we don't have final figures for first 9 months, but numbers are good, 12-15% yoy growth in arrivals and stays. Number of cruise ships declined by 5-6%, but that is ok, it is expected to happen as all traditional Cruise line destinations in Med have seen similar drop. However, number of stays is impressive, we could hit 105 million nights in 2017. Revenue of €11.5 billion is very likely, or increase by 10% in tourism revenue on the last year.

Next year, 20 million visitors are very much a possibility.

      @AnonymousOctober 9, 2017 at 3:21 PM

No gastrabayter isn't considered a visitor or a tourist, although they do spend a lot more than tourist.

Cruiseline shore visitors are considered tourist and are counted as such, however they contribute with 0 overnight stays, so they're least desired form of visitors in financial terms. Croatia gets around 700k million such visitors, in 2016, however in total number they're not included,

In 2016 Croatia was visited by 15.6 million tourist who spent 92.5 million nights, however adding cruise line visitors, total number rose to 16.3 million.
      https://www.croatiaweek.com/record-2016-16-3-million-visitors-to-croatia/

However, nautical/cruise-line visitors are not put in final figures as we can't measure their expenditure.

So this year, 17.5 million visitors and add 700k to that number for total of 18.2 million.

The same visitors would normally visit Dubrovnik, Split and even Zadar, so counting them as multiple visitors give you wrong impression too, so this is another reason why they're never counted.

Way Croatia gets is numbers, on border entry which is all digitized and hotels, apartments, camps all need to update ministry of tourisam on a daily basis

There are many business that don't report "friends" and "relatives" as visitors, so true number is much greater in stays and visitor numbers. as much as 20% greater than actual numbers.

Also season now lasts from May 1st to October 31st on the coast and in Zagreb from Jan 1st to December 31st

17.5 million visitors expected this year, 100-105 million stays, revenue of €10.7-11.5 billion expected.

Zagreb - 1.35 million visitors, 2.4 million nights Zagreb currently has 50 hotels and 45 hostels on offer in total just over 3.5 million nights on offer.

City will need to build new hotels and hostels fast !!! It won't be able to cope with numbers otherwise come 2020, when 2 million visitors are expected and 3.7 million nights.

As destinations go, Zagreb is growing at 11-15% yoy rate.
