Air Serbia to launch nine new routes

Air Serbia has announced the introduction of seven new year-round routes and two seasonal destinations, which will be introduced from June onwards. The national airline will commence year-round flights from Belgrade to Kiev, Madrid, Barcelona, Rijeka, Krasnodar, Helsinki and Cairo, as well as seasonal operations to Nice and Zadar. In addition to the new routes, Air Serbia will add more depth to its network with an additional one weekly frequency to Zurich (eighteen per week), Paris (double daily) and Dubrovnik (daily). The carrier faces no direct competition on any of its new services with exception to Barcelona, which is served seasonally by Vueling. The new additions will also require the Serbian airline to take on more aircraft, although it is still to specify its fleet plans.

As a result of the expansion, Air Serbia's route network to Croatia will grow to six cities, two of which will be served year-round (Zagreb and Rijeka). The carrier will also resume operations to Kiev, which were operated seasonally during the summer of 2016. Furthermore, the airline returns with scheduled flights to Spain after some twenty years and to Egypt after fifteen  years. Initially, Air Serbia planned to commence flights to Cairo in 2014 but cancelled such plans due to deteriorating security in the country at the time. On the other hand, Nice will mark the airline's second destination in France, while Helsinki will be served out of Belgrade for the first time. Krasnodar, in southern Russia, becomes the carrier's third gateway to the country and was initially to launch in 2017, but such plans never materialised. Air Serbia currently codeshares on Aeroflot's flights between Moscow and Krasnodar.

Air Serbia's CEO, Duncan Naysmith, said, "We are very proud to be able to connect the Serbian capital to new cities, adding breadth and depth to our network by providing our passengers the choice to choose from 49 direct destinations, which the national carrier will serve from June 2019". The company added, "The expansion of Air Serbia's international network represents a step forward in the Serbian national carrier's expansion plans". The airline recently confirmed that Airbus has returned a cash deposit made by its predecessor JAT Yugoslav Airlines for eight Airbus A319 jets, amounting to 23.5 million dollars.

WOW, great news.
I am not so sure though that CAI, HEL, Krasnodar and Rijeka will be successful on a year-round but fingers crossed!
11:30
Anonymous said…
And brac?
11:34
Nemjee said…
Krasnodar can easily be operated at night when most of JU's fleet sits idly at BEG. Also, it could stimulate demand as Serbia and Russia have no visa regime and have a free trade agreement in place.
11:37
Anonymous said…
This is very good! Just let's hope we not see more tax payers' money wasted on funding product for transfer passengers. Good for citizens of Serbia to have more direct connections.
11:38
Anonymous said…
These will be charters as I understood. All tickets bought by agencies
11:39
Anonymous said…
So they are keeping Venice and not switching to Trieste as previously rumored!
11:40
Anonymous said…
Krasnodar should be money making destination for them. Hope they plan schedule right.
11:41
Anonymous said…
There is no Brac. Read the article.
11:41
Anonymous said…
There were never such rumours.
11:41
Anonymous said…
wow. do they need additional aircrafts for this?
11:44
nebojsa popovic said…
Excellent Air Serbia!
This is a great news. I must say I am surprised with some destinations like Helsinki, but at the same time it was the right moment to increase its flying network after many years of stagnation.
It will also help BEG to go over 6 million in 2019!
Great news this morning!
11:46
Nemjee said…
There were and Trieste would have been a horrible choice. It was a loss-making route even when Jat flew.
11:46

Good old Beograd-Rijeka is comming back? I say good old because it was the only permanent and stable year-round daily connection Rijeka had in the former Yugoslavia.

Yes. Read the article.

This is bad news for Wizz Air's Skopje-Turku flights.

