Korean Air touches down in Zagreb

Korean Air inaugurated scheduled flights between Seoul and Zagreb this morning with its 218-seat Airbus A330-200 aircraft, featuring six seats in first class, 24 in business and 188 seats in economy class. The jet arrived in the Croatian capital at approximately 15.30 local time. The airline, which has operated a handful of charters to Zagreb each year since 2010, will maintain the scheduled service three times per week on a year-round basis. During the 2018/19 winter season, which begins on October 28, the airline will run a three weekly triangle service with the routing Seoul - Zagreb - Zurich - Seoul, although it has not secured rights to sell tickets on the intra-European sector. The winter operation will be maintained with a Boeing 777-200ER jet from late October until early January and the 269-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner thereafter, until the start of the summer season in March.

Zagreb Airport marked the occasion with a press event. Korean Air is the third major airline to launch flights to the Croatian capital this year following Aegean Airlines and Air Canada Rouge. The national carrier of South Korea is said to have recorded solid bookings on the route so far with numbers peaking for the upcoming Chuseok holiday in late September, when the average cabin load factor on flights to Zagreb is already said to be 99%. "Ticket sales and advanced booking numbers are in line with our expectations for this route and we are satisfied with its performance", Korean Air said. In order to promote the new route, the airline has begun screening ads entitled "A walk in Croatia" with actress Ye Sul Park (featured below).


Korean tour operator KAL Tours and Hanjin Travel have contributed a large share of passengers to the new service. A spokesman for Korea’s top travel agency, Hana Tour, said that Croatia is emerging as one of the most promising travel destinations for South Koreans who visit Europe. Last year, 448.636 Korean holidaymakers visited Croatia, which has become increasingly popular in the country after several reality shows were filmed in places such as Dubrovnik. The Croatian Minister for Tourism, Gari Cappelli, recently said the country was looking to secure flights from four far away markets in the coming period. These include Japan, China, South Korea and the United States. "One of our main goals is to improve Croatia's air connectivity. The establishment of new flights is crucial to increasing the number of arrivals, especially from far away markets. We are particularly focusing on Japan, with which we recently signed a bilateral Air Service Agreement, but also China, South Korea and the United States, which all account for a growing number of tourists", Mr Cappelli said.

      It is a very smart move, sadly no inter-EU flights for non-EU airline it seems. Well Swiss... isn't in the EU but is part of EU structures...

      In what respect is Zagreb behind ??? Number of widebodies ??? Let me see, Zagreb has Air Transat, Air Canada, Korean air, Emirates. Soon it'll have China Eastern, ANA and longer term Delta. I'd say Zagreb is doing mightily fine.

      EK has prematurely sent a huge bird to ZAG when they should have done the same as BEG sending a smaller aircract (they did in the past) but then suddenly passed from 2-3 weekly FZ service to EK huge and difficult to fill aircraft.
      On my opinion FZ is the right aircraft for Zagreb until it reaches 6-7 million, then you can send EK big aeroplanes.
      KE has a much smaller aircraft and easier and safter to fill 218 seats, which is even lower than a Wizz A321 sent to to Skopje. So lets wait and see how the route goes.

      EK is not flying only for 3.5 months, covered by FZ, they'll be back in 2020 year round, no biggie, I looked at EK numbers posted by nemjee, and although his numbers conflict with other numbers he posted, by a fair bit, example one data shows 84000 pax on the route and other 98000pax on the route, so which one is it.

      Anyhow, data that we were presented shows EK is doing really well on the route, January, February and March are only bad months, when load factor was only 64%, EK should have reduced winters down to 3 weekly departures, however this winter they're using FZ to cover 14 weeks, with a daily flight with a B737Max. Sure would be nice to have EK 777, but not to worry it'll be back on 30th of March, daily.

      Add to this other carriers that are going to launch Zagreb... For small airport such as Zagreb, that is a really nice result. Things are looking up.

      You also have data for last 6 months, one shows 98000 pax and other shows 84000, so I am not sure how reliable your information is, I'll wait for purger to do his story, if all fails I'll contact Zagreb airport and get lowdown on all carriers and pax.

