Ohrid Airport plans 2020 expansion

NEWS FLASH

The General Manager of operator TAV Macedonia, Alper Ersoy, has announced that Ohrid Airport will be expanded in 2020. Construction will begin next year with the airport’s capacity to be doubled to 600.000 passengers on an annual basis. It comes following record results this year. During the January - November period, Ohrid Airport welcomed 296.870 travellers through its doors, an increase of 69.8% on the same period in 2018. There were a total of 2.469 aircraft movements, up 66.7%. The growth has been fuelled by Wizz Air, which introduced several new routes to the city this year. “This airport, which offered only a few destinations during the summer of 2009, now serves a total of 22 points. Eight operate throughout the year - Zurich, Basel, London, Memmingen, Milan, Vienna, Dortmund and Malmo - while fourteen are seasonal between April and October - Adana, Amsterdam, Bergamo, Brussels, Dusseldorf Eindhoven, Friedrichshafen, Istanbul, Katowice, Maastricht, Stuttgart, Tallinn, Tel Aviv and Warsaw. We are working on transforming Ohrid Airport into a regional hub that will serve not only Macedonian passengers but also travellers from neighbouring countries. These efforts are being coordinated with the government, the Ministry for Transport and Communications, airlines and municipalities”, Mr Ersoy said.

Maybe they could start adding a proper public transport connection

      For sure that.
Maybe 4-5 per day, or in peak period like today for example when we have:

      FMM 17:30/18:00
      ZRH 18:00 /18:50
      MLH 18:30 /19:00
      MXP 19:00/19:30

Which is really big for OHD and makes pretty crowdy situation considering terminal capacity, 2 planes at the same time in summer, no air in the building some were even falling unconscious.
It may sound pointless but when you give Wizz subsidies why not for public transport? Many van/bus operators tried at some point but failed (mostrly because of illegal taxis and vans). But hey, that was 3,5,10 yrs ago when the traffic was limited or none...maybe in future years it will be sustainable.

So OHD and INI are almost neck to neck when it comes to traffic.
Ohrid, being the Jerusalem of the Balkans, has extremely high potential.
Would be good to negotiate with BA, FR, RO...

  3. No point of 600.000 capacity, with 50% annual growth it will reach that number in 2 years...

Onur Air was flying 1pw from 15.04 till 07.10 this year. The last year also.I don't know why it is not mentioned in the article.
For 2020 summer season IZM is an addition, in 2021 maybe we will see IST as year round option.

  6. HUB is a big word here, I guess, I understand something different under HUB. Of course as aviation enthusiastic german entrepreneur, living in Sofia, I welcome every development of airports in the Balkan regions with big interest enthusiastically, as there are still not much alternatives but the car. The train connections (beside parts of Romania) are a joke, buses do their (trains) work.

  7. INI I visited 2 years before against my will, because Air Serbia ATR 42 or 72 could not land inbound BEG from SOF because of fog...very socialistic/old fashioned. Has there been done something in between?

There were some minor adaptations but there is a plan to expand the terminal by building a completely new extension.
