Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport handled over 645.000 passengers in September, representing an increase of 11.6% on the same period in 2018. According to operator VINCI, the airport handled over 4.750.000 travellers during the first three quarters, up 7.4%. In a statement detailing its third quarter results, the company said, “Belgrade Airport, which became part of the VINCI Airports network at the end of 2018, recorded 9.3% growth in the third quarter, driven by the opening of new routes by Air Serbia, Air France, ASL and Wizz Air”. The airport is estimated to handle some 6.2 million passengers by year’s end.

DeleteThat is the real question - is the year this good because of Vinci’s quiet work or would it have been like this either way. I know we all wanted 200 intercontinental destinations and three new terminals 7 hours after they took over, but we really can’t complain - the results are awesome. I just hope they do some serious work soon to separate incoming passengers so we can have a centralized screening area.
DeleteMain growth was fuelled by JU adding a lot of new flights. Vinci had nothing to do with that. Even third daily by LH from MUC and SU was before they came. All they did is bring daily AF and seasonal ASL and seasonal two weekly from LYS.

DeleteWell ASL had like one or two flights in September so they barely contributed. AF on the other hand couldn't fuel THIS much growth. By that logic third daily from MUC contributed more as it was mostly a combination of A320/321 while AF was mostly A319.
DeleteSKG numbers continued falling with -1.1% in September. They had 740.995 this year.
DeleteMy guess is that BEG has a good chance of overtaking them in November or at least coming really close to them. They had 580.000 passengers last year.
All Vinci did really is change the logo, change the web site to the worst, change the badge strap (employees neck) and dismiss as much as possible the name of Nikola Tesla. Other than that almost nothing was done by them.

DeleteSOF will have a terrible October, Ryanair cut lots of flights in Sept and Oct (pilot/plane shortage) but will introduce them back in November.

DeleteWell BEG will have some 8 extra daily flights this winter. SOF will really need to up its game. Also H1 2020 will be also challenging for SOF because BEG will have all those new flights that were launched this summer. Overall BEG will come really close to 7 million next year.
DeleteWhy? I don't see the two airports as competing in any light. Even less SKG. And the most important thing is what value those airporports bring to the population and the economy.

So what if we are comparing them? BEG in terms of size and prospects is more comparable to SOF or SKG than to ZAG or DBV. We are comparing apples to apples. Don't see why you are triggered by this especially now when BEG is catching up to SOF.

Delete@15.47 Belgrade is not the only airport in Serbia. Nis has more passengers than a number of Croatian airports.

BEG has a hub model. SOF and SKG are O&D and even then you can hardly compare SOF and SKG because SKG has strong summer due to tourism and SOF has strong winter due to tourism.

BEG didn't have a hub model until 2013. Nothing is stopping SKG and SOF from doing the same. It's not BEG's fault they didn't do anything about it!

Plus, BEG will need another big expansion similar to that of JU this year to maintain and increase growth in 2020.
Yes, Belgrade is a hub. No doubt about that. Don't forget that JU introduced massive growth in June which means first six months should see big growth like H2 in 2019.

DeleteLast year in October, November and December BEG had 1.239.829 passengers. With zero growth BEG should be at 5.989.829.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that BEG should be around 6.120.000 at the end of the year. This is with average 10% growth in the next three months.
As it stands the growth should be over 10% for each and every one of those months given the recently announced JU increases & Adria's collapse. Wouldn't really be surprised if they make it to 6.2 mil.

Delete6,1 or more is great news. Is there anything more that could be done? Well, there is. Vinci said they are working on bringing long haul airlines to BEG, so far that score is 0. Now that low season is around the corner, they can start construction of a new terminal, or at least refresh old A gates, or at least show us detailed plan on what will be done and when. It would be nice if new control tower gets going as well. Is there more anyone else can do to push BEG numbers higher next years? Well, there is. Air Serbia could expand wide body fleet and long haul destinations, or at least start replacing 737 and ATR fleet as promised long time ago, then use that metal for new 2020 destinations. That's not too much to ask...
