Edelweiss Air deploys A340 to Pristina

Switzerland's Edelweiss Air has commenced operations with its wide-body Airbus A340-300 aircraft between Zurich and Pristina. The 314-seat jet is being deployed on services to the Kosovan city several times per week, depending on demand. The aircraft features 27 seats in business class, 76 in economy max, and the remaining 211 seats in its standard economy cabin. Edelweiss was the third busiest airline in Pristina last year, handling 240.200 passengers, while Zurich solidified its position as the busiest route to and from the city, accounting for 16.2% of all passenger traffic.

      Thousands of albanian People lives in Switzerland and they all fly back home for holidays.. so nothing special about an A340. They fly rather this big bird instead of more daily flights with an A320

      The only international flight during ex-yu time from/to PRN was ZRH. Later, even with MAT, Palair and Avioimpex having dozen of daily flights from SKP to PRN, MAT was leasing Jat DC-10 to operate two daily rotations. So, market between Macedonis/Kosovo has always been HUGE, especially in peak summer season so this is not much of the news

      Hey pozdrav is Rijeke, interestingly BSL serving as a low cost alternative to ZRH will probably become a busier route from PRN. Today there are 5 flights from BSL to PRN operated by 5 different airlines:
      (1) easyJet Switzerland;
      (2) Eurowings;
      (3) ALK Airlines;
      (4) Orange2Fly; and
      (5) TUI fly.

      The next 3 days there are 6 flights per days with 3 other airlines serving the route:
      (6) Wizz Air;
      (7) Chair Airlines (formerly Germania Flug); and
      (8) Zimex Aviation!

      The competition on the ZRH-PRN route is nowhere near as stiff.

      I still think its a big thing because few years back this wasn't possible. Also I don't see any other routes in intra europe section which flies big birds to the Ex Yu. So big thumbs up from Dubrovnik!

      Zvone, TUI flies regularly Dreamliners from different UK cities to both Pula and Dubrovnik, for entire summer season, with 6 weekly flights, 2 PUY and 4 DBV if I'm not mistaken and being from DBV you are the first who should know it

      Exactly as Andrej says. The max seats are not even sold separately on the PRN flight because A340 deployment is adhoc.

      Guys, in occasions like this, plane is usually FULL. And probably all 300 + seats are sold economy and lucky pax will be upgraded - of course not service-wise and with more space only

      Edelwiss A320 has 156 economy seats. The A340 has 211 regular economy and another 76 economy plus. The A320 has 174 total seats while the A340 has 314.

      Basically it holds 140 more people on each flight.

    JU used to fly DC10 ZRH-BEG back apx 15 years ago during holiday season. Also LX operates A333 to PRG OPO or 77W to ATH and TP A332 ZRH to LIS during peak travel season

      JAT flew DC-10 around Europe. Sometimes due to number of passengers, sometimes due to aircraft shortage, sometimes so the crew can have enough flying hours on the type. I flew JAT DC-10 to Tivat and back. Full plane to Tivat (travel agency lease) and 20 passengers back. Now THAT was one awesome climb rate after take off from Tivat!

      Gd morning Mr Anonymous, I would like to ask you 1st, are you an aircraft technician or mechanic? Just for your info A340 in all it's series is one of the saftiest aircraft so far no problems i.e hydraulic brakes, engine, gears etc etc, so please do not under estimate the giant airspace factory being since long NBR 1 in technic, safety and sales. Thank you.

      Anon 06.17 you do realize that the A340 has generally been a flop? Especially the A346 variant.

      They can use thrust reversals to help so brakes do not overheat? I would assume that's a standard procedure? Also, kinda offtopic but I would like to know, in case of really overheating the brakes, how much time you usually need to cool them down? Thanks

    Now I see why my comment on this topic the other day got abruptly removed. Fair enough, but you go through the details of typing all the details about daily flight, including flight departure times, flight numbers, aircraft type only for the comment to be deleted, makes you wonder why bother.

      That's right, in addition to 4 other A320 flights Edelweiss/Swiss operated on ZRH-PRN today there was a A340 flight today.

      Also, tomorrow's afternoon Edelweiss ZRH-PRN scheduled to be operated by A340.

      Interestingly, no A340 on Saturday when it's the busiest day of the week although there were multiple A320s.

    And these flights continued this week two with both Sunday (WK1412) and Monday (WK1408) afternoon flights operated by A340-300. Since it's these same flights operated by the same equipment for at least 3 weeks that I'm aware of, they may in fact be scheduled on wide-body for a period of time.