So, they will use the money from Airbus to fund these new routes. Not a bad decision.
11:52

I do not think they will have this problem
11:53
Anonymous said…
Anon 11:47 what aircraft?
11:53

To be honest I always believed BCN will work and that should be introduced asap but MAD... I am not so sure. Let's see
11:54

i hope this proves more successful then the JP's "expansion"
11:54

They should bring back WAW, BUD and IST.
Demand is there but so far JU is just surrendering all those passengers to foreign airlines.
11:55
Aэrologic said…
Better late than never.
11:56
Anonymous said…
but why is Air Serbia canceling their codeshares with Aeroflot and Alitalia?
11:56
Petar said…
During the Summer both will work fine.
but over the winter period I think both destinations will struggle.
11:57
Anonymous said…
Where did you find it?
11:57
Anonymous said…
They are not.
11:58
Anonymous said…
Alitalia is moving away from EY partners.
Aeroflot wants all the cake for itself.
11:58
Anonymous said…
The fleet expansion plans are unknown at this point. As anon 11:47 said, read the article.
12:00
Anonymous said…
Demand for WAW is low, alsmot all the passengers are connecting passengers to intercontinental LOT destinations
Demand for IST is there, but no chance to fight against TK
There is no demand from BUD. Otherwise it would have worked few years ago

also TAROM

In their reservations ystem you can't still find new destinations so I would give them some time to update it all.
For your information there is code share with AZ on BEG-FRA in summer season
12:05
Anonymous said…
Six destinations in Croatia and OU has only one to BEG.
It looks like someone is sleeping
12:07
Anonymous said…
The great thing is that 7 routes are year round! Well done.
12:08
Nemjee said…
Well I doubt most of these cities would be served more than 4 times per week. The only exception would be Cairo which I think can go daily in summer.
12:09
Dejan said…
Demand for travel to and from Poland is exploding all over Europe!
Poland is full of European tourists and Europe is full of Polish tourists.
But looks like JU is avoiding competition like the devil.
12:09
Nemjee said…
I think Barcelona can work year-round with JU's feed. Good news is that Vueling will be punished for its disastrous BEG schedule. JU will most likely have a split schedule, 06.40 and 17.10, similar to Paris as flight time is almost the same.

RIP VY
12:10
Anonymous said…
From 9 new routes maybe 7 will survive.

And then we shall have so called experts from the neighbouring countries saying how Air Serbia terribly cancelled almost 25% of newly introduced flights :-)
12:11
nebojsa popovic said…
BCN will survive during the winter, but I have big doubts for MAD.
Let's not forget that Spanair also tried MAD-BEG and it did not last long.
12:12
Jelena Karleuša said…
That is at a minimum 80 extra flights a week. I figure between this and the extra charter traffic already announced they will need 4 maybe 5 extra aircraft.
12:15
Aэrologic said…
MAD should have been the priority over BCN.
12:15
Anonymous said…
no sign of AirSerbia codeshares on alitalia.com for BEG-FCO after the winter season. we will see.
12:18
Anonymous said…
Dalmatia is a massive draw for tourists. Belgrade not so much.
12:19
Anonymous said…
Actually, in terms of diaspora demand, there is a sizable Serbian community in Trieste and Udine. On the other hand, that airport has very few flights and there is a transfer potential. Venice flights are horribly scheduled (morning/evening) making it very had for people from other Italian cities to use them.
12:20
Anonymous said…
Yeah that's a very smart strategy from OU. Let tourists coming to Dalmatia be handled by foreign airlines :)
12:20
Anonymous said…
Hopefully they are working on it!
Or maybe they cut some unnecessary frequencies such as overnight flight to Thessaloniki, etc.
12:21
Anonymous said…
:-))
12:22
Tranquilis said…
Good stuff. Congrats Air Serbia!
12:22
Anonymous said…
Wow! although admin did publish around a month ago that Air Serbia will be launching new routes I didn't believe it at the time. But credit where credit is due. Well done Air Serbia.
12:22
Anonymous said…
Turku has an airport?! :)
12:22
Anonymous said…
Last summer they basically had 2 surplus aircraft (if all fully utilized for 4 rotations on average).
12:24
Anonymous said…
Well, both MAD and BCN are big and rich cities. It is now also on our Tourist organisations to advertise more Belgrade as destination.
12:25
Anonymous said…
It's even worse if you compare their networks in ex-YU and the Balkans.
12:26
Anonymous said…
No codeshare with Alitalia? JU already flies half empty to Rome most of the year. This is a bad news! Hope it is not true.
12:27
Anonymous said…
Biggest single expansion since the relaunch of Jat/Air Serbia in 2013. Great to see!
12:27
Nemjee said…
I think JU doesn't have the right aircraft to compete with JU. As for KBP I hope it's an overnight flight.
12:27
Anonymous said…
don't forget that JU has code-share with UX, which has hubs in MAD and BCN
12:27