      I don't know what you are going on about since only the first five months of 2018 were published for this particular route. That said you are more than welcome to do as you please whether it's to wait for Purger's article or call Kolinda to get the numbers.

      Also, we have 3 guys that work at Zagreb airport on other forum, so getting data for Zagreb shouldn't be too difficult, also calling Zagreb airport is quite simple, anyone can do it.

      I just checked and the difference comes from Q1 and Q2.

      Q1 - 1.820 passengers.
      Q2 - 12.975 passengers

      That's 14.795 which is then added to the above numbers to come out to be 98.301.

      It was my mistake, when I looked at 2017 I assumed there were no other flights besides EK. Now when I took a closer look I found the difference in the numbers. I guess there must have been charter flights during the first six months.

      As I've said, i am ok with your posts, however we need accurate data so we can ascertain if route is performing well or not.

      From your data, February seems very bad, and i don't dispute the number, in fact i thought it would have been far worse.

      Data for June, July and August are yet to be published, but it is above 90% for 3 months,
      Problem was and is, EK was sending B773ER in January and February 4 times per week, when demand was barely for 3 weekly flights. but EK being EK they must fly 4 times per week minimum.

      Projections for rest of the year should give you insight how well EK is doing in Zagreb.

      It is not bad news at all, plenty of room for everyone. You also forget Australian and NZ visitors, they're growing in numbers with each passing year, right now there are over 300 000 of these visitors to Croatia each year, last year it was over 250 000. Add to this South east Asian numbers, around 250 000, Indian 90 000 visitors this year, 250 000 Chinese and 177 000 Japanese visitors, and growth of 15-20% yoy, lets just say, there's plenty of room for growth.

    So Korean Air started their service today out of Zagreb, operation will be performed by A330-200, till January, when B787 takes over till June when A332 and so on. In South Korea more travelers travel between December 1st and May 1st than June 1st to December 1st. Strange I know, but that's how most S. Korean take their holidays.

    So far booking is good, above 85% for flights to Zagreb for upcoming month and return flights are so so+
    ,around 67%.

    Talks with China Eastern, Hainan and new routes out of Shanghai and Beijing should also be announced soon, Tokyo with ANA might wait announced till early next year. If all goes well, we could also be having flights to North America, I mean US, in 2020, we'll know more.

    Emirates btw, is doing really great, their flights to Zagreb and Dubai have really good loads, August might have passed 20k mark, we'll need to wait for full results.

      I doubts FZ would go double daily in winter. After all, demand from /to ZAG in winter is much lower and that 's why FZ is there. But what I think is highly likely to happen, is FZ going (again) year-round, extending flights into the summer season twice or at least 3-4 peak season summer months, together with EK B777 service. Considering the numbers, more logical for me to have double daily to DXB in summer than in winter, the numbers still low for double daily B777, doubt EK sending A380 to ZAG for now so I believe we will see this summer both EK B777 and FZ B737MAX in ZAG

      Zagreb and Zurich combo is a smart move, it'll guarantee flights are full or near full year round. Vienna is massive destination for Koreans, as is Austria.

      Surprisingly enough, Singapore Airlines might be the airline to come at some point in not to distant future. Croatian government minister had chat with Singapore airlines on potential of flights to Zagreb and them buying s steak in Croatian Airlines. Singapore buys loads of military stuff from Croatia and their trade and ministerial delegation was in Zagreb last year to conclude some trade deals. Singapore and Thai airways are very much in the game, however don't expect anything before 2020.

      Next year, China Eastern/Hainan and ANA.
      2020, we could see more Chinese carriers coming in, perhaps Cathay Pacific or even Air China.

      Number of visitors from South East Asia 2017:

      Singapore: 32 540
      Malaysia: 58 500
      Indonesia: 9 450
      Thailand: 29 000
      Vietnam: 9 200
      Philippines: 11 700
      Taiwan: 126 200

    Next year will be Dubrovnik's long-haul turn.
    Zagreb is booming, the coast is booming and the country showing no signs of stopping.

