Adria Airways begins major expansion

Adria Airways will today commence one of its biggest network expansions to date with seven new routes to be launched this summer season. Despite scheduling inaugural flights from Ljubljana to Sofia, Bucharest and Hamburg for today, the airline has pushed back the latter two, as new crew members undergo training. Instead, only the service to Sofia will be launched this afternoon, with Bucharest to follow on March 27 and Hamburg on April 1. Services to Geneva and Dusseldorf, as well as seasonal flights to Dubrovnik and Brač, will be introduced over the next month. Initially, all of the airline's new routes were to run with the fifty-seat Saab 2000 turboprop aircraft, previously operated by its now defunct subsidiary Adria Airways Switzerland. However, their arrival has been delayed with entry into service not expected before June. Until then, all of the airline's new flights will be operated by a mix of Bombardier CRJ700 and CRJ900 aircraft. The carrier recently added two newly leased CRJ900s to its fleet.

Launch of new Sofia service, Ljubljana Airport

Commenting on the new route launches, the company said, "At Adria Airways, we want to maintain our position as a reliable airline and good market player. By introducing these new connections we will also be opening up new opportunities for both business and tourism". It added. "Adria Airways will consistently continue to improve its offerings and has ambitious plans for 2018. The year will be dedicated to opening more connections between cities in Europe and the Balkan region. With the implementation of novelties and optimisations, Adria Airways is continuously committed to improving the travel experience and offering the most convenient way of travelling in the region".

Adria's Chief Commercial Officer, Christian Schneider, said, "This year will be key for Adria Airways and this is why we are happy to follow our growth strategy by launching seven new destinations out of Ljubljana. This is good for the market, this is good for the customer, because it gives more variety, more choice. We have seen the demand already in 2017 and this is why we believe that 2018 with seven new destinations will be good for the market". Adria carried over 1.2 million passengers in 2017, representing an increase of 10% on the year before. It expects for the strong growth to continue throughout 2018.

Their reputation is really taking a beating. So many flights are being rescheduled, delayed, cancelled.... and now they do the same with the inaugural flights...

Anyone know the loads or which new route is performing best?

Good luck Adria! Impressive expansion for one season.

The company is bearly able to cope with its current schedule and the flight punctuallity sucks. They perform tripplets (did someone realized how the do point to point?), constant usage of acmi’s even without informing passengers in advance. Since the beginning is all talk no actions, quazi business maker new owners with a sale of a national airline below the table. Overall they hired A Chief Commercial from the company they were able to dive in 3 months and the story with Saabs is a discrace. Simply, extremely poor management, even worst leadership and poor know how on the top of bad behavoir. This product lost even that little what left from the past.

I am afraid, their reputation on Skytrax is declining:

http://www.airlinequality.com/airline-reviews/adria-airways/

People complain about delays.
10:02
Anonymous said…
I don't understand how they were so unprepared for this expansion?
10:07
Anonymous said…
They have been leasing planes from Carpatair, Croatia Airlines and Trade Air lately.
10:13

It's good to see some positive news coming from Slovenia again with both Adria and Ljubljana Airport recovering.
10:14
Anonymous said…
Inexperienced management.
10:14
Anonymous said…
True. Good news coming from Adria lately. I hope the growth will translate into profits too.
10:25
SKP said…
today and on Thurs. they are combining their PRN and SKP afternoon flights in a triangle route LJU-PRN-SKP-LJU
10:26
Anonymous said…
Will all the new routes be year round? (except of course Brac and Dubrovnik).
10:27
Anonymous said…
Terrible from a passenger's perspective.
10:28
Anonymous said…
Exactly anon 10.07. How could they not have trained their crew on time. They have known they will be adding 7 routes in late March for months now.
10:41
Anonymous said…
Yes I believe so
10:42
Anonymous said…
Air Serbia is doing the same with ZG and LJ lately. Of course, without notifying passengers in advance.

All the best to Adria, but if Air Serbia failed with a similar strategy and plenty of support at the time, don’t know what Adria will achieve.

