Lufthansa will introduce three new routes to the former Yugoslavia this coming summer season and boost frequencies on the Serbian market. The German carrier will launch new seasonal flights from both Munich and Frankfurt to Tivat, as well as from Munich to Rijeka. The development will mark Lufthansa's entry onto the Montenegrin market and its sixth destination in Croatia. Operations to Tivat will launch on April 13 and 14, once per week, with the airline's 136-seat Airbus A319 aircraft, with the one weekly Rijeka service to commence May 25 and run with the ninety-seat Bombardier CRJ900 jet. The carrier will compete directly against Montenegro Airlines on the Munich - Tivat route, and complement its codeshare partner Croatia Airlines on the Rijeka service.

RouteLaunch date
Munich - TivatAPR 13
Frankfurt - TivatAPR 16
Munich - RijekaMAY 25

Lufthansa will launch an extra seven weekly flights to Belgrade this summer season with an additional daily service between Munich and the Serbian capital, totalling three daily flights. The new rotation will operate in the evening, departing Munich at 21.05 and arriving at 22.35, while the return service is scheduled to leave Belgrade at 06.30 and touch down in the Bavarian capital at 08.00. Lufthansa faces no competition on the route. The Munich service complements the airline's double daily flights from Frankfurt to Belgrade. The airline also plans to maintain capacity on its Frankfurt - Zagreb service this summer. Lufthansa will wet-lease a 100-seat Bombardier CRJ1000 aircraft from Iberia Regional (Air Nostrum), which will be deployed on both of its two daily flights to the Croatian capital as of March 30.

Elsewhere, Lufthansa will keep the same number of frequencies on its seasonal summer routes to the Croatian coast this year. This includes three weekly flights from Frankfurt to Pula, as well as daily operations to Dubrovnik and Split. From Munich, Lufthansa will maintain eight weekly services to Dubrovnik and Split, two weekly to Pula and three weekly to Zadar. "We have a lot of loyal customers in Croatia, and an excellent reputation, and it delights us to connect Croatia with the world via our hubs, and so contribute to its development", the airline said. The carrier will also continue to maintain daily operations between Munich and Sarajevo. “Lufthansa has been expanding services from Sarajevo to Germany and the European Union by introducing new flights together with Austrian Airlines, Swiss and Eurowings, and now accounts for 25% of all traffic at Sarajevo Airport. We look forward to continuing to provide services and a flexible network to travellers in the region”, the company noted.

Nice. I would really like to see more of Lufthansa mainline in the region. They only serve Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia but no flights to Ljubljana, Podgorica, Pristina or Skopje.

What aircraft did FRA-ZAG operate with last year?
09:03
Anonymous said…
Well done Tivat. Lufthansa doesn't fly to much larger markets in the region so this is a scoop for them.
09:04
Anonymous said…
Why don't they start FRA-SJJ?
09:05
Anonymous said…
Nice, so they will have two aircraft staying overnight in BEG now, the other one is from Frankfurt.
09:06

LH is slowly shifting capacity to MUC.
09:07
Anonymous said…
Agree. Very odd for such a large airline that they have such a limited presence.
09:08

I wish LH, LX and OS would fly to LJU, would provide for better and more reliable service than JP.

How exciting.

LH used to fly to Skopje once upon a time.

Shame about the ZAG capacity downgrade on FRA-ZAG route. I'm surprised.

Has LH flown to Montenegro before?

Their coverage in Croatia is impressive, even if it is mostly seasonal.

LH departures from BEG this summer:

06.20 FRA
06.30 MUC
13.05 MUC
13.45 FRA
17.00 MUC
09:14

They've left Eastern Europe and Balkans mostly to Austrian.
09:16
Anonymous said…
There simply isn't enough demand. Remember when Swiss started 5 new routes in ex-Yu. All failed miserably.
09:17
Anonymous said…
LH is not happy at all with Fraport bringing FR in FRA and is moving a lot of both long haul and short haul flying to MUC.
09:18
Anonymous said…
They have JP for these types of destinations in our region.
09:20
Anonymous said…
Great to see them expanding. Could they shift from Tivat to Podgorica in winter?
09:21
Anonymous said…
Back in 2011 PRN airport announced that LH was starting DUS-PRN. It never happened in the end.
09:23
Anonymous said…
The new Tivat flights don't connect onto anything so it's purely for German tourists.
09:24
Anonymous said…
What plane was used before?
09:24
Anonymous said…
Eurowings cancelled Dusseldorf-Skopje before it even started so I doubt we will be seeing Lufthansa anytime soon.
09:25
Anonymous said…
Hopefully in 2020 they start Podgorica too.
09:25
Anonymous said…
I might be wrong but I think it was Airbus A320 series, it varied between A319 and A321 depending on demand.
09:25
Anonymous said…
At one per week it was unlikely to think they were targeting transfers.
09:26
Anonymous said…
Weren't winter ops also downgraded to Cityline?
09:26
Anonymous said…
Would be nice to have an earlier departure from FRA to BEG as connections from the US tend to be quite long.
09:27
Anonymous said…
A320 series.
09:27
Anonymous said…
The new Lufthansa livery is so ugly. Still I'm happy to see them expand in the region :)
09:28
Anonymous said…
Yes ,but they continued to operate short haul flights only from FRA and MUC,and they left DUS,CGN and STR only to germanwings
09:28
Anonymous said…
I think this will impact JU numbers as they will collect mostly alltransfer pax in the early AM wave.
09:29
Anonymous said…
Chinese numbers in Serbia keep on booming, LH has a strong partnership with Air China, I am sure they also carry a share of them. I think OS does well in BEG, yesterday they sent two A320!
It's also nice that LH Group will finally have some real competition in BEG from Sky Team with both Air France and Transavia fighting back. This should keep fares low which will stimulate passenger numbers even more.