      I think this year they'll have around 32000 pax on the route, in 2019 around 62 000 and 70 000 in 2020, after that 5 weekly flights are possible with B787 900, this would allow for up to 120 000 pax on the route at 85% load factor to and back. However they'll still need to mix it with Zurich for return flights cause business segment in Zagreb for Koreans is just started to grow, there are now 2 Korean restaurants in Zagreb, 3 Korean hostels.

      We need more Korean business in Croatia, a lot more, ppl like Samsung, Kia, Hyundai and so on need to come to Croatia big time.

      All these new routes are great and I don't want to rain on your parade, but you should be careful with the optimism, especially phrases such as "the country showing no signs of stopping". There are major signs of stopping, at least concerning the coast. There will be growth in the years to come for sure, but it won't be spectacularly double-digit as up to now.

      Oh, once you hit that saturation point yes, but Asia is home to 4 billion people, increasingly wealthy people at that, middle class segment of Asia the above mentioned markets only, generate around 10-12 million leisure visitors to Europe each year, and this might be modest figure, Croatia alone is picking some 1.5 million of these visitors, i am guessing unless there's a major economic upheaval the nice growth numbers should continue well in to 2020s.

      I think there is definitely scope to bring in more Asian carriers to ZAG over the next few years. I travel a lot in Asia and Croatia as a tourist destination has a very positive and growing profile. I can definitely see a Chinese carrier, perhaps ANA or JAL seasonally and also a South East Asian Carrier too (Thai Airways could work well as an add on to the Vienna Service a few times per week perhaps, would capture some of the Australia/NZ traffic too, just my two bahts worth).

    Letio sam sa Koreanom puno puta vecinom iz PRG i FRA za Seoul i dalje sa Gimpa i Incheona unutar Koreje te za Japan. Dobra kompanija i usluga. Hrana i nije nesto. Najcudniji nacin letenja ikada je na letovima unutar Koreje. Manervri koji se tamo rade su cudo. Jednom sam i zaspao, probudili me da izlazim iz aviona, nisam ni osjestio sletanje sa 738. Dobro dosli Korean. Iduci put iz ZG.

    Avion Korean Air Boeing 777-200(registracija HL7598) je najudobniji avion na koji sam ikad letio kao putnik, apsoluno ni jedna plastika kabine tokom leta ne ispusta cudne zvukove u putnickoj kabini,za razliku od Airbus 330 Air Serbia(registracija YU-ARA)u srednjem redu putnicke kabine ispusta povremeno neko slabo skripanje plasticnih djelova iznad sjedala koi itekako iritira (obavezno koristite slusalice za muziku)kao neki polovni svedski ili njemacki auto sa vise od 300tisuca kilometara nakome sve plastike u unutrasnjosti sviraju svoju pjesmu tjekom voznje,nadamo se da ce da servisiraju ili zamjene unutrasnje plasticne obloge ovog divnog aviona.

      Sefe, covek je u pravu. Prica o Er Srbiji jer je na njihovom Erbasu leteo, i prica o Korean Eru jer je na njihovom Boingu leteo. I ocito pogresno povezuje auditivni dozivljaj letenja sa kompanijom, a on se tice proizvodjaca aviona. Cinjenica je da kroz let, sa turbulencijom ili bez nje, Erbas krcka, skripi i pucketa, a Boeing ne. To nema veze ni sa sigurnoscu ni sa komforom i to ne cini Boeing ili Erbas, govorim i o velikim i o malim modelima, boljim ili slabijim. To je jednostavno tako i svi mi koji smo imali priliku raditi na tipovima obaju proizvodjaca to znamo. Cao!

      Really? Leteo sam na skoro svim 747 osim SP i -8i, od AA 747-123 do 744 sa BA, AF, KL i mnogim drugim. Svaki, ali svaki Boeing 747 krcka skripi i pucketa tokom turbulencije, narocito centralna konzola za prtljag.