Not only that but Rijeka has managed to become only the second Croatian airport to be served the whole year!!!!!!!!!
12:29
Anonymous said…
Rijeka year round?! :O wow! even SPU, DBV, PUY and ZAD are seasonal!
12:29
Anonymous said…
Shame they didn't include Geneva in the list. They announced this service last year but it never materialized. Let's see how many routes they actually open.
12:29
Anonymous said…
Bravo :) first BEG expansion and now Air Serbia expansion. Great week for Serbian aviation.
12:29
Petar Čelik said…
the aircraft addition will be quite interesting. my guess is that they have more free capacity on airbuses, so they will add some regional bird into the flock
12:30
Nemjee said…
lol... FCO is among JU's best performing routes. Alitalia does exceptionally well as well, the route is mostly served by A320. Embraer has not been sent in years.
12:30
Anonymous said…
My guess is Rijeka will subsidize the route in winter. Venice did the same in first year but it seemed to work and it has been kept as a year round route.
12:31
Anonymous said…
So does it mean BEG will have close to 100 new frequencies next summer? No wonder Vinci is rushing to build a new state of the art terminal.
12:31
Anonymous said…
I believe this route can work during summer months, those Lasta buses are full from/to Rijeka, and ATR72 is great for this route. Not sure about winter, but ok, even seasonal route is great option :)
12:34
Nemjee said…
Compete with LO, sorry.
12:35
Anonymous said…
To bad that after Vinci takeover and website redesign you cant see anymore what airplane is operated on route.
12:36
Anonymous said…
I'm positive that they will finally retain SPU over the winter as well this year.
12:36
Anonymous said…
Venice didn't subsidize the route, they gave JU €20.000 for marketing activities.
12:37
Anonymous said…
So BEG will easily handle 6.2 next year.

Man, the airport will be a zoo in the morning... love it! :D
12:37
Nemjee said…
I agree, before I used to check the list every morning... now it's pointless. That said, FR24 is pretty good as well.
12:38
Petar Čelik said…
baš me interesuje kako će se ove rute pokazati. nadam se da će imati više uspešnih nego promašenih
12:40
Anonymous said…
Trieste airport has now a railway station and is directly connected by train to Trieste proper, Venice etc. Great unused potential for this airport. Slots available during "human times". AirSerbia is making a mistake not flying there. Huge Serbian community in the area. If the ticket price is reasonable success is assured.
12:44
Anonymous said…
But JU already flies to LJU, VCE, PUY and now RJK. Do they really need another airport in that area?!
12:45
Anonymous said…
ok, also Montenegro Airlines codeshares are cancelled! what is going on?
12:45
Anonymous said…
Unfortunately I don't think SPU is mature enough for winter flights just yet. RJK can serve a larger catchment area. Also, Istra was always welcoming to Serbs and these flights can also help boost winter tourism.
12:46

routes missing: Munich, Geneva, Ohrid
12:47

JU launching MAD is such great news for connectivity. We will now have one-stop options to pretty much every major city in Latin America thanks to JU/UX codeshare!
12:47
Non-compete Clause said…
Because there is direct competition on this route.
12:48

You are right, MAD is the perfect choice as we desperately needed a good connection airport for Latin Amerika!

Munich has triple daily LH and W6 to Memmingen.
Ohrid was tried and it failed, I guess market just wasn't there.
Geneva is easyJet land, they boosted flights a while ago and the route is mostly A320 now.

