Air France to resume Belgrade flights

The French national carrier Air France will resume operations between Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and Belgrade in 2019 following a six-year hiatus. The airline will run daily flights between the two cities with a mix of Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft starting March 31. The Sky Team-member airline operated its last service to the Serbian capital in March 2013. The announcement comes in the lead-up to the the 25-year takeover of Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport by France's Vinci and the French President's state visit to Serbia next week. Air France will complement Air Serbia on the route, which plans to maintain thirteen weekly flights between the two cities next summer season. The French carrier codeshares on its counterpart's operations between Belgrade and Paris.

Air France's Country Manager for Hungary and the Balkans, Ildiko Kiss, said in a statement, "I am delighted that we are returning to Belgrade after several years. With this new flight, Serbian passengers will have a greater choice, thanks to Air France's extensive network from Paris. The three daily flights in our codeshare partnership with Air Serbia will allow excellent daily connections from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris to more than 160 destinations on five continents". In addition to Air France and Air Serbia, low cost carrier Wizz Air maintains two weekly flights from Belgrade to Beauvais, which is some 85 kilometers north of central Paris.

Air France has been growing its presence in the former Yugoslavia in recent years, both through its mainline operations and low cost subsidiary Transavia. The French carrier maintains services from Paris to Zagreb and Ljubljana, as well as seasonal summer flights to Dubrovnik. Earlier this year, it told EX-YU Aviation News, "The Air France - KLM Group strongly believes in the potential of ex-Yugoslav countries. We have a real desire to serve the region to our best. Transavia maintains sustained growth and is developing its network on departure from all its bases in France and the Netherlands to the former Yugoslavia. We have also launched codeshare agreements with Croatia Airlines, Adria Airways and Air Serbia to Paris and Amsterdam. These agreements pave the way for further development opportunities. We are here to stay".

Great news. I am really curious to see what schedule they introduce. Would be great if they had a, let's say, 05.00 departure from BEG because like that they could offer even more connections at CDG.

I was certain that if they came back it would be with Joon, especially since they replaced AF with it in BUD.

    2. Nemjee11:54

Yeah, I see it now. It was added after I posted my comment.

      BEG-CDG
      jU 06.40-09.15
      AF 15.25-17.55
      JU 17.05-19.40

      CDG-BEG
      JU 10.05-12.25
      AF 12.20-14.35
      JU 20.30-22.50

Didn't Jat have a 15-something departure from BEG some years ago? Air France's schedule fits nicely but as far as locals go, I think JU schedule is still more appealing.

Good thing is that AF flight arrives and departs during the quieter period.

This route is mainly for O&D and business pax.

Nemjee, your suggestion is outright stupid. AF would have departures one hour from JU both at night and in the morning (unless you suggest they depart CDG at 2AM).

      Delete
    13. Nemjee15:43

When it comes to business passengers and O&D, JU times are much better than AF ones. Why should a businessman leave BEG at 15.25 when there is JU at 17.00? Same for the other direction.

That said, improved connectivity at CDG is fantastic news as it will create a decent alternative to Star Alliance hubs which seem to dominate at the moment.

Also RO seems to have revised its BEG schedule where 2 weekly flights arrive just before midnight to OTP. I suppose they are adjusting their schedule to make it more convenient to connect to their midnight network.

      Delete
    14. Anonymous17:38

I'll translate to Nemjee. It is there mainly to complement the existing JU schedule.

One can go on AF and return on JU and vice-versa.

That makes it completely senseless introducing a 0500 departure out of all times except for a single pax.

    Congratulations Belgrad but...
Don´t get me wrong, I am not sure if the Serbian market is will prepared to receive 9 additional flights to Paris + the existing one to Beauvais.
Also I don´t think the LH Group would allow the slice of the cake to AF and HV (AF/KL Groupe).
The issue with BEG is that few carriers have been really stable during the last decades.
We have seen so many new comers, old comers but also many leavers.

The Serbian market is mature enough for flights to Germany and Switzerland but not sure about France.
We have seen interesting devolpments on charters + Malta which was a big surprise too.

Should AF/KL Group further expand, then the role of JU as a regional, key player will be effecient only via CDG. The flights to LHR and AMS will lose their credibility.

Also JU has a chance to tie with UX, they are growing like crazy in MAD competing with IB on already many routes like Latin America.

I think the term used was 'fancy airlines.'
Also, BEG has a good mix of lowcost and legacy carriers so why is this a problem? Who can't afford JU-AF to CDG is more than welcome to fly on Wizz Air to BVA... which is also extremely expensive btw. In summer W6 tends to be between 300 and 400 Euros!

Norwegian increased OSL this winter while ARN goes 2 weekly next summer. easyJet added 7 weekly flights this year in addition to their GVA flights. Vueling regularly flies as well to BEG and so does Pegasus.

So where exactly do we need more LCCs? In ex-YU, BEG is by far the most competitive airport and there is very little to complain about.
