Croatia Airlines and Air Serbia plan for 2018

The former Yugoslavia's two busiest national carriers have unveiled some of their plans for the coming year, during which the International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicts continued upturn for the aviation industry with greater profitability, propelled by positive factors including worldwide economic growth.

Croatia Airlines enters 2018 with a new management, albeit temporary. The carrier's new acting CEO, Jasmin Bajić, will lead the company until at least May 2018 when the Croatian government will decide whether to extend his term or look for new leadership. Next year, Croatia Airlines plans to further expand its network in order to keep up with increasing demand for leisure destinations. The carrier says that additional growth will be fuelled by the country's thriving tourism industry. "Croatia has been a tourist hit on a global scale for several years, not only during the summer season but also in winter. In accordance with these trends and our capacities, in the future, we plan to further expand our European network of destinations", the company said. So far, it has scheduled new seasonal services between Split and Copenhagen for next year and is considering introducing flights between Zagreb and Mostar from June 2018. Furthermore, it will operate a series of charters from Split to Lulea and Umea in Sweden, Molde in Norway and Kuopio in Finland from mid-May until the end of September.

Croatia Airlines further intends on expanding its technical maintenance operations for foreign airlines and widening the existing capacity of the technical centre in Zagreb. Its profitable maintenance division has proved as a significant source of revenue over the years. The carrier is also planning new business partnerships with other airlines, in particular with fellow Star Alliance members. To that effect, last month Lufthansa began codesharing on two domestic services operated by Croatia Airlines, between Zagreb and Dubrovnik, as well as Zagreb and Split, while Air India added its codes and flight numbers onto the Croatian carrier's services from Split to Zagreb, Frankfurt and Rome. In March, Air India and Croatia Airlines signed their first wide-ranging codeshare agreement.

Air Serbia has noted it will continue investing in tailoring the passenger experience, which, in turn, allows it to boost ancillary revenue streams. In a statement to the "Elevate" publication, the airline's CEO, Dane Kondić, noted, "In 2018 we are going to expand our travel options even further to allow guests to personalise their experience with Air Serbia. In fact, we are working on some exciting developments right now that will be introduced next year, but I won't spoil the surprise". The airline is expected to continue evolving its business model to allow it to continue lowering its costs following a string of similar measures this year. Destination-wise, the carrier is unlikely to make major changes to its network as it looks to improve its load factor and ease seasonality. Mr Kondić noted earlier this year that, "The focus is going to be on internal consolidation and strengthening the business before we go on to any major further growth. We have to get better returns on what we have". The planned arrival of two Airbus A320neo aircraft, scheduled for the second half of 2018, remains uncertain.

U javnim garažama u centru grada nema jednog jedinog mjesta. Čak i onim najudaljenijim (poput Tuškanca).

      @Beduin,

      @Anonymous 9:47

Nope. I think it's depressing they aren't changing anything as in no new routes, new aircraft etc. when ALL other airlines are. They are missing out, what will happen when growth slows globally?

I think they made a HUGE mistake, from the get go they should've gone after a hub + low cost model, like Southwest Airlines in the US, basically what they have now but NO special "boutique airline" addons (bs), they need LOW FARES, it's what attracts people especially price sensitive ones (Balkans). Air Serbia has a bad image for many people because they are the most expensive options to/ from Beograd. Ridiculous prices are 300 USD Beograd - Vienna next summer while Austrian is around 155.... London double what it costs with Wizz, etc.

I don't see ANY growth in their growth and it makes me upset.

    5. They simply don't get it.

For most of their destinations they keep spring or summer prices poisonly expensive and hope someone will buy them.

When they figure out they have almost empty planes they go with some "special action" few weeks before summer season beginning. At that time most of the people already planned their trips with other companies.
And it is repeated on the same way every single year.

      Sadly.

We know they will open Split-Copenhagen. They negotiate for Zagreb-Dublin, Zagreb-Istanbul (in cooperation with Turkish) and Zagreb-Mostar, one route in East and one in North Europe and two in region (I can not tell you which one, I promised not to).

Im sure 2 x week YYZ should work for them. Start in November when the season is low anyway, theyll have smaller loss than just parking it in BEG 4 days a week, and some premium from christmas/new years travellers. Keep it during the summer with 4 pw JFK and Im sure theyll bring in some cash and with good utilisation of the aircraft.

To lepo zvuci. Ipak mrsava krava malo mleka daje... U nadi dolazi Nova 2018 godins. U njoj nada za rekapitulizaciju Er Srbije. Pocetak rada Koncesionara na aerodromu Nikola Tesla. Dogradnju i otvaranje Morave i Ponikvi. Prosirenje Konstantina Velikog. Ako drzava nemoze, privatizacija moze. Vreme snaznijeg razvoja civilne avijacije dolazi. Drzavnog, privatnog, ili kombinovanog? Kako Vlada Srbije sprovede.
Stotak dana do Sidneja. Ceka me 78 let. Kada se vratim, bice cetiri putnicka aerodroma i snaznija nacionalna avio kompanija. Kakva je drzava bez ozbiljnosti i zivot bez nade? Nikakav. Radovan, Kraljevo.