All the best to
10:45
Anonymous said…
The difference being that Air Serbia did it on that one single route in February and start of March. Since then the flights have been operating normally (separately).
10:51
Anonymous said…
If they are successful they will keep it during the winter.
10:52
Anonymous said…
So out of a 3 new routes planned for today only 1 launched. Great.
10:55
Anonymous said…
there are no other triangle routes planned except on those two days
10:55
Anonymous said…
They will get s5aap and s5aaz back
11:12
Anonymous said…
Yes but there were all through March on other routes.
11:12
Anonymous said…
Interestingly they will also use CRJ900s on some Brac flights.
11:14
Anonymous said…
It's unfortunate really. They had a good reputation.
11:15
Anonymous said…
Next up Adria goes transatlantic :D
11:18
Anonymous said…
Yes. With Saab 2000 ;)
11:22
Anonymous said…
They have actually flown TATL in the past. They were the first Yugoslav airline to fly charters to the US.
11:22
Anonymous said…
I am actually quite happy with the planned schedule. Having in mind Adria's finances from a few years ago this is going in the right direction.
11:25
Anonymous said…
It's not a problem of training, the problem is finding people who would work for these salaries, where there are better jobs available at the moment. Other for Slovenians, Adria is not really an airline many people wish to work for.
11:25
Anonymous said…
High demand or lack of equipment?
11:25
Anonymous said…
A big improvement on before. All the best to Adria.
11:33
Anonymous said…
Thanks to this expansion, LJU will probably have 15% passenger growth this year.
11:34
Anonymous said…
BWK is the best
11:35
Anonymous said…
Salaries are competitive, the problem is communication or better, arogant behaviour.
11:44
Anonymous said…
Fraport should rather fix that mess in the terminal first.
11:46
Anonymous said…
Same with some zrh flights via muc....
11:48
Anonymous said…
It has been reported many times now by this site about the two new CRJ-900 (S5-AFB and AFC), however they have never entered into service, and there is no trace of them on FR24. Do you know when they will start operating? Instead Fokker 100s of Carpatair and Trade Air are flying for JP quite a lot
11:56

German management and unfortunately in todays aviation world, more and more master and bachelor bureaucrats, but with no experience in aviation and sometimes not even work experience. Those guys have no clue about practical work life, but its them to make decisions. I hve my personal experience in terms of that with the LH group and its sometimes just frustrating to see how unprofessional and irresponsible leadership sometimes can be

Schedules are made in a way that the following triangle route can be made;: Ljubljana _ Bucharest _ Sofia _ Ljubljana (or Bucharest first Sofia second).
12:12

or Sofia first Bucharest second
12:14

S5-AAK has a seating capacity of 86 seats meaning:
LJU-SOF: 73% LF
SOF-LJU: 22% LF

Tomorrow's flight to SOF will be operated by CR7. But hey, LF from LJU are not bad at all.
12:18
Anonymous said…
They seem to be expanding a lot in LJU. This is a positive strategy because they are reducing ops in other countries and expanding in LJU, which is very good for Slovenia
12:24
Anonymous said…
Adria is on its way to recovery and is looking more and more as serious player in ex-Yu (again).
12:33
Anonymous said…
The load from LJU is very good. I assume around 5 pax were officials from Adria but that's still more than the capacity of the Saab2000 which was planned to operate this route. SOF-LJU not so great especially if a couple of passengers are non revenue from Adria but it's just the first day.

They were cancelling flights prior to the 'expansion' (a week ago), and now you expect us to believe, that this is going to go through normally?

I have a hunch that 4K is going to restructure the company in the following months - they will slash many routes, cancel some of the lease agreements for the airplanes and basically become full time wet lease company. At least their HR management is going in this direction - they are hiring foreigners who basically don't care about the collective agreement - in case of a major restructuring (which will be accompanied by layoffs) you can keep the foreign work force, slash salaries and keep the company alive for a couple of months more.
13:12

The SOF and OTP routes will work out, no doubt. I even predict they will be year round destinations.
If you remember well, JP was supposed to launch flights to SOF back in spring 2009 but unfortunately never happened:

It took them 9 years.

They are privately owned and operated entity, so they can hire whoever they want (provided they meet the requirements) and each employee can decide whether they want to join the union or not.

It's usually more a case of locals sticking around for the inevitable doom as they have more to loose if they move somewhere else.
