Adria warns of European airspace challenges

NEWS FLASH

Adria Airways expects for flight delays across the continent to increase as European air transport faces major challenges due to air traffic congestion. The carrier noted such disruptions will occur as the number of travellers continues to grow year by year, with growth exceeding existing aviation infrastructure capacity. "In the past year, Adria Airways, like all European carriers, saw an increase in the number of changes to its flight schedule, which resulted in delays and cancellations. Airspace restrictions, weather conditions and a lack of crew members were cited as the most common factors", the Slovenian carrier said. Adria Airways' Accountable Manager and Chief Operating Officer, Tadej Notersberg, noted, "From an operational point of view, a demanding period lies ahead of us, as all European air carriers are once again faced with a number of challenges. In our daily operations we are already facing the initial consequences of European airspace restrictions, and there will be many more of them during the summer. Delays are inevitable and passengers and air carriers have to start preparing for them now. These are irregularities that we have little influence over as a carrier and cannot avoid them". He added, "We were faced with a crew shortage last year, but the situation is better this year. We significantly increased crew recruitment and training last year, and this is continuing this year. I expect that we will be able to manage the circumstances on which we have a direct influence over, as we are well prepared for them".

I think JP wants some money and compensation. The European airspace is no place for moaning airlines. You have to be rough and tough just like in the wild nature.

Adria Airways is a joke. They shoud address other issues first, then airspace congestion :)

Imagine that in an alternate timeline they would have been introducing the SSJ-100 right about now. That would have been their death knell.

I had 3 flights in the past week (2 x EasyJet, 1 x Transavia) and all 3 were delayed due to air traffic congestion. Delays ranged from 15 to 35 minutes.

So what Adria is saying is not false. All airlines are facing this issue and it seems to be getting worse. Evening flights are particularly problematic, since delays accumulate by then. Hope that EU does something about it.

I had14 flights last 4 weeks and one delay. Adria is right but their main issue is internal not external. As usual, bad management is pointing fingers to external instead of cleaning garbage in front of their own door.

    2. What is EU supposed to do? Increase the airspace? Make the aircraft's fly higher?

As per news since beginning of this year, EU is not prepared with enough staff and alternate planning to meet more capacity. So they dont need to do something mentioned by sarcastics, they need to simply do their job as they should have done.

    4. Really? EU didn't anticipate the air traffic to reach this point, but that's why they have Adria to point out the issue?

Thats what LH boss and other airlines were saying already this year. So JP knows what they are saying. On other note, none of my JP flights this year were delayed.

Fix your PR department and communicate to your customers as apropriate and not cry out loud. Review slots, routing and network. Same suffer for all operators in continential Europe and you are even not in the central zone of the ATM congestion issues. OTP KPI is anyway within +/-15min so you an cope with that. As an COO you should manage OCC to deal with it and inform the crew how to engage. So, play the game or put your planes in the hangar and go plant potato.

Maybe if they would pay ATC charges and fees on time, the ASNPs could invest into more people or better equipment, instead of crediting this poor joke of an airline.

  10. let me put it this way - last year FABCE (block of airspace consisting of Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Bosnia) plus Serbia introduced free airspace. So airlines can plan routes freely between any points within this reagion. This is introduced in upper airspace in Italy as well and is going to be in all other ECAC states in next few years. Guess what - as airlines use routes planning software supported by by AI, they are sometimes worse than old route scheme - making illogical zig-zags. ATM providers are fighting against congestions for many years and I think, this season will be tipping point. But the problem lies primarly in the airport capacities.