I am surprised Wizz Air isn't responding to this market growth. Seems like they are happy to give the market to others.
09:31
Anonymous said…
Yes, CityLine operated most flights in winter. Many passengers shifted to AF and KL.
09:31
Anonymous said…
Hahaha how exactly will they collect transfer passengers in early AM wave? What are you going on about?
09:32
Anonymous said…
One of the possible reasons for the capacity downgrade is that they are loosing passengers to competitors who now offer direct long haul flights - Korean Air, AC Rouge or better transfer options like Emirates... even though people here were claiming how they are immune to any sort of competition.

MGX is increasing frequencies to Germany so hopefully LH will respond next year with more flights too.

Guys, I'll fly with Lufthansa first time for 3 weeks from Belgrade to Paris (via Frankfurt and Vienna in return). I want to know when I'll be able to check in for flights and will I get any sandwich in flights :)
09:39
Nemjee said…
I think LO affected them the most as their passenger numbers boomed in ZAG last year. Numbers on ZAG-AMS fell quite a bit so I don't know how many shifted to KL.
09:41
Anonymous said…
Yes you get a sandwich and you can choose drinks on board (it's all free). You can check-in online 23 hours before your flight or at BEG, LH does check in is done at T1.
09:44
Anonymous said…
Good, nice to see more choices when flying out of BEG.
09:48
Anonymous said…
shifting 3-4 A380s is not "a lot of both long haul and short haul flying"
09:51
Anonymous said…
This new Munich flight is actually a resumption of the same flight they ended a few years ago. I think the times were the same as well.
09:53
Anonymous said…
Will LH also operate Rijeka-Munich year round like Croatia Airlines?
09:54

No, it's only seasonal
09:55

I flew from Belgrade to Berlin via Frankfurt with them and I got free drinks (any drink) and a cookie ... no sandwich ... on both flights.

Are any of the other Croatian destinations year round other than Zagreb?
10:00
Anonymous said…
It probably depends what time you are flying with them.
10:02
Anonymous said…
Wet leased CR9 operated FRA-ZAG last summer, also Air Nostrum.
Remember, that they have a Crew Base in summer in ZAG.. (3 based CRJ)
10:03

They change it up between cookie, sandwich, pretzel. Depends what they stock the plane with.
10:03
Anonymous said…
No, all are seasonal except Zagreb.
10:03

No Mainline ops in 18
10:07

Does Lufthansa fly nonstop European flights from any other city other than Munich and Frankfurt?
10:07
Anonymous said…
It would be great to see third daily flight between Frankfurt and Belgrade.

I hope LH is considering to introduce it
10:07
Anonymous said…
The good thing about LH's morning flight(s) from BEG is that it is always on time since crew has a layover and plane is sitting in BEG. Otherwise I have found Lufthansa to be constantly late.
10:09
Anonymous said…
I agree they are usually very tardy. Last year I flew BEG-MUC and we were quite late. To top it all off we arrived at MUC and the captain informed us that we have to wait because there was no one at the gate to handle our aircraft! During the flight the crew did apologise about the delay over PA but she said "Don't worry a lot of flights are late so maybe you make your connections" lol. And no there were no strikes or anything like that.
10:10
Anonymous said…
Pity. They could try SPU once per week in winter.
10:12
Anonymous said…
No. Their hubs are FRA and MUC. They use Eurowings from other airports in Germany.
10:13
Anonymous said…
So, no LH soon to SKP. What a pity.
10:15
Anonymous said…
I like it. I think it's stylish.
10:16
Anonymous said…
Which German cities does Montenegro Airlines fly to?
10:16
Anonymous said…
As long as the current OS capacity to SKP is enough for Star Alliance, we will not see LH at SKP.
10:17
Anonymous said…
Interesting. Thank you for the info.
10:17

OU maintains for them the loss making winter flights.

True. There is stils room for OS to go double daily and then we might see LH.

10:42
Anonymous said…
Yes, they fly from Frankfurt. Eurowings also flies seasonally.
10:43

Ex-Yu is a very cost sensitive market. There is a greater chance of seeing Eurowings more in the region.

