Serbia shelves Jat Tehnika sale

NEWS FLASH

The Serbian government has temporarily cancelled plans to sell the state-owned maintenance firm Jat Tehnika. Last month, the Ministry for Economy offered a 99.4% stake in the company at a starting price of 10.3 million euros with October 4 set as the deadline for binding bids. However, the ministry has since withdrawn the call and cancelled the sale due to “certain issues concerning the privatisation (of the company) that needed to be addressed”. Jat Tehnika was formed in 2006 after it was spun off from Jat Airways. It employs around 1.000 people. The company is predominately responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of Air Serbia’s fleet. It is certified to provide full maintenance for the Boeing 737 Classic and Boeing 737NG, ATR 42 and 72 aircraft and all Airbus A320 types. A previous attempt to sell the firm in July failed when it attracted no bidders.

The government is not really into selling it. They release tender requests only to satisfy the legislation concerning privatization. JT is profitable but is poorly managed and often has issues because of various demands from the government to support Air Serbias appalling fleet. Most of the JU fleet is in really dismal condition and only JT is able to handle their maintenance. Otherwise the maintenance would have tobe outsourced which would be detrimental for Air Serbia balance sheets, OR it would have to make a giant order of new planes exceeding 1 billion EUR. So there is that symbiosis, or better said - parasitism of Air Serbia on JT. Yet JT has fairly satisfying amount of foreign customers bringing it profit, and the government takes most from it. For long there has been no major investment in Jat Tehnika. The result is that the engine MRO unit is almost out of service.

You do realize Tehnika only services B733s and Atrs? Airbuses are handed by Air Serbia Maintenance.

Incorrect. Air Serbia maintenance does only line maintenance. Everything else is done by Jat Tehnika.

Air Serbia Maint does ATR, A319, A320 and A330 Line, Jat Tehnika does B737 Line, as soon its heavy all aircrafts go to Jat Tehnika, except A330

Lepo.

I also dont think we should sell ex YU maintenance expertise to some foreign company which will just manage by anglosaxion management culture and rationalize everything just to ensure top management high salaries. Look at SR Technics in Zurich. Once excellent company, now just a left over, not even doing maintenance for LX anymore. They lost a lot of expertise. I used to work with them a lot, today that dept even doesnt replies to email anymore as mgt sits in UK or USA
