Air Serbia Cargo posts record results

NEWS FLASH

Air Serbia Cargo recorded its biggest ever annual uplift in 2018 by transporting 6.200 tonnes of goods and postal packages. At the same time, the division's revenues grew 7% compared to 2017. According to Air Serbia's Cargo Director, Veselin Djordjević, the two crucial destinations for cargo transport within the airline's network are New York and Moscow. "JFK Airport is important due to long haul capacity and the capability of covering cargo transportation across the Atlantic to the United States, Canada, and countries in South America, while Moscow has proved crucial for short haul traffic", the company said. The airline has transported a wide variety of cargo to the United States, including fruit and vegetables from Serbia, mozzarella cheese and textiles from Italy, garments and machine parts from Turkey and Romania, mail from Russia and Greece and safety glass from Croatia. From the other direction, there are regular shipments of cargo from Ecuador, Argentina and Brazil being sent to Serbia and the region. In addition to its nonstop flights to New York, Air Serbia provides road feeder services to 53 cities across the US and Canada.

Cargo has really been a silent achiever in Belgrade in recent years. Does anyone know how big is JU's share of the cargo market in BEG?

DHL is in Budapest I think, UPS might be the same.

I know TNT uses Solinair from LJU while DHL has a five weekly B734 flight to Linz, it used to be BUD until last year.

    2. I would be nice for BEG to become the central hub for the Balkans for cargo.
Are Serbia does have very good coverage of ex-yu, and strong coverage of some airports in the Balkans. Would have to improve coverage of more Balkan airports.

I think key is the road network, not so much flights to the region. If there was a highway to Romania it would further boost numbers.

BEG is the cargo leader in Ex Yu with about 22k tons in 2018.

Long haul cargo results would have been even better if Air Serbia launched additional destinations at ORD or PEK. It takes couple of years for cargo service to develop and JU missed that opportunity. In the past couple of years they could have enjoyed cheap oil, growing demand and relative lack of competition. Ex Yu region and surrounding countries are slowly getting more long haul destinations, oil price is trending up and global market slowdown is imminent. Timing is everything.

    1. BEG cargo results have been getting better and better every year. But the cargo leader in Ex YU for the last decade or two has been LJU. In 2018 with about 26k tons.

Not true Rusjan. Check the data. Belgrade handles more cargo than Ljubljana.

    3. I did and I suggest you do the same. Belgrade has never handled more cargo than Ljubljana since 2000s. In fact roughly 10 yeary ago Ljubljana handled more cargo than Blegrade and Zagreb combined.

  5. JU Cargo is serving ORD with daily trucking service from JFK ( 26 hours transit time ) and that service is well used in cargo world ( same trucking that other Carriers use).

I am sure Chicago would be served via Toronto if they launched flights, it's much closer.

    2. But having cross border customs duties. Cargo is business not travel

But JU is not launching Toronto in 2019 and it might be too late to launch it in 2020 if global economy is in deeper than expected recession at that time.

How much they can make from transporting 15t of goods? What are the usual prices?

    2. 15224kg to be exact :)

      Revenue from 15t, anyone?

    4. Anonymous08:49

From other side, if cgo is around 15t, it means that passenger LF is low, otherwise there will no be enough space for so much cgo

Stop talking nonsense. The A330-200 has the capacity to carry 27 tonnes of cargo. You think bags were 12 tonnes.

    6. Anonymous09:03

Planes usually take less cargo when they have high LF.

17 tons daily is ok for JU taking in charge they do not hve daily widebody flights. Seems that BEG JFK BEG has noticeable loads. Bravo JU

Ps: 15 tons today BEGJFK is very good achievement

  8. I heard from a friend that works at JU that Toronto flights are in their final talks and that cargo is the one of the issues.. JU wants to make sure that cargo on the YYZ flights will be just as good if not better then the JFK route.

Also the flights to YYZ are being looked at to start in the fall/winter of 2019. YU-ARA would be used on the JFK and the new YYZ route.

New A330 will come in 2020.

    and

they told me that prep work for the long haul route is about 6 months. Lots of things needs to be in place before they can announce. i guess that is logical.

I just hope that is the case and that YYZ route by JU is around the corner.

There are strong indications the JFK route is making money in the summer and losing in the winter. However they make more money in the summer than what is being lost in the winter. Now if they really want to make money they would introduce additional destinations by wet leasing another EY A330 during summer, and reduce frequencies in the winter just enough to keep ARA busy 6 days a week. Now if they do that they would be making this much: https://youtu.be/u_aLESDql1U
