The Serbian government has announced the opening of Kraljevo's Morava Airport on June 28, making it the country's third commercial airport after Belgrade and Niลก. The state has committed 8.5 million euros to overhaul the runway, equip the terminal building, as well as hire and train fifty employees, all of which will be completed within the following three and a half months. During that time, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) will carry out the airport's certification process in order to enable it to handle international flights. Earlier this week, the state-owned Airports of Serbia company became Morava Airport's operator, taking over from the Serbian military which had solely run the airport over the years.
The Serbian Minister for Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Zorana Mihajloviฤ, said, "Everything should be ready by June 28 so the airport will be capable of handling ATR and Boeing 737 aircraft. From its opening in late June, until the end of this year, we expect several carriers to introduce flights. We will also work on developing cargo traffic at Morava Airport". Located in central Serbia, it is projected that Morava Airport would significantly boost the local economy since it lies between several industrial cities and is in close proximity to the Italian-run Fiat-Zastava car manufacturer. Furthermore, the airport is expected to stimulate the local tourism industry and benefit health tourism in particular which is already developed in the area.
Wizz Air had previously expressed interest in serving Morava Airport and said it was "monitoring developments". Furthermore, the Serbian government previously announced it was willing to enter into a public-private partnership agreement with a German company which would operate services from Kraljevo to both Frankfurt and Istanbul. The name of the company was not specified. The state had missed numerous deadlines for the airport's opening, primarily over issues concerning its joint use for military and commercial purposes, however, these have now been resolved. Morava Airport boasts a passenger terminal and control tower built in 2012 and valued at 22 million euros, as well as a 2.200 metre-long and thirty metre-wide runway, which will now be expanded to 2.500 metres long and forty metres wide.
Finally!
ReplyDeleteIf Wizz were really to launch flights to KVO, which routes could be sustainable?
ReplyDeleteI predict: Wizz Air to Basel or Malmรถ, and some Aviolet charters.
ReplyDeletetrue
DeleteAjajaj... :-S
ReplyDelete?
DeleteThis time it seems like it will happen.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteIf they talk all the time about B737 maybe it means Ryanair in KVO...
Or they are referring to JU's 737s.
DeleteIstanbul would perform very well from Kraljevo.
ReplyDeleteTrue, didn't Jat schedule 2 weekly KVO-IST? but then they gave up on the idea?
Delete3 or more flights per week to IST connecting to Turkish network would be great. Little backtracking but it could open up the largest network of destinations in the world. All from a new airlort.
DeleteThat is really nice terminal and I am sure there is potential for Morava.
ReplyDeleteWith several targeted destinations, it could succeed.
DeleteI hope this time is different and they actually open it. LCCs can bring targeted routes, however someone like Austrian can bring more routes and frequencies. Analysis of connections from few years ago.
ReplyDeletehttps://ibb.co/h2bVMZp
I've heard that they would retiere Q400 so not sure if still valid.
Agree that OS with Q400 would be a good start.
DeleteOS is too expensive.
DeleteLaudamotion would make sense.
DeleteSerbia needs to genuinely increase its number of tourists in order to its airports have their numbers growing. New airports do "create" new pax, but if we want BEG, INI and KVO to have constant growth and not take away each others pax, we need some real increase in tourist potential.
ReplyDeleteConsidering the large diaspora, industry in the area and close proximity of Zlatibor and Kopaonik, this airport does have the ability to attract some flights and boost tourism.
DeleteJudging by the official stats, Serbian tourism numbers are booming.
DeleteElections are coming again...
ReplyDelete+1000
DeleteMore progress has been made on opening this airport in the last two weeks than in the last 5 years.
DeleteNo elections have been scheduled. And even if there are some elections they certainly won't be in the middle of summer when this airport is supposed to open.
DeletePersonally, I am optimistic about KVO. But the only way to get some traffic is applying Skopje´s model by heavily subsidising airlines.
ReplyDeleteThis airport has so much potential. Very good location for an area that does not have an airport close by.
ReplyDeleteAir Serbia could have been flying some routes from there with an ATR72 if it wanted to.
ReplyDeleteNo they couldn't have since the airport does not have an operating license and the airport had to be officially converted from a military into a mixed use airport, which they just did this week.
DeleteIs there some virus in ex-Yu countries as to why airports write "Airport [insert name]" instead of the other way around? On the building it says Airport Morava instead of Morava Airport. I noticed a lot of airports in the region write it the wrong way around. Even Zagreb had Airport Zagreb on the new terminal before someone brought to their attention that it's wrong and they changed it.
ReplyDeleteHaha so true
DeleteNo virus, just a piss-poor knowledge of English.
DeleteAnd again saga of opening Morava. Which announcement is that. 5th6th, 7th? Every time deadline was sure.
ReplyDeleteAnd even if they open it who will fly from this airport. Air Serbia with PSO?
But for sure if Morava will be opened that will hurt Belgrade numver. Those passengers did fly frlm Belgrade befire opening Morava. Thise are SAME passengers
No actually majority flew from Pristina.
DeleteYes yes everything hurts Belgrade even when it doesn't. We know the drill. Also they will target bus customers not those who flew from Belgrade.
DeleteLook at bus departures from Novi Pazar to Germany and Austria. They could easily operate flights from KVO to Hamburg, Munich, Vienna and maybe even to Switzerland... though I think people from this area mostly emigrated to Germany.
DeleteMaybe Wizz Air could start with two weekly KVO-HAJ.
SKP has the highest number of German connections in the whole region, even much more than BEG.
DeleteHAJ makes sense but it is also connected to SKP.
So what if SKP is connected with HAJ? Google KVO to see where it's located.
DeleteAlso I am sure SKP might have more German destinations but BEG has more frequencies.
BEG is well covered in Germany:
DeleteTXL - 9x
HAM - 3x
HAJ- 2x
DTM - 4x
DUS - 6x
STR- 6x
FKB - 2x
MUC - 21x
FRA - 21x
FMM - 3x
That's 77 weekly flights, that's 11 weekly flights.
There are the destinations (Wizz Air) from a similar airport in Georgia:
DeleteAthens, Barcelona,[14] Bari (begins 1 August 2019),[15] Basel/Mulhouse (begins 2 August 2019),[15] Beauvais,[14] Berlin–Schรถnefeld, Budapest, Charleroi (begins 4 August 2019),[15] Copenhagen (begins 2 August 2019),[15] Dortmund, Eindhoven (begins 1 August 2019),[15] Gdaลsk (begins 2 April 2019), Katowice, Krakรณw (begins 18 September 2019),[16] Larnaca, London–Luton, Memmingen, Milan–Malpensa, Prague,[14] Riga, Rome–Fiumicino,[14] Tallinn (begins 4 August 2019),[15] Thessaloniki, Vienna,[17] Vilnius, Warsaw–Chopin, Wrocลaw
TXL is 11 weekly, JU 7 and U2 4 so a total of 80 weekly flights to Germany. I think that's enough.
DeleteYes but TBS is generally underserved so it's easier for Wizz to expand there.
It's about Kutaisi.
DeleteW6 got MASSIVE subventions from Georgia to operate so many flights from Kutaisi!
DeleteIt makes the SKP agreement look like a bargain by comparison for the local government.
Any of our airports can have as many flights as we want to any city in Europe, IF we are willing to pay the airline the subsidies it wants.
Subventions for airlines are the way to go, everyone knows that.
DeleteMissing BEG destinations that SKP already has:
DeleteSXF, FDH, BRE, HHN, NUE.
Absolutely sure is that SKP will soon be connected to MUC and FRA.
Doubt they will get either MUC or FRA, the market is left to OS, even Swiss can't operate it with mainline flights.
DeleteGreat news. I really hope they attract some airlines.
ReplyDeleteWeren't people ranting how after the Belgrade concession it will be the only airport in Serbia with traffic? But it seems Nis is getting 10 new routes and Kraljevo is also being opened.
ReplyDeleteTypical drama and over reaction.
DeleteThis airport is ideal for cargo.
ReplyDeleteWaiting for ฤika Rade's comment :)
ReplyDeletePostovani Anon 10:35, sa ikrenoscu, moj komentar sam postavio. EX-YU Aviation radi dobar posao. Ocigledno. ✈