12:53
pozdrav iz Rijeke said…
People you should look the names in Rijeka Phonebook- half of the names are Serbian. Rijeka has Serbian Consulate General. Croatian National Theatre Ivana pl. Zajca closely cooperates with several cultural institutions from Belgrade, significant part of Serbian export/import goes through the Port of Rijeka, Rijeka is European Culture Capital 2020, plenty of Belgrade and Vojvodina people spend their holidays and off days in Opatija, Krk, Crikvenica, it can serve for one part of diaspora from Koper and Trieste regions, some people from Rijeka would use for sure Air Serbia to transfer, rather than using OU minibus to ZAG, and Rijeka Airport has no money to pay any subsidies, neither Croatian state provides them for Rijeka, at least hasn't so far. During yugo times there were at least least 2 daily flights between the cities, some times even up to 4 and I am really looking forward to this new service and believe it will be success, not only in summer but winter as well.

yeah, phonebook is the right place to assume booking for this route...no comment.

There is no a lot of german surnames in Rijeka Phonebook, but there is lot of people from Rijeka who are travelling to and out of Europe - but guess what - route between Munich and Rijeka is empty this winter even do MUC is one of the biggest hubs in Europe. What u would say about that? Pozdrav iz Zagreba.

CDG goes to 14 weekly.
DBV to daily.
ZRH to 18 weekly.

Sorry, ZRH is 19 weekly.

So JU and LX will operate together 40 weekly flights.
13:27

This is much better than what they were previously doing i.e 7 weekly to untested destinations. They should do like Aegan which is start by 2-3 then gradually increase.

2019. will be a great year for BEG.All this expansion is nice but I think that INI-BEG should be considered too.
Also I think that they know how much is Vinci cooperating with LCC so they are trying to start routes before Easy, Ryanair or Wizz do.

I can tell you that buses and unofficial "taxis" shuttle at least 40-50 pax daily between BEG and SPU in winter. Filling a two-weekly should be no problem whatsoever.

I looked at random destinations from KRR, this is what I found for TXL.

KRR-BEG 04.25-05.35 A319
----01.35 in BEG----
BEG-TXL 07.00-09.00 A319

Blue tariff for €190. Seems like White Tariff isn't available for this flight.

It would be interesting now beside all these new frequencies (at least 60 in summer) U2 to announce opening their base in BEG. And that is very realistic!

Prestige? That's hater talk. After the initial new route introduction period, long haul is a source of profit, increases regional feed and has a significant positive impact on the economy. In fact:

A 10% increase in the supply of intercontinental flights results in a 4% increase in the number of headquarters of large firms.
A 10% increase of departing passengers in a metropolitan region increases the employment in the services sector of that region by 1%.
A 10% increase in air traffic equals an increase of 0.5% of GDP per capita.

Trieste could only play out as a transfer destination. Diaspora is sizable but not sufficient. However, LH introduced two daily flights to FRA in addition to existing Munich. Alitalia serves it 4 times a day. So JU would have to compete seriously there.

The Iberian routes are very well connected from SOF:
SOF-BEG-BCN total route time + transfer = 4h40m!
SOF-BEG-MAD total route time + transfer = 5h15m!

However, one way price is 220.46€, which is way too high and biggest disadvantage are the inbound flights hence no transfers available until the next day. Still not bad.
Even though 3 carriers fly those routes, JU can still get a small percentage of market share.

So economic relations (port, trade) are not important and people involved in that don't fly, cultural relations are not important and people involved in that don't fly, political relations represented in Cons Gen. are not important and Consulate in Rijeka is opened there just like that, all those tourists from both sides are irrelevant, all those possible transfer passengers from Rijeka, Istra, Koper, Trst, irrelevant again, so 7 categories of passengers I listed you just ignore, and put focus on Serbs living in Rijeka the 8th category which would use the new service as well. Well, if that bothers you, than something definitely must be wrong here but not with me.

