Belgrade Airport targets 6.2 million passenger

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is aiming to handle 6.2 million passengers this year, while Serbia as a whole should reach at least 6.6 million travellers, the country's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Zorana Mihajlović, said. Speaking to BBC News Serbian, Ms Mihajlović noted that Belgrade Airport should handle "at least 6.2 million travellers", while Kraljevo's Morava Airport, scheduled to open on June 28, will welcome "around 20.000 passengers this year and between 100.000 - 150.000 in 2020". The Minister noted that Niš Constantine the Great Airport will see approximately 380.000 to 400.000 travellers this year. In 2018, Belgrade processed 5.641.105 passengers, while Niš settled for 351.582.

Ms Mihajlović previously said that as part of its concession contract, Belgrade Airport's operator VINCI is obligated to meet set passenger targets each year. "We have projections on how many passengers will be handled, how many new flights we can expect etc", she noted. The President of VINCI Airports, Nicolas Notebaert, recently said, "We must now open new routes so we can secure sustainable growth in the coming years. The good thing about the concession is that my interest and the state's interest are the same. It is a special agreement whereby the more passengers I have, the greater the revenue I have, the better it is for the country's economy. What we have done at other locations was to double or triple passenger numbers. We are talking about 25 years. We will be here for a long time. We are already working on bringing new airlines to Belgrade".

Belgrade Airport has not reported its growth figures so far this year, with VINCI to release its first quarterly results on April 12 at 17.45 CEST. On the other hand, Niš Constantine the Great Airport has recorded its fifth consecutive month of declining passenger numbers in February. The Serbian government recently approved five million euros to subsidise the launch of ten new routes from Niš. City authorities must now identify the ten destinations which they deem are of public interest, after which an international tender will be launched to seek out potential operators. Kraljevo's Morava Airport is set to open in late June after a number of previous deadlines were missed. "From its opening in late June, until the end of this year, we expect several carriers to introduce flights", Ms Mihajlović said.

    Is it feasible for them to add 559.000 passenger this year?

      They added 300.000 last year with barely any new flights. This year there are going to be 70 more weekly flights, that's a lot man.

      I guess the airport is confident which means they saw some growth in January and February. We will know in a month. Hopefully they update their website and add statistics.

    It very much looks to me that some deal has been made with Ryanair for Morava Airport. If you remember last year FR management met with the Serbian government. Mihajlovic expects 20,000 passengers this year which is the same projection Ryanair gave for its flights to Banja Luka when they started flying there in October for the period October to January. Mihajlovic also keeps saying how the B737 will be able to land at KVO. So in my opinion they have reached some deal. And the projection for next year is also the same projection Ryanair has given for Banja Luka for 2019.

      This baggage policy with various low cost airlines become more & more complicated. I've just had a brief look at Wizz policy. You have this first item, then if you have Wizz Priority you get second free item, even bigger. And if you want checked in baggage then you need to choose between 10kg, 20kg or 32kg. Of course, you need to decide everything upfront or you will be charged even more at airport...

      In my post it was clearly written that given information are for free hand luggage - so the luggage you can take on board not to pay anything.

      As long as you need to pay something it is out of this comparison.

      I was flying many times with easyJet and the fact you do not have to weight your hand luggage is very very helpful especially as the size of the allowed hand lugagge is much bigger than by W6

      My intention was not to argue with your comment, just a observation of how thing got complicated. Considering that, EasyJet offering from marketing perspective is very good.

      And since you mention, if you pay for something it is not out of comparison. It depends how expensive basic fare is and how expensive are additions. Other thing that counts, at least for me, is how complicated is to figure it out.

      And again, at the moment, I don't have idea how does it looks when you compare current prices for this 2 airlines, I'm making general comment.

    15. Anonymous13:22

      I understand your point, but I tried to be precise in my comment.

      "As long as you need to pay something it is out of THIS comparison" . It means that in this case I compared only the luggage you do not have to pay for and in this case it is obvious U2 offers much better product.

      This comparison does not include people who travel with more pieces of hand luggage or with check-in luggage.

      And price wise...

      Random dates
      BSL-BEG-BSL U2 (06:40-08:35h ; 09:30-11:45)===> 18-23.6.2019 ==> 59,00 EUR
      BSL-BEG-BSL W6 (22:40-00:30h ; 15:50-17:45)===> 17-24.6.2019 ==> 95,00 EUR

      Above hand luggage policy applied

      Check in luggage
      1 x 20 kg with Wizzair ===> 34 EUR one way
      1 x 23 kg with easyJet ===> 23,39 EUR one way

I do think the Minister is a bit too optimistic about the results and I'm not sure BEG will reach "at least" 6.2, meaning she thinks this will be the absolute minimum. But BEG will certainly surpass 6 million this year which is a great achievement too.

      I think this is a realistic estimate, at least for BEG but let's wait and see.

    As an aviation enthusiast I really like the current development at all the airports across the former Yugoslavia. Nice development and hopefully more good news to come for all :)

      It's all good news, the more the airports in the region develop the more developed it will be. Just compare it 10 years ago. BEG had just 2 million, SOF the same.

      EXYU tourist agencies in Toronto. They offered many deals where AC operates YYZ-LHR or YYZ-ZRH etc leg and then JU operates 2nd leg ZRH-BEG or LHR-BEG etc as a single ticket. Those deals have been abruptly announced as ending today.

