Adria ends Moscow service after 29 years

NEWS FLASH

Adria Airways is operating its final flight between Ljubljana and Moscow this morning, marking an end to the airline's 29 years of operations between the two cities. Flight JP914 departed the Slovenian capital at 10.00 and is expected to return from Moscow's Sheremtyevo Airport just after five in the afternoon. The Slovenian carrier announced the abrupt suspension of the route two weeks ago. The airline has been maintaining daily flights between the two cities this winter season but was hit by strong competition when Russia's Aeroflot introduced the same service in late October. Adria conceded that since Aeroflot commenced flights to Ljubljana, its passenger numbers have declined, with Russian nationals preferring to fly with their own flag carrier. As of late March, Adria will conclude a codeshare agreement with its competitor on the route.

Adria Airways launched scheduled services between Ljubljana and Moscow in November 1990.

Sheer incompetence. So JU is the only ex YU airline to have regular year round flights to Russia.

So you obviously work in JP^s revenue department and know better what they shall do?

Dude one doesn't have to work there to know they are incompetent.

My god, if these flight were ever profitable, they would have taken to fight. Aeroflot is just the excuse to end a service that has long been quite deficient.

This line was very profitable! But when Aeroflot come they lost cca 80% passengers.

If that was the case, SU would be way cheaper than JP. Since JP did not have any connections it is safe to assume that most pax flew point to point. With same capacity, passengers have simply moved from JP to SU which ti reach Moscow. For reasons of price or product which is very similar. So that does not make any sense.

SU LJU-SVO have more the 80% LF (fly 2 times this year).

Do not forgot that JP did not have free luggage - 23kg. A lot of Russian P passengers did not know that and they must to paid 30EUR in check-in - bad advertising from mouth to mouth!

For sure 70% of all passengers are Russian.

I also have 2 Russian friend and they chose to flight back home - visiting family with SU.

Aeroflot was extremely smart to enter this market. They saw how well TK did and on top of that there are no MEB3 to compete against in a market where people travel a lot and whose citizens have quite a lot of disposable income.
If I am not mistaken, LJU-IST was the busiest route in 2018. From what I've seen, in early January Aeroflot even upgraded this route to an A320.

Oh yes Nemjee, ist that the reason JP cannot make the market work? Because the citizens have money and travel a lot?

The reason JP exited the market is that the route was highly negative financially.

No, I am just saying why SU launched LJU. JP failed because they flew a three hour flight on a CRJ with no connections on either end..

This is not one isolated route being cut. Adria probably hired Marie Kondo to tidy up the whole network. They put all the routes on one pile, decided to cherish and keep FRA, MUC and similar while all those routes that didn't spark joy like SVO are gone. Adria is now clutter free.

Clutter free? Adria cut a few routes but it's workforce is still the same and so is the number of planes it has. Actually its fleet will grow once SSJs start arriving.

SSJ would be perfect for the Ljubljana - Moscow route. Too bad they will never arrive.

Clearly the case they can only make money when they have a monopoly on route. They have withdrawn from every other destination once competition came (WAW, SVO, IST, LON, ...).

They had 6 weekly flights to BEG

@ Anon 13:59. Well this clearly shows that routes that got competition were not worth "fighting" for, since they were already negative- which would further increase the negativity beyond a certain point that would jeopordize the overall business if continued.

Look at AMS - they have competition, and even more than the SU9 of SU. Still they fly it, bacause it is worth fighting for a PROFITABLE route.

      Re: Anon 14:53

AMS works due to the supply shortage in ZAG, similar to London airports. They both work well because ZAG doesn't offer enough capacity to these cities, hence causing a leakage.

They still compete on AMS and CDG

    7. Anonymous16:17

.... because it is worth fighting for AMS and CDG, wheras MOW , WAW etc were not ;)

If Moscow wasn't worth fighting for then there would be no reason for them to operate it for 29 years! It's just shows that JP is a basketcase. Soon they will fly only to Star Alliance hubs.