Don't forget that JU serves both DBV (daily) and TIV (four daily) in summer which are in the similar catchment area. JU is the clear winner here.

JU's longhaul flight though is not a source of profit. Just a source of continuous losses!
The route is flown for three years now, no American company moved its headquarters in Belgrade or anywhere else in Serbia.
American tourists are very few and the route is essential subsidizing the trips of Greeks, Israelis, Albanians and Lebanese to new York.
What we get is onle the "prestige".
17:50

We see from JU's schedule to Rijeka that they will offer connections to western Europe. What markets might be the most popular and is there really that much demand in winter time or will they have to rely on O&D?

port of Rijeka was important for exYu, today there is no big connection with Serbia. Sorry but that is true. Cultural relations? Yeah, sure, generate some pax, but is that enough? Consulate in Rijeka, people who works in consulate going weekly to Belgrade now from Rijeka with bus? Are you kidding? C'man...
Transfer passenger from Istra, Koper, Trst going to Venice, Ljubljana, Trieste many years from now. You think there are huge number of passengers who will choose between 2 weekly flights from RJK to fly via BEG to some european destination? LOL!
This web should have some kind of filter because this type of comments like from pozdrav iz Rijeke are simply ridiculous.

It's a real pity, because Spain is a popular market in Bulgaria and also the Bulgarian diaspora in Madrid and Spain quite sizeable. Decreasing, but still sizeable.
Even if you have 3 carriers, I spoke to people flying MAD-ATH-SOF or BCN-ATH-SOF.
A3 has very agressive one way fares on Skyscanner. I do hope JU has luck though, 50min transfer is just great.

add to your missing routes: Salzburg. Salzburg can be really on both way O&D. Salzburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and is an absolutely tourist destination be it summer or winter (skiing!). Also the City of Salzburg has the second biggest serbian diaspora in Austria. Furthermore Air Serbia could offer good Connections and transfer options to e.g. Montenegro, Macedonia, Greece or Bosnia. There are really many people in Salzburg which are of ex-yugoslav ancestry.

Therefore I hope Air Serbia will be considering Salzburg as a (year-round) destination.

Graz is the second largest City in Austria having only a bit more than 500 serbian passport holders. Salzburg has the second largest serbian diaspora in Austria with about 6.000 inhabitants which were born in Serbia and Montenegro, which mostly are Serbs. In this number of 6.000 there aren't second generation Immigrants taken into this number because most of these were born in Austria. And we are now only talking about the City of Salzburg with about 150.000 inhabitants at all. The Salzburg "metropolitan" area has about 400.000 inhabitants where also lots of Serbs are living.

Also there are more and more serbian tourists to be seen in Salzburg who could profit of let's say two to three weekly flights which would be ideal. Most Serbs don't want to use the Train or car to Vienna or Munich which are all at least 2 hours by car. They mostly prefer using the car becausing of that inconvient travel options.

In a few days I will finish my trip report SZG-FRA-BEG. So let's be surprised. ;)

Thessaloniki operations are among most annoying for us regular travelers and taxpayers. Over the ASL era my family has regularly ended up paying up to 700 eur for one way ticket because they are selling cheap transfers to Germany. That route used to be lovely and relaxed during Jat time.
Regarding nighttime flights, my friend flew this August during the night exactly for the price reasons. Half full on a way there (ATR), 30 passengers on B737 on a way back (probably used as substitute).

Yes, Turku has an airport. It is not much, but it serves big catchment area. Turku has a huge shipyard where they build mega-cruisers and all workers (around 15000 of them) use TKU to fly in and out of there. Also, Wizz is experimenting with some routes.
If you want to have great summer vacation with mild to hot temperatures (YES, Turku has hot summers with up to 35 degrees and great sand beaches) go there, you will be surprised

€700 one way? I think you are exaggerating here, that would be way more than a one-way ticket to LCA in summer. The fact you used the word 'taxpayer' shows that your comment isn't very innocent. It's one thing to dislike Air Serbia but it's a whole different thing to trash them like this in public.