According to my opinion the following flight is missing

FRA-BEG 14:10 - 16:00
BEG-FRA 16:45 - 18:45

Everyone here again speaks about the serious downgrade of LH on FRA-ZAG, shame, and other blablabla and not one single person mention till last year LH operated once daily on FRA-ZAG, mostly on 319, so 130 passengers, which is today twice daily with 100 seater, so 180-200 passengers per day. But hey, it's ZAG, it must be downgrade, of course
11:25

Comparisons are made year on year. Not 2019 compared to 2017.
11:30

Long time ago Jat Airways had these flight times:

BEG-FRA 12:00 - 14:00
FRA-BEG 14:50 - 16:40

For me it was the best possible flight schedule between Frankfurt and Belgrade, ofcourse mostly for P2P passengers
11:38

Funny that a lot of people commented on LH operating Air Nostrum's CRJ1000 on FRA-ZAG route in 2019, and that exactly shows how easily people can be manipulated. Because -surprise!-, LH operated the same aircraft in 2018 on ZAG-FRA route. Even from the same company, Air Nostrum (not to mention the frequency increase between December 2018-February 2019, from daily to double daily). There won't be any change at all. So dear exyu editor, please find something else to feed the trolls :)
11:47
Anonymous said…
The big majority of new LH flights are being launched from MUC instead of FRA now.
11:50
Anonymous said…
Do you think Rijeka will work?
11:53
Anonymous said…
^ Actually Airbuses operated this route.
11:54
Anonymous said…
Out of 405 flights (one way) between April-October 2018, 397 were operated by CRJ1000s. Is that enough statistics for you?
12:04
Anonymous said…
The article doesn't actually say there are any changes in Zagreb. It just says that FRA is operated by Air Nostrum equipment. And while other airports are regularly criticized here by people who post comments it seems any mention of Zagreb in any negative context is forbidden and anyone who does that is a troll, hater, Serb or whatever. Learn to live with some criticism and not just with "Bravo Croatia" especially when it is not warranted. Especially not in this case. And what, I should shout Bravo Croatia because ZAG has not a single new airline announced for this summer while every other capital city has - Ljubljana, Podgorica, Sarajevo, Belgrade, Pristina, Skopje. I would rather be asking myself why and what is the airport's management doing than writing Bravo Croatia and calling everyone a troll who hasn't sung its praises to ZAG and its management.

Letio sam s njima jednom C class. Užas čisto. Hladno jelo, nikakav welcome drink. Vse skupa ono. Njemačka štedljivost i efikasnost.

Direct flight to Tivat is a dream come true ! I love the Dalmatian coast ( Mali Losinj !!! ) but getting there with car is not really pleasant. To drive down to Montenegro is even less attractive. Generally speaking Munich is/was not really well connected by air to the coast. For example there are no flights Munich-Pula. It hope this changes now !

Condor and Ryanair flying RJK to Frankfurt , Croatia RJK to Munich, Laudamotion RJK to Berlin, Eurowings RJK to Berlin, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Cologne Hannover and Hamburg, all except OU on planes capacity 140-180 passengers, and mostly 2 up to 4 flights weekly. Why one weekly to the second biggest LH base with plentiful transfer options couldn't work. LH operates 3 daily to Trieste from Munich, and I believe not only this will work but be increased and upgraded very soon

You are right. Year by year. 2017 one daily frequency on Airbus, mostly 319. 2018 two daily frequencies on 100 seater. 2019 exactly the same as 2018. But hey, let's now introduce something new, let's mention some 2 years period, just to show "downgrade" which does not exist. And let's once again point out difficult January with 87 passengers less, imagine, one full Q400, imagine whole 87 people less in ZAG then one year before, to show how badly everything goes in ZAG for LH and all others. Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic....
18:38

No, let's put on our sunshine glasses and pretend that everything is perfect, that ZAG is shining, that the airport is not struggling financially, that the airport grew 10% in January, that Emirates turning ZAG into a seasonal service is somehow an improvement... Yes, let's introduce something new so that we can present mediocre results as something fantastic. In my opinion that's pathetic, pathetic, pathetic...

You are worse than that overly optimistic Croatian guy who came on here with his forecasts up until 2050.

Gorski Kotar? Ilirsku Bistricu i Pivku?

BY car.

Da hast du völlig Recht Athos - es heißt wirklich "by car".

Don't think it will happen, LH explored SKP with EW and failed. I don't think they are adventurous enough to try PRN with all the raiseburo mafia.

Great news! Loving the increased presence of LH on the Western Balkans. Would love to see them connecting MUN & FRA with SKP, I think business travelers would be happy to avoid flying W6 to Hahn or Memmingen.

Se strinjam z Athos_cro. Reško letališče ima izven obmorskega turizma zelo omejen potencial (zaradi vsega zgoraj navedenega).
