Korean Air prepares for Zagreb launch

Korean Air is preparing for the launch of its new scheduled service between Seoul and Zagreb in just over two weeks, with the airline satisfied with its current sales. In a statement to EX-YU Aviation News, the carrier said, "Ticket sales and advanced booking numbers are in line with our expectations for this route and we are satisfied with its performance. We continue to promote Zagreb as our newest European gateway and are entirely focusing on commencing scheduled flights in September. After the route stabilises, we may consider to fly to destinations in Croatia other than Zagreb". Korean tour operator KAL Tours and Hanjin Travel have contributed a large share of passengers to the new scheduled flights.

The Korean carrier is still negotiating an expansion of its interline agreement with Croatia Airlines in hope of securing a codeshare agreement. Korean Air will commence its three weekly flights to Zagreb with an Airbus A330-200 jet. It will initially deploy its Boeing 777-200ER on the route for the start of the 2018/19 winter season, which begins on October 28. However, the airline will then switch to the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner as of January 2, 2019. The two aircraft seat between 248 and 269 passengers. Korean Air will operate the return service from Zagreb to Seoul via Zurich over the winter months, however, the airline has not secured rights to sell tickets on the intra-European sector. "For the time being, it is impossible to purchase tickets from Zagreb to Zurich. However, we will consider ways to make it work in the future", Korean Air told EX-YU Aviation News.

Korean Air advertisement for new Zagreb service

The Croatian Minister for Tourism, Gari Capelli, has said the new service will help boost arrivals to the country in the off-season period. "We are strengthening our reach with new and emerging markets such as China, Japan and Korea, and I am delighted to note that over the past two years we have recorded growth of over 50% from these distant markets. Our wish is to further stimulate growth outside the summer months", Mr Capelli noted. The Croatian Prime Minister, Andrej Plenković, recently said his government is negotiating the establishment of flights from Beijing and Shanghai to Zagreb, while Zagreb Airport's General Manager, Jacques Feron, added, "We anticipate to finalise talks over the arrival of a Chinese carrier because Croatia is becoming of growing interest to Chinese tourists".

During summer Emirates had 91% LF, all year 76%. They fly 8 months out of 12 with 777-300ER everyday!!! Last year they had 210.820 passengers from Zagreb. For sure that is not "bad lack"

Is this why they are downgrading the service in winter to the smaller 737?

If Emirates "didn't have luck" in Zagreb, they would have ceased the operations. On the contrary, flights are continuing to operate DAILY throughout the year. Their LF in summer is around 90 %. Now it will be the same during 3 most critical winter months, thanks to Flydubai eauipment and increased frequency which improves connectivity. The premiuim classes are also selling fine Emirates has no issues in ZAG and compared to for example first year of operations in BUD, the service is much more succesful. So stop trolling with EK "unluck" , "decrease", "catastrophy" and similar in ZAG because that is simply not the true. And I know it hurts a lot it's ZAG having Korean, Emirates and Air Canada, and soon more to come, not others in ex-yu, but you will just have to accept it and live with it

TK will be very fierce starting this winter as they will have many slots and new 787 + 350 arriving. They announced DPS and will most likely expand more in Africa.
EK will face very hard times in ZAG.
QR will most likely deploy their A321 as they used to do before.

      Ugh. Always the same story.
Yes, a good friend of mine works for Eurocontrol and he is the one that provides me with these numbers. The reason why I, and some others on here, share information is because we know how horrible it is to be an aviation fan and to be kept in the dark about the most interesting aspect of avion: passenger loads.

However, as time goes by attacks are getting more and more frequent and equally annoying. I have shared information for most airports in the region, both inside and outside the ex-YU but it seems that some on here prefer to be kept in the dark than to know the real situation out there.

As something that was supposed to be for fun has turned into something that irritates me I will do a favour to a great number of posters on here by taking a break from commenting and sharing these information.

I wish all of you a wonderful evening.

I see, it is not actually official data, but from friends's print screen sort of. Well, if you feel free to post the chart or map of the data, would be interesting, Also I was never aware of your previous statements in this regard, All I knew and heard was that you are getting data from Eurocontrol, I called Eurocontrol to find such data, they were not sure if they published such data and if they did, they must have data only for airport operators, not for the public, i.e private, however eurocontrol is a public organization financed by its members and the EU, so he was also confused why such data wouldn't be public, in short he thought they never had such data, upon me insisting they supposedly had.

My contact at Eurocontrol was one of the managers on information and planning team. Although saw one of the team contacts, mr Ivanich (I think he is Croatian), not sure if this was your contact, the one I contacted was Dutch, so we had nice chat in Dutch.

Anyhow, I wanted to know where exactly did you get your data from, however if it is from personal friend, the last thing we want you to post his printscreen as it might get him fired.

Well, I'm sure if an airline announces launching A380 to your airport, your "regional leading airport" pride will arise and you'll be telling us another story.
Just take PRG, it puts WAW and BUD to shame serving the A380 on a daily basis.

Funny how Purger never bothered to update his table of widebodies in the ex-YU region. I guess what mattered was to write how ZAG overtook BEG until BEG reclaimed the rightful first spot on the list.

Today we have over 15 weekly widebody flights into BEG yet we rarely brag about it. What matters is that ZAG tried, even if it partially fails at times as is the case with EK.

    30. Anonymous16:09

Lol 15 in 1 day...yeah right. BEG has also a large number of turboprops...ATR72, Dash 4, ATR42, which is why it is still standing at 5 million pax unlike BUD for example.

Given the large Croatian diaspora in Australia, will there be flights from PER-ZAG with the 789? I heard QF had many problems in UK because the cabin crew members were extremely tired and had few days off as a compensation...not sure they will be expanding in Europe but if they ever do, I hope they include ZAG.

There is next to no chance of ZAG-Australia. The yield would be terrible with holiday makers and the only reason LHR is successful is because it’s a high yield, premium cabin destination. Even back in the day when QF flew to BEG it was a government owned company, for the sole purpose of collecting migrants. Times have changes since then and most Aussies if not all Aussies holiday in other European cities and not visit Croatia alone. Don’t get me wrong I would love this to happen but it’s just not viable today or in medium term.

    5. Anonymous11:15

It's a pity. But maybe ZAG-SYD would work. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs believes that that there are about 150,000 Croats in Australia, whereas Croatian communities claim. This is a huge number!

BA operates with a stop in Singapore if I remember correctly. The only non-stop flight from Australia to Europe is on Qantas from Perth. They said that cargo demand was unexpectedly hard.

my Boss had a Meeting with QF yesterday. The flights LHR-PER are doing extremly well and are in black since first month. Even LHR-PER flights use less fuel than previously predicted so cargo loads LHR-PER are up to 8 tons !!
CDG will follow next year and most probably FRA in 2020.

Don't know where you found rt tickets on EK for 750 euros in September.

I'm currently looking mid September from ZAG to ICN and the cheapest option is actually Singapore Airlines via Copenhagen (codeshare with OU)! Then its Korean Air at $1,372 and then Emirates which is a dollar more expensive. Turkish Airlines, which is usually cheapest is among the most expensive.

KE will primarily serve the Korean market, then it will attract some from the broader East Asian market and may get some transfer passengers from Australia/NZ/S.E. Asia. All in all, enough of a market for this new service.

Current schedule does not allow a good connection on to ICN - ZAG from Australia/NZ/Asia. Most destinations require 1 night in SEL. Their primary pax are groups from the Korean tour operators.