  26. Congratulations BEG!!!!
    I can just hope something changes in ZAG soon because BEG clearly shows how it's possible to grow at much higher rates. Lowering taxes in ZAG, and bringing LCC's, taking politics out of OU and enabling its development with ZAG hub, attracting more long-haul services, is all possible, and is all what BEG already did. I don't think ZAG will ever reach BEG numbers, after all BEG has always been central and the biggest airport in ex-you, but ZAG could do much much better and have much higher numbers and I am so sorry and so sad it is not happening.

      No thanks, ZAG is a different kind of airport and it can survive on normal airlines. Cheap airlines bring passengers but not profits for the airport. FR and U2 can fly from MZLZ but they have to pay what others pay, it's only fair.

      I would really like to know where you will hide when ZAG soon announce arrival of one LCC with special prices adjusted to them

      @anon 14.37 LCCs pay the same price in Belgrade as other airlines. Wizz regularly complains about it.

      Snobbism might portray some kind of superiority complex, but if thats the case, then Aerodrom Zagreb is "a different kind of airport" for all the wrong reasons. It ought to look around for some neighbourhood ideas.

      Are you aware of the fact that Ryanair, Wizzair, Transavia, Easyjet fly to and from Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Fiumicino, Malpensa, Madrid, Barcelona, Athens....? Do you really suggest ZAG is better than those airports? And what do you think, are passengers of legacy carriers who are getting food and drinks on board for free more likely to buy food and drinks at the airport or would that be passengers not getting anything on board on LCC'S? Have you ever flown one of the "cheap" airlines? If yes, you would know they carry business passengers as well, people going to couple of days city breaks who spend a lot, tourists, even transfer passengers lately, who spend the same or more as legacy airlines passenger's, with only difference being numbers and profits from those passengers counted in millions. It is sad there are people who still believe it's bad for an airport to have one million passengers more than before because they fly on "cheap airlines". Unbelievable!

      hahaha come on, you think MZLZ would make more money from FR or WZ than EK or QR? Come on, given me break. They are after profits and sustainable business, not only pax numbers like some in the region. FR already fly from the region so MZLZ can't give them same treatment especially not when EW and otehrs pay normal prices.

    7. Anonymous16:02

      Like you've been told, they pay normal prices in Belgrade for example as well, which had a net profit of 25 million euros in 2018.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous16:07

      They have to pay normal prices because JU doesn't pay anything. That is not case in MZLZ, at least CA pays its bills.

    9. Anonymous16:23

      Then do you mind telling us how much profit ZAG made last year?

    10. Anonymous16:25

      @16.07 what you are saying makes no sense. If LCCs pay normal prices in Belgrade and you claim they don't pay normal prices elsewhere, then they must really love Belgrade.

    11. @An.16.00 and probably 14.37
      hahahaha, yes, because you don't know the basics of economy in general, not only aviation. It is always about the quantity. You always earn more with cheaper prices and big numbers against more expensive prices and small numbers. In addition to that I never said ZAG should concentrate on LCC only instead EK and QR what you imply now. On the contrary, growth of both traffic and profits is only possible by having everything there. And just for the end, to leave alone foreign airports and stay in Croatia :Do you think Split with all LCC 's flying there is bad airport? Aren' t you ashamed that ZAG with its brand new terminal, base/hub of the flag carrier and several times bigger city than Split and country capital has almost the same passenger numbers and less profits? Is it sustainable business you talk about?

    12. Anonymous16:51

      SPU is different because it brings almost only tourists so seats are sold to tour operators. DBV is copying ZAG by attracting normal airlines like AA, IB, BA... and not cheap airlines like ZAD, it is very risky because they black mail if they don't get what they want.

      ZAG is good now, it got KE and EK before that. More great airline to come in 2019, stay tuned.

      SPU :70 % of traffic LCC on scheduled routes, and "almost only tourists so seats sold to tour operators" hahaha ha which century do you live in? you are talking about majority of charter flights in SPU which actually has some 80% regular services. Do you even know the difference between charter and regular flight?

    I was at the airport yesterday and it was packed in PM hours; honestly I never expected so many people on an off-season day such as 10th March. There were people in all check-in areas. I flew SU2097 and it was packed; they even upgraded some passengers to business as they were overbooked.

    Two negatives: a) sad that Nikola Tesla naming is out of the picture b) the new tail livery on YU-ARA looks like an unreadable mess. The plane was parked in front of the hangar area and absolutely nothing from a distance on that tail can associate / connect with Serbia.

      Is 2097 the 18.45 departure? What was the passenger structure like?

      Delete
    2. Anonymous17:59

      That is correct 18:45. A number of Chinese and Serbs connecting to PEK via Moscow and I would say a lot of point to point pax. as well because lots headed to immigration / passport control from that flight. Interesting that SU went for de-icing prior to departure despite the fact that the sky was clear and without rain. Others like JU flight to FRA / AMS; AZ didn't go through de-icing prior to take off.

    3. Anonymous18:23

      Maybe the air towards Russia was much colder? That's interesting. If SU does this well then I imagine what will happen in summer. I guess we will be seeing a lot of A321s.

    Easyjet base would be fantastic! But even increase of their flights would be very good.
    Looking at their bases these are destinations with good possibility to work out from Belgrade: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Edinburgh, Hamburg, Lisbon, London Gatwick, Lyon, Manchester, Milan M, Naples, Nice, Palma, Paris Orly, Porto, Toulouse, Venice.
