NEWS FLASH

Sarajevo Airport saw its busiest year on record in 2019 by handling 1.143.680 passengers, representing an increase of 9.3% on 2018. As a result, it added an extra 97.045 travellers. The number of aircraft movements stood at 13.671, up 1.8%, while 2.523.565 kilograms of cargo were processed. “All these metrics indicate that the records achieved by Sarajevo Airport in the past few years will continue into 2020”, the airport said.

Solid result, but a country like Bosnia and city of Sarajevo with such big diaspora should have at least 2 million passengers. So much space to improve.

I still don't get it how Kosovo or Macedonia can have more air passengers than BiH.

It is simple. Most of diaspora is in Germany. And Bosna is very easy reachable by car from Germany, and much cheaper than by plane.

Anon 11:43 - there are few reasons for this. Both Kosovo and Macedonia are much further away from Western Europe by car than Bosnia. From certain parts of Bosnia you can reach the Austrian border in 3-4hrs drive. Kosovo is quite isolated in that sense, so flying makes most sense, and Macedonia heavily subsidized Wizzair using them basically as their national carrier - with quite cheap flights.

On the other hand, on top of being quite divided and having some Serbs and Croats on purpose flying from Serbia and Croatia because... well.. Balkans... and also in general the development of aviation in Bosnia has been hindered so Serbia and Croatia could profit more, mainly through some local Bosnian politicians working in favor of Croatia and Serbia of course. That couldve been noted through sabotaging BHANSA for years in terms of taking over control of our sky, functioning of Mostar Airport etc... Luckily that started changing as well, and I hope this upwards trend in Bosnia will continue :)

@anon 12:39 You've forgotten to mention one more reason. The management of the Sarajevo airport is really bad and their fares are too expensive (part of it goes to the budget of FBiH I think).

I totally agree that Bosnia should have more passengers and this result, although another record is pure shame for a country with such potential (both touristic and diaspora).

Yes, Bosnia is close to Germany and western Europe than Macedonia, but Bosnia has no highways and it has local roads that often take hours to get to Serbia or some other nearby country. That itself should drive people to fly more, but ...

People need to use local roads in Bosna even if they come by plane. They don't live in airports.

But for 1 million people living in and around Sarajevo, it is much easier to drive from the airport to their home located less than 50km from the airport, rather than drive through the whole BiH.

Still modest. Sarajevo Airport is very expensive with very limited connections to European cities. On the other hand, Sarajevo is not such a small city and surrounding municipalities and regions are home to more than 1.000.000 people (Sarajevo Canton, central Bosnia, East sarajevo region) who would fly much more often if there were decent prices and connections.
Yes, many Bosnians prefer to drive to let's say Austria, Germany and Slovenia, but it is still shocking to see so many people take buses from Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland and other countries to Bosnia. The reason is simple, they cannot fly for cheap or they cannot fly to Bosnia at all because there are no flights.

It's still only 10th busiest airport in former Yugoslavia while, if some other circumstances, it could have been number 4 or 5. The airport does little to take Sarajevo, and Bosnia overall, out of isolation.

There are. In ex opcina Rijeka (Rijeka, Bakar, Kostrena, Viskovo, Kastav) there are about 200.000 inhabitants and airport served last year about 200.000 passengers. Not saying is good, just sometimes numbers can coincide :)

Around 500,000 tourists from Italy, Spain and Latin America visit Medjugorje every year. It is just unbelievable how Mostar airport don't benefit from that.