Which airport is bigger in general? INI or KVO?
ReplyDeleteWhat about the runway? Can it handle for instance a 767 from Russia?
How many aircraft can fit in the aporn?
INI is bigger. I think it can handle 767 and some large cargo airplanes, if I'm not mistaken.
DeleteI find it amazing that this building has been sitting for almost 7 years and just collecting dust. Hopefully better days are coming.
ReplyDeleteNice. And what about Uzice? It also has a new terminal but is not being used.
ReplyDeleteThey said how Saudis were interested in taking a concession there. Don't know what happened.
DeleteThat German company sounds like SunExpress. They could open Istanbul as they wouldn't be bound to the bilateral agreement between Serbia and Turkey.
ReplyDeleteGreat, but after a mail stamp size apron, now 2500x40 m runway, seriously?
ReplyDeleteWhy not prepare for the future and follow ICAO standards by having 45 m wide runway...
+1
DeleteAirport has an excellent location for visiting various cool destinations around, among them my favourite city in Serbia: Novi Pazar (2 h by bus) and nearby monasteries.
ReplyDeleteThis airport will be of great importance for Raski and Moravicki counties and Central Serbia. Nearby are also Vrnjacka Banja, Goc, Kopaonik, as well as Zica and Studenica monasteries and the medieval Fort Maglic.

Licno, sto duze to bolje. Ostajte u dobru postovani Anon 19:05.

ReplyDeleteWhy does the sign in English say "Airport Morava" and not "Morava Airport"?

Who is going to be responsible for bad investment of 8.5 million euros? Zorana Mihajlovic?
ReplyDeleteGosodine Bato Risticu. Vase misljenje je neuspesan projekat Morava. Koliko ljudi toliko misljenja.
Pustanje u saobracaj i dalja izgradnja aerodroma u centru Srbije. Bato. Vama prijatno prolece i uspesnost u dobru...
