Sarajevo to complete new terminal by late 2020

Construction of Sarajevo Airport's new passenger terminal is progressing with work scheduled to be completed by November 2020. "Currently, this is our most important investment where we will increase capacity by 900.000 passengers per year. We signed the construction contract in August 2018. Although work was delayed by two months due to complaints from one of the parties taking part in the tender, we are now progressing full steam ahead", Sarajevo Airport's General Manager, Armin Kajmaković, said. He added, "We will get 10.000 square metres of extra space spread over four floors, twelve check-in desks and new air bridges. In total, the airport will have the capacity to handle two million passengers per year". The new terminal will be linked to the existing one to form a single functioning unit.

Construction work on new terminal

Work has also begun on the construction of a small stand-alone VIP terminal. "In line with other modern airports across the globe, Sarajevo will have its own exclusive VIP lounge at a separate location, which will offer direct access to the apron", Mr Kajmaković said. The facility will spread over 300 square metres and is valued at 770.000 euros. Construction work is expected to be completed within the next nine months. Sarajevo Airport will also build a new business and administrative building which will house offices for staff. Valued at 3.1 million euros, the new facility will be located in between the new passenger terminal and control tower.

New VIP terminal

Sarajevo Airport will also undertake airside work as part of its modernisation project. The main apron will be expanded, while the overhaul on the runway and taxiways is also expected. It has been described as an "extremely challenging project", valued at 10.2 million euros. Sarajevo airport handled 174.508 passengers during the first quarter, representing an increase of 3.2%. It added an additional 5.384 travellers on the same period last year. Over the next month, Flynas is due to launch services from Riyadh to Sarajevo, Eurowings will commence new flights from Berlin, Aegean Airlines will inaugurate operations from Athens, while FlyBosnia will commence commercial flights.

BA used to operated 3 weekly LGW-SJJ in March 2007, but the flights were suspended 1.5 years later due to the high fuel costs. If I am not mistaken, they were operated by their then beautiful 737-400. Jahorina was promoted during winter as the Brits are known to love ski.

BA has started expanding in the region lately with Ljubljana and Split added this summer, so hopefully we will see some other ex-Yu airports in following years.

BA doesn't even fly to BEG. I just do not see them launching SJJ first. Unless visa restrictions are lifted I don't expect BA to use valuable LHR slots for flights to SJJ, BEG, TGD, SKP or PRN.

    6. They don't need to use LHR slots for SJJ or elsewhere in ex-yu, they operate european flights from Gatwick as well

pozdrav iz Rijeke flights from LGK are O&D traffic so SJJ traffic wont be able to connect to their transatlantic network. That is the most important reason to have BA. For just going to London/England there are so many other cheaper options.

Not so sure gasto people use that much Lufthansa, SAS Swiss and Austrian. Their prices are like 3 or 4 times bigger than LCC's flying to nearby airports within Bosnia or in Croatia. Even OU is ridiculously expensive. The only acceptable Star carriers in terms of prices are LOT and Aegean, but as far as I know they don't fly to SJJ. Or maybe LOT does, not sure. And I 'm not sure that THY, the biggest Star in SJJ is carrying gasto people from there to IST

    4. Anonymous21:46

You forgot JP, who is also flying to SJJ with 1 hour layover what is not bad at all. Its pricing is also quite competitive.

The main issue with SJJ is actually the surroundings. After this expansion, it will be difficult to expand in the future as there is no space. Residental areas in close proximity will mean that it will probably never work 24 hours a day. Is there any plan to relocate the airport?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous18:26

there will not be any relocation of SJJ, as any feasable location that is somewhat close to Sarajevo is in the other "entity". As long as there are "entities", the chance for relocation is exactly zero.

All possible locations in the "federation" are too far from Sarajevo, so they make it only to the animations and business plans of some shady mid east investors...

Everywhere in ex YU airports get new terminals except for EU nation capital Ljubljana. No signs there, that we will hve a new terminal in the very near future. It gets delayed and delayed as the rest of their traffic infrastructure in the country. Slovenia still lives in socialism, a few on top live like the rest of the world, those taking advantage of socialism, missuse it and the rest is working, paying taxes and keep hoping for changes. Infrastructure investments for future generations or attractive FDI conditions are not on the agenda, of course not, too much foreign capital could disturb the daily routine of those having profited or better robbed most from these still socialistic structures.

just check ot the location with google maps, to see that it can not be meaningfully extented. it could be widened by few meters towards west, but in which direction could it grwo longer?

      Delete
    2. No, i meant that it might be extended towards Vojkovici, but i'm guessing that's where RS&FBiH play comes into question. Towards Ilidža I don't see a way to extend it as the runway lights begin even on the building called Focanska in Pejton (used to attempt to hit the planes with snowballs from that building before the war).

It's a shame they can't cooperate to extend the runway in the direction 12 at least 400m.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous00:04

2700m runway in SJJ is quite normal and comfortably land bigger planes but not the A380.
Don't see any urge of having a bigger one.

Flybosnia will play a crucial role in development at Sarajevo and BiH. Sarajevo has a lot of tourists during a year. In my opinion, Sarajevo will skip Podgorica, Ljubljana, Tivat airport in just 2 or 3 years. Sarajevo is multicultural and unique city.
