Niš Constantine the Great Airport's General Manager, Vladica Djurdjanović, has been controversially relieved of his duties by local authorities as the city's ruling party attempts to transfer ownership of the airport to the state government. Mr Djurdjanović oversaw the rapid development of the airport, including the arrival of Wizz Air, Ryanair and Swiss International Air Lines, as well as the overhaul of the airport's facilities. The city assembly must now confirm Mr Djurdjanović's dismissal. However, the assembly has not held a session since plans to transfer the airport's ownership sparked city-wide protests and split the ruling party. In April it was revealed that Serbia will cap passenger growth at its secondary airports on a temporary basis as part of the 25-year concession agreement for Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport with France's VINCI worth 1.2 billion euros. Despite initially denying that limitations would be imposed on the number of travellers outside the capital, the Serbian government later admitted that figures will be confined to one million passengers for each airport in the country within a 230 kilometre radius of Belgrade until Nikola Tesla Airport reaches twelve million travellers per year. However, the government argues it is unlikely for any secondary airport to get to this figure before the country's busiest achieves its target. Conversely, VINCI would be either subject to a cut in its annual concession fee to the state or the concession itself would be extended past the 25-year period, Earlier this week, the Serbian President, Aleksandar Vučić, said that a final decision on Niš Airport has not been made and that it could remain in the hands of the city authorities.

DeleteThe airport actually needs funds from the government to continue expanding. These petty Serbian political discussions where one's intellect is proportionate to the amount of anti-government talk, is pathetic. The airport is in Nis. It will remain in Nis. No matter who is pumping funds into it. And GoS can definitely pump in more than the city of Nis.

Either or without GoS, INI has a bright future. It is no longer a tertiary but rather secondary airport. The Protest itself was quite Big with crowds and crowds of unhappy people outside.
ReplyDeleteIn case W6 bases an aircraft, it will grow with 300,000 more passengers annually meaning that it will get closer to SKP.
I think INI first needs to stabilize with what it has and to work on reaching 500.000 passengers. Once that is achieved then we can discuss about a Wizz Air base in the future.

DeleteLooking how long it took Prague, Warsaw and Budapest to reach 12 million,I am not sure how Belgrade can be optimistic in their assessment and targets.
DeleteReaching 5 million is easy, for a capitol airport,reaching 12 million would take some doing. Belgrade has very few tourists, a few business travelers and very poor population that can't afford to travel much.
@annual expansion of 400 000 passengers, airport could reach 12 million pax by 2035. If growth magically increases to 600 000 passengers per year, it'll still take 12 years at that rate, that is 2030.
Are you really telling me Nis Airport can't reach 1 million pax by 2030 ? Serbian Government is most corrupt government in Europe, baring Ukrainian,Turkish and Russian governments.

A sto niko ne prica o tome da od pocetka maja nijedan duty free proizvod kupnjen na drugom aerodromu ne moze se prenjeti u tranzitu preko beogradskog aerodroma.