I do see a lot of criticism directed towards JU and they certainly do deserve some of it but I got to agree with Kondic here. You can't deal with seasonality by opening up 4-5 seasonal routes during the summer. The airline (and market) obviously isn't strong enough to sustain these flights year round. So they should work on what they already have, build it up, and then try to look at new routes.

With exception of JFK and CRJ900 summer fling, they have been doing that since 2014 but growth is minimal. It is not enough to wait for GDP to grow and Serbia to join EU to expect organic growth, while competitors are growing faster in current conditions.

One tiny glimpse of what Air Serbia could offer in 2018 is visible in request for BEG airport upgrades. This could be implemented in time for high season and looks unrelated to concession outcome. Proposed map of T2:

Couple of bag tag machines for those who did online check in, about 10 self serve kiosks for those that didn't (red squares) and what looks like space for 4 regular check in desks now dedicated to bag self drop off. Five years later, Air Serbia and BEG are finally getting up to date check in options.

It is not clear if there will be automated bag drop machines or just dedicated bag drop desks?

Etihad is now becoming a hybrid carrier so Air Serbia is definitleyl going down the same path and like people said buy on board meals will be next.

Etihad Airways is introducing a limited number of buy on board items on selected routes, which it says will be “in addition to its complimentary inflight service and hospitality offering”.

Economy passengers on flights to and from London, Paris and all Australian destinations can now purchase cold brewed coffee from Coffee Planet, priced at US$4 a glass, while economy customers on all long-haul and ultra long-haul services (except those to the US) can buy glasses of Piper-Heidsieck Cuvee Brut NV champagne for US$8.

Meanwhile travellers in all cabins on ultra long-haul flights (except those to the US) can purchase Christian Lacroix male or female amenity kits with Omorovicza products for US$22, or Christian Lacroix-branded sleepwear for US$35.

Finally from January, again on ultra long-haul flights except those to the US, a paid-for snack box (prices not disclosed) will be available, “featuring both sweet and healthy snacks to suit guests’ differing tastes and cravings”.

It’s not clear whether the above means the end of free amenity kits for business class passengers on ultra long-haul flights – currently Etihad’s website says:

“In business class, you’ll receive an amenity kit on our ultra-long-haul flights and long-haul overnight flights. Our current limited edition amenity kit is inspired by some of the iconic cities from our network. Each kit contains a customised Luxe City Guide and Scaramouche and Fandango skincare and comfort kit.

“On long-haul day flights, dental kits including a toothbrush and toothpaste, sleep packs including socks and an eyeshade, earplugs and shaving kits are available on request.”

It looks like the new paid-for options will be just the start of an expanding buy on board menu, with the carrier saying that “We will monitor guest satisfaction and aim to expand the range of items for sale in the future”.

Earlier this year Etihad removed its free business class chauffeur service at all international destinations, as well as adding the ability for economy passengers to “bid” for up to three empty seats next to theirs, and paid-for entry into its lounges worldwide.

In July the carrier announced net losses of nearly $1.9 billion for 2016, as fuel hedging losses and financial exposure to equity partners including Alitalia and Air Berlin hit the carrier.

Is anyone else getting tired of Kondić constantly splurting out long big words that really mean nothing? The guy is a master at saying absolutely nothing, but in a very fancy way.

Air Serbia is on the right path. They need to stabilize before expanding again. As if Croatia Airlines is any better by adding a couple of new lines when they do not invest in their fleet and they have to sell slots at prominent airports. Air Serbia has much better potential with Belgrade Airport being a dominant one in the region and that will help Air Serbia grow organically in the coming years.

So cost cutting, lowering service levels and closing check-in facilities is now called tailoring and personalizing experience. Zemljo otvori se. Here in Germany they have no standing at all with the very high O/D fares. LH is almost on every flight considerably cheaper and if you are ready to fly via ZRH or VIE with LH/LX or LH/OS sometimes even cheaper than Wizz from secondary airports. So tell me one good reason why I should fly FRA-BEG on ASL?????Even transfer rates are now higher then with TK or AZ. FRA/TLV or FRA/LCA. So why for heavens sake one should fly via BEG. Something terribly goes wrong....I simply don't get it!

My mother flies 4-5 times per year and I am always arranging the tickets for her. Basically she is pro-ASL, but as every retired person she's looking to save every penny she can. So, I know the market and the fares. Sorry if the truth hurts!
