European-registered airlines, including low cost carriers, will now be permitted to operate flights from Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia to Azerbaijan. The country will offer fifth and seventh freedom rights to carriers, allowing an airline to fly from a country other than its own to Azerbaijan or from its own country to Azerbaijan and onwards to a third country with full traffic rights. Furthermore, an airline that chooses to exercise these rights will be offered a 100% discount on airport services in Azerbaijan during its first year of operations, followed by a 70% fee cut in the second year, and a decrease of between 30% and 50% in the third. The measure involves six international airports in the country - Baku, Nakhchivan, Ganja, Gabala, Lankaran, and Zagatala. The European countries that are being offered such rights and incentives are France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Spain, Greece, Czech Republic, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Ireland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Bulgaria, Georgia and Switzerland. Non-European countries which have been included are the United States, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, South Korea, Malaysia, and Australia.
Wow nice. Hope this stimulates some flights from ex-Yu to Baku.

I guess they are trying to compete with Georgia but alas. Also, the country is amazing. TBS itself is gorgeous as well as Kutaisi.
Additionally, they have their local LCC - Buta Airways that is somehow growing but not that much.
Azerbaijan expensive? I have been to Baku and it was like crazy cheap. Maybe Tbilisi is even few percentages cheaper but still Baku is ideal for budget city break.
DeleteThere are cheaper and more expensive options everywhere. I had for example an entire meal, delicious, local, fresh, tasty, in small and nice restaurant in Cairo for 3 dollars. Few months later, a colleague of mine returned from short visit to Cairo and I asked how it was. Nice, but expensive, was the answer. What do you mean expensive I asked, what did you eat and where? The answer was : pizza in Sheraton for 20 dollars. LOL!!! But generally, Azerbaijan is not expensive, I agree, unless one gets tripled "tourist" prices, or eats pizza in Sheraton :)

DeleteYes but this expensive argument can also be said for Zagreb or Belgrade. You can find a decent place to eat excellent food for little money and then you can find expensive food as well usually of lesser quality. lol

ReplyDelete- Azerbaijan passport holders dont need visas for Serbia and Macedonia, flying with TK is expensive though so this might trigger things up.
- Baku is stil an unknown destination for us but the recent "bling bling" revamp might be attractive for peeps from our region.
- I can defo see Wizzair (or Ryanair) starting flights from Baku to the EU
- in terms of new flights there is more chances that we see Abu Dhabi and St. Petersburg flights then Baku.
In the Caucasus, it seems Armenia has suddenly opened up to the world too.

Ex-Yu entire market remains very small. If you take the total, it can correpond to what Vienna airport alone makes in 1 year.
Serbia must also make more to promote itself.
